  • Alginate impressions for fixed prosthodontics : A 20 year follow up study
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Swedish Dental Journal. - 0347-9994. ; 28:2, s. 53-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to estimate whether the survival ratios after 20 years of fixed prosthodontics made of alginate impressions was higher, equivalent or lower, compared to the survival ratios, shown in studies, where different impression materia Is were used. 151 females and 104 males were screened regarding the condition and age of the restorations at the an nu a I check-up in one of the authors surgeries. Average ages were 55 and 54 years respectively, when the fixed prosthodontics were seated. A total of 1.271 units were produced during the twenty years, 911 abutment teeth and 360 pontics. The type of prosthetic work was divided into three groups: 1) larger fixed prosthodontics 6-14 units (469), 2) smaller fixed prosthodontics 2-5 units (541) and 3) single crowns (261). The results show that alginate impressions can produce fixed prosthodontics with survival ratios similar to those presented in other studies, after 5 years (99%) 10 years (93-96%) and 15 years (74-96%). After 20 years the survival ratio was 61-63%. In conclusion, fixed prosthodontics made according to the syringe-tray alginate impression method may have the same success rates after 20 years compared to that of fixed prosthodontics presented in previous longitudinal clinical studies where other impression materials had been used. In this study, caries and root fractures were the main reasons for removing abutment teeth and pontics.

  • Polybrominated diphenyl ethers and Tetrabromobisphenol A : Chemical synthesis, X-ray crystallography and Photochemical degradation
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the 1960s’ several manmade chemicals were detected in the environment, far from their sources. The most well known, and most likely those with the largest impact on the society, were DDT and its related compounds, and PCBs. These anthropogenic compounds were characterised as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Following these POPs, several other chemicals have found their way to the environment. Over the last two decades, brominated flame retardants (BFRs) have become a matter of concern. Among all BFRs being commercially produced, tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are the ones with the largest annual production. TBBPA is a very well defined compound while PBDEs consist of a large number of isomers and homologues (congeners). TBBPA does not seem to accumulate in biota as the PBDEs do, but is still of concern since it is found in e.g. sediments. The PBDEs can reach accumulation levels up in the ppm range. Still there is a lack of basic data for both TBBPA and PBDEs. Hence the present thesis is aimed to fill some of the data gaps by pursuing work on 1) photochemical degradation of TBBPA, some related compounds, and PBDEs; 2) synthesis of PBDE congeners and of TBBPA degradation products and 3) structural identifications of a selected set of BFRs by X-ray crystallography. An apparatus was designed for carrying out photochemical degradation test of chemicals in general but in particular for BFRs. Quantum yield, rate of degradation and to some extent, identification of degradation products were performed on TBBPA, the corresponding chlorinated compound and a number of TBBPA degradation products and on 15 single PBDE congeners. In order to make this work possible all three nonaBDE isomers were synthesised via a reductive pathway applying sodium borohydride as a reducing agent. The three nona-BDEs were all characterised by X-ray crystallography. The results of the photochemical degradation of TBBPA in water show a rapidly degradable compound also at pH’s that are environmentally relevant. Hence it is likely that TBBPA is not transported long distances, when exposed to sunlight, without undergoing photochemical degradation. It is notable that the TBBPA is degraded through cleavage between the two phenol rings. When the method was applied to study quantum yields and rate constants for the reaction of PBDE congeners it is evident that the decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) is rapidly transformed. The reaction rate differ drastically from PBDEs with four or five bromine substituents that have very long half-lives when subjected to UV-light under the same conditions as for BDE-209. Lower brominated diphenyl ethers and polybrominated dibenzofurans were identified as PBDE degradation products. The synthesis of PBDEs and of TBBPA degradation products expanded the study as did the X-ray structure identifications.

  • Erythromelalgia: Incidence and clinical experience in a single centre in Sweden.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Vasa: European Journal of Vascular Medicine. - : Hogrefe Publishing Group. - 0301-1526. ; 41:1, s. 43-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Erythromelalgia (EM) incidence has not been well studied and there are only two studies published on this subject as far as we know. The aims are to study the incidence of this rare condition in the south of Sweden, to report the clinical experience from a single centre including characterisation of comorbidity and to report on prognosis. Patients and methods: Retrospective study of a population-based analysis of data from the southernmost part of Sweden corresponding to the median age of the patients (Statistics Sweden). The diagnosis of EM is based on the medical record reflecting the triad of redness, burning pain and increased temperature of the feet or hands or both. We evaluated the presence or absence of EM triad by recording the history, physical examination, laboratory analysis, cold provocation test and laser Doppler imaging, and by searching for any confounding disease in cases of suspected EM. Results: During a 10.5 year period we clinically identified 27 patients with EM. Median age was 49 [IQR (34 - 68)] years, 19 (70 %) were women. The mean delay from the onset of the symptoms to the time of diagnosis was 4.5 (SD ± 3.9) years. Gender and age adjusted incidence of EM for our region was calculated to be 0.36 per 100 000 persons per year. Three patients developed intraabdominal cancer during the follow up, but there was no mortality directed related to EM. Conclusions: The overall population-based incidence of erythromelalgia was 0.36 per 100 000 which is identical with a previous report in a Scandinavian population.

  • The design of a 3 GHz thermionic RF-gun and energy filter for MAX-lab
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - 0167-5087. ; 491:1-2, s. 307-313
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new pre-injector has been designed for the MAX-laboratory. It consists of an RF-gun and a magnetic energy filter. The newly designed RF-gun geometry will be operated at 3 GHz in the thermionic mode using a BaO cathode. The pre-injector will provide a 2.3 MeV electron beam in 3 ps micro pulses to a new injector system currently under construction. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
