  • Synthesis and structural characterization of perovskite type proton conducting BaZr1-xInxO3-delta (0.0 <= x <= 0.75)
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Solid State Ionics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-2738 .- 1872-7689. ; 177:17-18, s. 1395-1403
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Solid state sintering has been used to prepare the cubic perovskite structured compounds BaZr1-xInxO3-delta (0.0 <= x <= 0.75). Analysis of X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) data reveals that the unit cell parameter, a, increases linearly with an increased Indium concentration. XRPD data was also used to demonstrate the completion of sample hydration, which was reached when the materials showed a set of single-phase Bragg-peaks. Dynamic thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) data showed that approx. 89% of the total number of available oxygen vacancies can be filled in BaZr1-xInxO3-delta for x=0.50, and that the maximum water uptake occurs below 300 degrees C. Rietveld analysis of the room temperature neutron powder diffraction (NPD) data confirmed the average cubic symmetry (space group Pm-3m), and an expansion of the unit cell parameter after the hydration reaction. The strong O-H stretch band, 2500-3500 cm(-1), in the infrared absorbance spectrum clearly manifests the presence of protons in the hydrated material. Proton conductivity of hydrated BaZr1-xInxO3-delta, x=0.75 was investigated during heating and cooling cycles under dry argon atmosphere. The total conductivity during the heating cycle was nearly two orders of magnitude greater than that of cooling cycle at 300 degrees C, whilst these values were similar at higher temperatures i.e. T > 600 degrees C.

  • Risk factors for subarachnoid haemorrhage : a nationwide cohort of 950 000 adults
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Epidemiology. - : Oxford University Press. - 0300-5771 .- 1464-3685. ; 48:6, s. 2018-2025
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is a devastating disease, with high mortality rate and substantial disability among survivors. Its causes are poorly understood. We aimed to investigate risk factors for SAH using a novel nationwide cohort consortium.METHODS: We obtained individual participant data of 949 683 persons (330 334 women) between 25 and 90 years old, with no history of SAH at baseline, from 21 population-based cohorts. Outcomes were obtained from the Swedish Patient and Causes of Death Registries.RESULTS: During 13 704 959 person-years of follow-up, 2659 cases of first-ever fatal or non-fatal SAH occurred, with an age-standardized incidence rate of 9.0 [95% confidence interval (CI) (7.4-10.6)/100 000 person-years] in men and 13.8 [(11.4-16.2)/100 000 person-years] in women. The incidence rate increased exponentially with higher age. In multivariable-adjusted Poisson models, marked sex interactions for current smoking and body mass index (BMI) were observed. Current smoking conferred a rate ratio (RR) of 2.24 (95% CI 1.95-2.57) in women and 1.62 (1.47-1.79) in men. One standard deviation higher BMI was associated with an RR of 0.86 (0.81-0.92) in women and 1.02 (0.96-1.08) in men. Higher blood pressure and lower education level were also associated with higher risk of SAH.CONCLUSIONS: The risk of SAH is 45% higher in women than in men, with substantial sex differences in risk factor strengths. In particular, a markedly stronger adverse effect of smoking in women may motivate targeted public health initiatives.

  • Implantation of hydrophilic and hydrophobic titanium discs in rat tibia: cellular reactions on the surfaces during the first 3 weeks in bone.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Biomaterials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0142-9612. ; 25:19, s. 4759-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a previous study, a method for evaluation of short-time (1-8 days) healing of titanium implants in rat tibiae was described (J. Biomed. Mater. Res. 66A(3) (2003) 662). The implants were disc-shaped and cells and tissue on the surface were investigated, not the adjacent tissue. In this study healing during the first 3 weeks in bone was examined and the healing response between hydrophilic and hydrophobic titanium was compared. Immunofluorescence techniques were used to detect signs of bone formation on the surfaces. Cell viability, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, presence of osteocalcin and cells positive for bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were investigated. Both viable and non-viable cells were found on both surfaces during the first week. Only initially was there a difference between them; 4% viable cells on hydrophilic discs compared to 56% on hydrophobic ones. More BMP-2 positive cells were found on hydrophilic discs than on hydrophobic ones after 1 week. VEGF was detected after 8 days on both surfaces. Osteocalcin positive cells were found from 2 weeks. ALP positive cells were found after 8 days, while at 2-3 weeks ALP positive tissue was abundant on both surfaces. In conclusion, signs of bone formation were detected during the period investigated. Surface energy appeared to be of more importance initially, with higher surface energy resulting in more rapid cell activation and differentiation than lower.

  • Studies by imaging TOF-SIMS of bone mineralization on porous titanium implants after 1 week in bone
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-4332 .- 1873-5584. ; 252:19, s. 6757-6760
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Anodic oxidation was used to grow porous layers on titanium discs. Six different oxidation procedures were used producing six different surfaces. The implants were inserted in rat bone (tibia) for 7 days. After implant retrieval, mineralization (hydroxyapatite formation) on the implant surfaces was investigated using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). Bone tissue around the implants was sectioned and stained. The amount of bone in close apposition to the implant was calculated. The porosity showed great variation between the surfaces. Hydroxyapatite was detected on all surfaces. A slight positive correlation between porosity and mineralization was found, although the most porous surface was not the best mineralized one. Bone had formed around all implants after 7 days. The bone-to-metal contact for the porous implants did not differ significantly from the non-porous control. Porosity is known to influence cellular events. The results indicate that porosity could have an initial, positive influence on bone integration of implants, by stimulating the mineralization process. The methods used were found to be suitable tools for investigation of initial healing around implants in bone.

  • Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometric analysis of the interface between bone and titanium implants.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Rapid communications in mass spectrometry : RCM. - : Wiley. - 0951-4198 .- 1097-0231. ; 22:7, s. 943-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Implant healing into bone tissue is a process where the mature bone grows towards and eventually fuses with the implant. In this study we investigated implant healing during 4 weeks with focus on the implant-tissue interface. Our main interest was to study the mineralization process around the implant. Titanium discs were implanted in rat tibia for 2 and 4 weeks. After implantation cross sections of bone and implant were made using a low-speed saw equipped with a diamond wafering blade. One section from each sample was stained with basic fuchsin and micrographed by light microscopy (LM). The other section was analyzed with imaging time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) using a Bi(3)(+) cluster ion source. This ion source has recently been shown to enable identification of high-mass hydroxyapatite (HA) fragment ions (m/z 291-653) in bone samples. The LM images were used to identify areas suitable for TOF-SIMS analysis. Three areas were selected for mass spectral analysis, corresponding to interface region, bone and soft tissue, from which positive ion spectra were recorded. In the areas identified as bone, high-mass HA fragments ions were found after both 2 and 4 weeks. In the soft tissue area, no high-mass ions were found after 4 weeks. However, after 2 weeks HA-related ions were identified in mineralized spots in areas defined as soft tissue. After 4 but not after 2 weeks, high-mass HA fragment ions were found in the interface region. In conclusion, differences were observed regarding mineralization between 2 and 4 weeks of implantation and between different regions surrounding the implants. Imaging TOF-SIMS analysis using a Bi(3)(+) cluster as ion source enables identification of high-mass HA fragment ions at implant-tissue interfaces in bone. This technique might therefore be useful for biocompatibility assessment and for studying the mineralization process at implant surfaces.

  • Studies on the catalytic mechanism of butyrylcholinesterase and the development of a cholinesterase assay for clinical applications
  • 1980
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This investigation is concerned with the kinetic behaviour of butyrylcholinesterase and the development of a simple, fast and reliable method for the determination of cholinesterases in whole blood.Steady state kinetic studies with selective inhibitors and with a number of substrates at several different conditions were used in an attempt to explain the observed substrate activation of horse serum butyrylcholinesterase. Another approach used was ligand binding studies.A plausible catalytic mechanism involves binding of a substrate molecule to the acylated active site of the enzyme. This binding should increase the rate of hydrolysis of the acylated enzyme. The spectrophotometric assay developed for cholinesterases discriminates between the two cholinesterases in blood. It also yields reliable estimates of cholinesterase activities from whole blood of individuals exposed to anti-cholinesterases.

  • Development and Psychometric Test of the Salutogenic Survey on Sustainable Working Life for Nurses : Identifying Resistance Resources against Stress
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - 1661-7827 .- 1660-4601. ; 21:2, s. 1-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extensive research shows nurses’ work environment to be particularly stressful. This study develops, explores, and psychometrically tests a new profession-specific questionnaire identifying generalised and specific resistance resources, that make it possible to measure resources to manage work-related stress. An exploratory study design was employed. The questionnaire development was inspired by the MEASURE approach and the salutogenic theory of health. Building on the results from a literature review of nursing research and salutogenesis, supplemented by twelve interviews with hospital nurses, an item pool was generated. The first version was pilot-tested in a group of nurses who were studying to become specialist nurses. The second version of the questionnaire was psychometrically tested on a sample of registered nurses in close patient care (n = 475), analysed using confirmatory factor analysis to test seven predefined domains of the questionnaire. The analysis revealed a first order seven-domain model of 21 items: job satisfaction, professional role, work motivation, commitment, belonging in the workplace, factors and conditions for remaining in the profession, and workload. The structure of the questionnaire indicates its usefulness in clinical practice for measuring resistance resources.

  • The level of sense of coherence among Swedish nursing staff
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Advanced Nursing. - : Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Inc.. - 0309-2402 .- 1365-2648. ; 75:11, s. 2766-2772
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim To explore the level of sense of coherence among Swedish nursing staff.Design: An explorative quantitative study design was adopted using a short form for measuring sense of coherence. Methods Data were collected in January 2018 from nurses working in full‐time positions at two hospitals in Western Sweden. A total of 93 nurses completed the 13 item questionnaire measuring sense of coherence. Descriptive statistics were applied to obtain means and standard deviations. Spearman's rank correlation was used to describe strength of association between sense of coherence and socio‐demographic categories. Between‐group differences were defined using the nonparametric tests of Mann Whitney U test and Kruskal‐Wallis test. Results The internal consistency of the SOC‐13 was low. An inter‐item‐correlation test indicated that two items decreased the internal consistency of the scale. The level of the three dimensions of sense of coherence varied; manageability was weakest and decreased the total sense of coherence. The meaningfulness dimension was as strongest. Conclusion On a national level, nurses reported weaker SOC than the general population, but stronger in an international comparison of nurses. They found their work difficult to manage, but meaningful.Impact On a national level, the nurses report weaker SOC than the general population, but stronger in an international comparison of nurses. Findings from this study will have an impact on how nurses can manage work related stress in terms of sense of coherence. There will also be an impact on nurses' well‐being, which in a long run benefits patients.
