  • Looking as if you know : Systematic object inspection precedes object recognition
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Vision. - : Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). - 1534-7362. ; :4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sometimes we seem to look at the very object we are searching for, without consciously seeing it. How do we select object relevant information before we become aware of the object? We addressed this question in two recognition experiments involving pictures of fragmented objects. In Experiment 1, participants preferred to look at the target object rather than a control region 25 fixations prior to explicit recognition. Furthermore, participants inspected the target as if they had identified it around 9 fixations prior to explicit recognition. In Experiment 2, we investigated the influence of semantic knowledge in guiding object inspection prior to explicit recognition. Consistently, more specific knowledge about target identity made participants scan the fragmented stimulus more efficiently. For instance, non-target regions were rejected faster when participants knew the target object's name. Both experiments showed that participants were looking at the objects as if they knew them before they became aware of their identity.

  • Fuel ion ratio determination using the 14 MeV Tandem neutron spectrometer for JET DTE1 campaign discharges
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Fusion engineering and design. - : Elsevier. - 0920-3796 .- 1873-7196. ; 184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the determination of the fuel ion ratio nT/ntot in fusion experiments using two different approaches. The methods are applied to plasma discharges from the deuterium-tritium campaign at the Joint European Torus (JET) in 1997. Multiple discharges have been analysed using data acquired with the Tandem (KM2) neutron spectrometer, using a new neutron spectrometer response function and improved line-of-sight information. The two different approaches were generally similar with the exception of the beam slowing down modelling, handled by two different particle transport codes, namely, TRANSP and PENCIL.The results show that nT/ntot can be determined using Tandem neutron spectrometer data; nT/ntot using both of the approaches are consistent and within the uncertainty for a range of studied discharges. The obtained results support previous studies on nT/ntot determination using neutron spectroscopy. In addition, we have shown that PENCIL can be used instead of TRANSP for a range of discharges which could simplify and speed up the estimation of nT/ntot. The possible limitations of the approach using PENCIL could be investigated using different neutron spectrometer data from the 2021 JET deuterium-tritium campaign.A similar spectrometer like Tandem is planned to be operational at ITER and the results of this paper form the first experimental verification of the capability for nT/ntot measurements with such spectrometers. Further research on this could lead to better understanding of these instruments and their limitations before the start of experiments at ITER.

  • The ratio FEV1/FVC and its association to respiratory symptoms-A Swedish general population study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Clinical Physiology and Functional Imaging. - : Wiley. - 1475-0961 .- 1475-097X. ; 41:2, s. 181-191
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chronic airflow limitation (CAL) can be defined as fixed ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) any respiratory symptom. In a cross-sectional general population study, 15,128 adults (50-64 years of age), 7,120 never-smokers and 8,008 ever-smokers completed a respiratory questionnaire and performed FEV1 and FVC after bronchodilation. We calculated different ratios of FEV1/FVC from 0.40 to 1.0 using 0.70 as reference category. We analysed odds ratios (OR) between different ratios and any respiratory symptom using adjusted multivariable logistic regression. Among all subjects, regardless of smoking habits, the lowest odds for any respiratory symptom was at FEV1/FVC = 0.82, OR 0.48 (95% CI 0.41-0.56). Among never-smokers, the lowest odds for any respiratory symptom was at FEV1/FVC = 0.81, OR 0.53 (95% CI 0.41-0.70). Among ever-smokers, the odds for any respiratory symptom was lowest at FEV1/FVC = 0.81, OR 0.43 (95% CI 0.16-1.19), although the rate of inclining in odds was small in the upper part, that is FEV1/FVC = 0.85 showed similar odds, OR 0.45 (95% CI 0.38-0.55). We concluded that the odds for any respiratory symptoms continuously decreased with higher FEV1/FVC ratios and reached a minimum around 0.80-0.85, with similar results among never-smokers. These results indicate that the optimal threshold associated with respiratory symptoms may be higher than 0.70 and this should be further investigated in prospective longitudinal studies.

  • Neurocognitive processes underlying heuristic and normative probability judgments
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Cognition. - : ELSEVIER. - 0010-0277 .- 1873-7838. ; 196, s. 1-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Judging two events in combination (A&B) as more probable than one of the events (A) is known as a conjunction fallacy. According to dual-process explanations of human judgment and decision making, the fallacy is due to the application of a heuristic, associative cognitive process. Avoiding the fallacy has been suggested to require the recruitment of a separate process that can apply normative rules. We investigated these assumptions using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during conjunction tasks. Judgments, whether correct or not, engaged a network of brain regions identical to that engaged during similarity judgments. Avoidance of the conjunction fallacy additionally, and uniquely, involved a fronto-parietal network previously linked to supervisory, analytic control processes. The results lend credibility to the idea that incorrect probability judgments are the result of a representativeness heuristic that requires additional neurocognitive resources to avoid.

  • Performance Evaluation of IEC 61850-90-5 over a latency optimized 3GPP LTE Network
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 IEEE International Conference on Communications, Control, and Computing Technologies for Smart Grids, SmartGridComm 2018. - : IEEE. - 9781538679548
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper evaluates the performance of the IEC 61850-90-5 protocol stack transmitted over a latency optimized non-commercial 3GPP LTE network through experiments in a lab environment. IEC 61850-90-5 is designed for Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) communication but can also be extended to other areas of control and protection in smart grids, using the routable GOOSE and routable sample value features. The test was carried out using a PC that emulated a PMU in sending periodic IEC61850-90-5 packets. Different IEC 61850-90-5 packet sizes and transmission rates were considered to determine the availability, throughput and latency of the LTE based network. The latency was minimized by applying a low latency scheduling mechanism and local breakout where user plane functionality of the core network is located at the edge of the Radio Access network. From the results it can be seen that an LTE network with latency optimized configuration performs well in terms of throughput and latency whereas a reference network without local breakout show significantly higher latency and jitter.
