  • The quality assurance process for the ARTSCAN head and neck study - a practical interactive approach for QA in 3DCRT and IMRT.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Radiotherapy and oncology : journal of the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-8140 .- 1879-0887. ; 87:2, s. 290-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: This paper describes the quality assurance (QA) work performed in the Swedish multicenter ARTSCAN (Accelerated RadioTherapy of Squamous cell CArcinomas in the head and Neck) trial to guarantee high quality in a multicenter study which involved modern radiotherapy such as 3DCRT or IMRT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was closed in June 2006 with 750 randomised patients. Radiation therapy-related data for every patient were sent by each participating centre to the QA office where all trial data were reviewed, analysed and stored. In case of any deviation from the protocol, an interactive process was started between the QA office and the local responsible clinician and/or physicist to increase the compliance to the protocol for future randomised patients. Meetings and workshops were held on a regular basis for discussions on various trial-related issues and for the QA office to report on updated results. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: This review covers the 734 patients out of a total of 750 who had entered the study. Deviations early in the study were corrected so that the overall compliance to the protocol was very high. There were only negligible variations in doses and dose distributions to target volumes for each specific site and stage. The quality of the treatments was high. Furthermore, an extensive database of treatment parameters was accumulated for future dose-volume vs. endpoint evaluations. CONCLUSIONS: This comprehensive QA programme increased the probability to draw firm conclusions from our study and may serve as a concept for QA work in future radiotherapy trials where comparatively small effects are searched for in a heterogeneous tumour population.

  • Appearance of the novel activating F1174S ALK mutation in neuroblastoma correlates with aggressive tumor progression and unresponsiveness to therapy.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Cancer research. - : American Association for Cancer Research. - 1538-7445 .- 0008-5472. ; 71:1, s. 98-105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mutations in the kinase domain of the ALK kinase have emerged recently as important players in the genetics of the childhood tumor neuroblastoma. Here, we report the appearance of a novel ALK mutation in neuroblastoma, correlating with aggressive tumor behavior. Analyses of genomic DNA from biopsy samples initially showed ALK sequence to be wild type. However, during disease progression, mutation of amino acid F1174 to a serine within the ALK kinase domain was observed, which correlated with aggressive neuroblastoma progression in the patient. We show that mutation of F1174 to serine generates a potent gain-of-function mutant, as observed in 2 independent systems. First, PC12 cell lines expressing ALK(F1174S) display ligand-independent activation of ALK and further downstream signaling activation. Second, analysis of ALK(F1174S) in Drosophila models confirms that the mutation mediates a strong, rough eye phenotype upon expression in the developing eye. Thus, we report a novel ALK(F1174S) mutation that displays ligand-independent activity in vivo, correlating with rapid and treatment-resistant tumor growth. The study also shows that initial screening in the first tumor biopsy of a patient may not be sufficient and that further molecular analysis, in particular in tumor progression and/or tumor relapse, is warranted for better understanding of the treatment of neuroblastoma patients.

  • Influence of the platinum-support interaction on the direct reduction of NOx under lean conditions
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Studies in Surface Science and Catalysis. - 0167-2991. ; 116, s. 285-294
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Catalysts containing Pt supported on SiC, Al2O3 and ZSM-5 were prepared and studied for NOx reduction by C3H6 in Oz excess under transient (temperature ramps) and steady-state conditions. The maximum NOx reduction activity in the heating ramp experiments was similar for Pt/SiC and Pt/ZSM-5, while Pt/Al2O3 showed higher maximum activity. Both N-2 and N2O formation was observed for all catalysts, although the respective amounts varied with the investigated system. Highest Nz selectivity was observed for Pt/Al2O3. When the NOx reduction activity was studied under steady-state conditions the activity of Pt/Al2O3 decreased substantially (mainly due to a loss in N-2 production). Pt/ZSM-5 became somewhat more selective towards Na production whereas the activity and selectivity of Pt/SiC remained at about the same values as far the heating ramp experiments. Adsorbed species on the surface of the different catalysts were investigated using in-situ FTIR in order to obtain information about the reaction mechanisms. The adsorption of species on Pt/SiC was negligible, while a number of absorption bands were observed for Pt/Al2O3 (N and C containing species, and -NCO) and Pt/ZSM-5 (HC).

  • Combining Actor Network Theory and Genre Theory to Understand the Evolution of Digital genres
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the JAIS Theory Development Workshop. Sprouts Working Papers on Information Systems. - Amsterdam : Sprouts Alliance. ; 8:20, s. 36-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we argue that a combination of Actor-Network Theory (ANT) and Genre Theory can constitute a theoretical framework for understanding how digital genres evolve. Genre theory states that genres evolve over time through reciprocal interaction between institutionalized practices and individual action; that they develop from actors’ responses to recurrent situations, and are shaped around characteristics as content, form, functionality and purpose. Genres emerge out of practice and at the same time they shape that practice. While genre theory can describe the characteristics of a genre, it cannot handle the process of how a genre is formed and what powers and forces are involved in this shaping process. In order to address this problem, several authors have incorporated structuration theory into genre analysis. However, structuration theory can only catch these constitutional processes of genre in a very broad manner. As a genre is evolving and stabilizing over time in interplay with different actors, it goes beyond what is possible to explain only by means of structuration theory. Instead, ANT could work as a tool to capture the process of how a genre takes form in negotiations with different stakeholders. In this paper we discuss how genre theory and ANT can be combined in a framework for analyzing emerging genres. We apply this theoretical framework on an e-newspaper project that embodies a new genre in the making. We will here show how evolving genre characteristics are developed, formed and stabilized in a negotiation and struggle between the involved actors when they translate their interests in ways that finally are resulting in a new genre.

  • Increase in pollen sensitization in Swedish adults and protective effect of keeping animals in childhood
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Clinical and Experimental Allergy. - : Wiley. - 0954-7894 .- 1365-2222. ; 46:10, s. 1328-1336
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: To date, most studies of the "allergy epidemic" have been based on self-reported data. There is still limited knowledge on time trends in allergic sensitization, especially among adults.OBJECTIVE: To study allergic sensitization, its risk factors, and time trends in prevalence.METHODS: Within West Sweden Asthma Study (WSAS) a population-based sample of 788 adults (17-60y) underwent skin prick tests (SPT) for 11 aeroallergens 2009-2012. Specific IgE was analyzed in 750 of the participants. Those aged 20-46y (n=379) were compared with the European Community Respiratory Health Survey sample aged 20-46y from the same area (n=591) in 1991-1992.RESULTS: Among those aged 20-46y the prevalence of positive SPT to pollen increased; timothy from 17.1% to 29.0% (p<0.001) and birch from 15.6% to 23.7% (p=0.002) between 1991-1992 and 2009-2012. Measurements of specific IgE confirmed these increases. Prevalence of sensitization to all other tested allergens was unchanged. In the full WSAS sample aged 17-60y any positive SPT was seen in 41.9%, and the dominating sensitizers were pollen (34.3%), animals (22.8%) and mites (12.6%). Pollen sensitization was strongly associated with rhinitis, whereas indoor allergens were more associated with asthma. Growing up with livestock or furred pets decreased the risk of sensitization, adjusted odds ratio 0.53 (0.28-0.995) and 0.68 (0.47-0.98) respectively.CONCLUSION: Pollen sensitization has increased in Swedish adults since the early 1990's, while the prevalence of sensitization to other allergens has remained unchanged. This is one plausible explanation for the increase in rhinitis 1990-2008 in Swedish adults, during which time the prevalence of asthma, which is more associated with perennial allergens, was stable. Contact with animals in childhood seems to reduce the risk of sensitization well into adulthood. One major factor contributing to the rise in pollen allergy is a significant increase in levels of birch and grass pollen over the past three decades.

  • Writing : teaching and researching
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The NAWE Conference, Durham, 13-15 November 2015. - : National Association of Writers in Education.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • How do we teach creative writing? How do we examine literary creation? Howcan we theorize the relationship between creative writing and the literarycanon? How can we make the distinction between works of art, which throughtheir aesthetic expression and content also include research, from works ofart where the creation process needs to be documented? In the long run, isthere a risk that conventionality might isolate the academy from the openartistic community? How do we assess the national perspective in relation tothe international perspective in our writing, teaching and researching?

  • Writing "the Forbidden"
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Presented at The NAWE Conference with Paper Nations. - York : National Association of Writers in Education. ; , s. 21-21
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this session, Cecilia Davidsson and Magnus Eriksson from Linnaeus University in Sweden will present and critically analyze a challenging exercise for their Creative Writing students: Writing about a taboo. There ara external taboos, created by society's norms, but also internal taboos related to personal experience. In this exercise, we want the students to ask themselves: What is the worst thing I can write about? What is my taboo? Do I dare to write about it? Do I dare letting other people read the piece? The aim of the task is to get our students to test their own limits.
