Unraveling Divergent Gene Expression Profiles in Bicuspid and Tricuspid Aortic Valve Patients with Thoracic Aortic Dilatation: The ASAP Study

- Thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) is a common complication in patients with a bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), the most frequent congenital heart disorder. For unknown reasons TAA occurs at a younger age, with a higher frequency in BAV patients than in patients with a tricuspid aortic valve (TAV), resulting in an increased risk for aortic dissection and rupture. To investigate the increased TAA incidence in BAV patients, we obtained tissue biopsy samples from nondilated and dilated aortas of 131 BAV and TAV patients. Global gene expression profiles were analyzed from controls and from aortic intima-media and adventitia of patients (in total 345 samples). Of the genes found to be differentially expressed with dilation, only a few (less than4%) were differentially expressed in both BAV and TAV patients. With the use of gene set enrichment analysis, the cell adhesion and extracellular region gene ontology sets were identified as common features of TAA in both BAV and TAV patients. Immune response genes were observed to be particularly overexpressed in the aortic media of dilated TAV samples. The divergent gene expression profiles indicate that there are fundamental differences in TAA etiology in BAV and TAV patients. Immune response activation solely in the aortic media of TAV patients suggests that inflammation is involved in TAA formation in TAV but not in BAV patients. Conversely, genes were identified that were only differentially expressed with dilation in BAV patients. The result has bearing on future clinical studies in which separate analysis of BAV and TAV patients is recommended.

Technical Design Report for the Phase-II Upgrade of the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter

- This Technical Design Report describes the project to upgrade the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter for the operation at the High Luminosity LHC. The High Luminosity LHC is planned to begin operation in 2026 and to deliver more than ten times the integrated luminosity (up to 4000 fb"^{-1}" of the LHC Runs 1-3 combined. To achieve this integrated luminosity in a reasonable amount of time, an instantaneous luminosity of up to "7.5\times 10^{34} cm^{-2}s^{-1}" is required, corresponding to up to 200 simultaneous pp interactions per bunch crossing. The large luminosity offers the opportunity for a wealth of physics measurements but presents significant challenges to the detector as well as to the trigger and data acquisition systems in the form of increased trigger rates and detector occupancy. This document summarises the requirements and motivations for the Tile Calorimeter upgrade and gives a detailed technical description of the different components. It describes the beam tests with the prototypes in recent years and the plans for the assembly, quality assurance and the integration of the final system. The document also presents the key aspects of project management with an overview of the organisation, the schedule and the cost.

Minimum Sample Length for the Estimation of Long-term Speaking Rate

- In this study, we expand on previous experiments designed with the aim of determining the minimum length that an audio sample should have in order for the speaking rate derived from it to be representative of the sample as a whole. We compare two different approaches to establishing that the time series of the cumulative speaking rate calculated over the audio sample has reached stability. We also compare the effect on stabilization time of four other factors that may affect the way speaking rate is calculated. The results show that all factors tested have significant effects, although of limited practical concern. Overall, average stability time is 12.1 seconds, with the bulk of the distribution lying between 7.9 and 16.2 s.

Student conceptions of motivation to study revealed through phenomenography: Differences and similarities among primary school students

- This study examined a group of primary Swedish students' conceptions of their own motivation for learning. Altogether, 68 students in Grades 3, 6, and 8 participated in the study, in which similarities and differences among students in the three grades were considered. Theoretical and methodological aspects were guided by the phenomenographical approach. For most students, positive and negative influences on motivation emerged in seven distinct categories: feelings, teachers, teaching, subjects, learning environment, classmates, and well-being. The apparent importance of good teachers, structured and varied lessons, practical aesthetic subjects and more group-rooms was similar across the three different grades. Differences that emerged were students' reduced joy in learning, decreased interest in mathematics, higher levels of stress and pressure, more worry and anxiety, higher degree of preparation for the future, and a greater need for individualisation for the older students. The study's results confirm previous research but also provide new knowledge about variations across the grades and more specific factors that promote or inhibit students' motivation to study.
