  • Ten golden rules for optimal antibiotic use in hospital settings: the WARNING call to action

    • Antibiotics are recognized widely for their benefits when used appropriately. However, they are often used inappropriately despite the importance of responsible use within good clinical practice. Effective antibiotic treatment is an essential component of universal healthcare, and it is a global responsibility to ensure appropriate use. Currently, pharmaceutical companies have little incentive to develop new antibiotics due to scientific, regulatory, and financial barriers, further emphasizing the importance of appropriate antibiotic use. To address this issue, the Global Alliance for Infections in Surgery established an international multidisciplinary task force of 295 experts from 115 countries with different backgrounds. The task force developed a position statement called WARNING (Worldwide Antimicrobial Resistance National/International Network Group) aimed at raising awareness of antimicrobial resistance and improving antibiotic prescribing practices worldwide. The statement outlined is 10 axioms, or "golden rules," for the appropriate use of antibiotics that all healthcare workers should consistently adhere in clinical practice.

    • Tinnitus is the phantom percept of an internal non-verbal set of noises and tones. It is reported by 15% of the population and it is usually associated with hearing and/or brain disorders. The role of structural variants (SVs) in coding and non-coding regions has not been investigated in patients with severe tinnitus. In this study, we performed whole-genome sequencing in 97 unrelated Swedish individuals with chronic tinnitus (TIGER cohort). Rare single nucleotide variants (SNV), large structural variants (LSV), and copy number variations (CNV) were retrieved to perform a gene enrichment analysis in TIGER and in a subgroup of patients with severe tinnitus (SEVTIN, n = 34), according to the tinnitus handicap inventory (THI) scores. An independent exome sequencing dataset of 147 Swedish tinnitus patients was used as a replication cohort (JAGUAR cohort) and population-specific datasets from Sweden (SweGen) and Non-Finish Europeans (NFE) from gnomAD were used as control groups. SEVTIN patients showed a higher prevalence of hyperacusis, hearing loss, and anxiety when they were compared to individuals in the TIGER cohort. We found an enrichment of rare missense variants in 6 and 8 high-constraint genes in SEVTIN and TIGER cohorts, respectively. Of note, an enrichment of missense variants was found in the CACNA1E gene in both SEVTIN and TIGER. We replicated the burden of missense variants in 9 high-constrained genes in the JAGUAR cohort, including the gene NAV2, when data were compared with NFE. Moreover, LSVs in constrained regions overlapping CACNA1E, NAV2, and TMEM132D genes were observed in TIGER and SEVTIN.

  • Synthesis of homogeneously dispersed cobalt nanoparticles in the pores of functionalized SBA-15 silica

    • Cobalt nanoparticles were prepared at room temperature by reducing cobalt sulfate heptahydrate with sodium borohydride and using functionalized SBA-15 mesoporous silica as a hard template. It was found that both external and internal fuctionalization of silica walls play a crucial role on the infiltration and reaction of the reagents in the silica framework. Subsequent heat treatment of the impregnated silica at 500 °C in air or nitrogen atmospheres leads to growth of crystals of the deposited cobalt and formation of cobalt and cobalt oxide nanoparticles, respectively. Dissolution of the silica template by NaOH resulted in well dispersed Co and Co3O4 nanoparticles ranging in size from 2 to 4 nm. The functionalization of the silica was studied by FTIR, N2-physisorption, and thermogravimetric techniques and the obtained nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, TEM and EDX analysis.

    • The advantage of using thin plies is a well-known feature in laminated composite plates, since the homogenized properties usually improve, and in turn, the performance of the structure. In the literature, several works deal with the study of the ply thickness effect for different structures and loading conditions. However, fewer studies have been performed to understand the structure response under out-of-plane loading, such as the low-velocity impact event. The apparition of high quality manufactured ultra-thin plies, such as the composite material product TeXtreme of Oxeon AB, requires a detailed analysis of their damage resistance and tolerance performance under impact loading. The present work deals with a discussion of a large experimental test campaign of drop-weight impact tests and Compression After Impact (CAI) tests on ultra-thin ply based composite laminates. The composite material analysed is a plain-weave fabric with HTS45 fibers and 20 mm wide yarns, used with HexFlow RTM 6 mono-component epoxy system, and manufactured out-of-autoclave. Two ply thicknesses are considered: 0.08 mm and 0.16 mm. For each case, the same laminate thickness and stacking sequence is considered in order to define the same in-plane stiffness. The study considers different impact energy levels.

    • The study of the damage sequence in polymer-based composite laminates during an impact event is a difficult issue. The problem can be more complex when the plies are thin. In this paper, quasi-static indentation tests were conducted on thin-ply laminates to understand qualitatively the damage mechanisms and their sequence during low-velocity impact loading. TeXtreme® plain weave plies were used with two different thicknesses, 0.08 mm and 0.16 mm (referenced as ultra-thin-ply and thin-ply, respectively), and tested under different load levels. Load-displacement curves were analyzed and the extent of damage was inspected using optical microscopy and ultrasonic technique. The results showed that the damage onset occurs earlier in thin-ply laminates. The damage onset in thin-ply laminates is matrix cracking which induces delaminations, whereas for ultra-thin-ply laminates is due to delaminations which are induced by shear forces and small amount of matrix cracking. Moreover, the fiber breakage appears earlier in ultra-thin-ply laminates.
