  • Inflammation- and tumor-induced anorexia and weight loss require MyD88 in hematopoietic/myeloid cells but not in brain endothelial or neural cells.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: FASEB journal : official publication of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. - : Wiley. - 1530-6860 .- 0892-6638. ; 27:5, s. 1973-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Loss of appetite is a hallmark of inflammatory diseases. The underlying mechanisms remain undefined, but it is known that myeloid differentiation primary response gene 88 (MyD88), an adaptor protein critical for Toll-like and IL-1 receptor family signaling, is involved. Here we addressed the question of determining in which cells the MyD88 signaling that results in anorexia development occurs by using chimeric mice and animals with cell-specific deletions. We found that MyD88-knockout mice, which are resistant to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced anorexia, displayed anorexia when transplanted with wild-type bone marrow cells. Furthermore, mice with a targeted deletion of MyD88 in hematopoietic or myeloid cells were largely protected against LPS-induced anorexia and displayed attenuated weight loss, whereas mice with MyD88 deletion in hepatocytes or in neural cells or the cerebrovascular endothelium developed anorexia and weight loss of similar magnitude as wild-type mice. Furthermore, in a model for cancer-induced anorexia-cachexia, deletion of MyD88 in hematopoietic cells attenuated the anorexia and protected against body weight loss. These findings demonstrate that MyD88-dependent signaling within the brain is not required for eliciting inflammation-induced anorexia. Instead, we identify MyD88 signaling in hematopoietic/myeloid cells as a critical component for acute inflammatory-driven anorexia, as well as for chronic anorexia and weight loss associated with malignant disease.

  • MyD88 in hematopoietic cells, but not in cerebrovascular endothelial cells or neural cells, is critical for inflammation- and cancer-induced loss of appetite
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Loss of appetite concomitant with reduced food intake is a hallmark of both acute and chronic inflammatory diseases. Yet, despite extensive investigations, the underlying mechanisms remain undefined. Here we addressed this issue using mice lacking MyD88, critical for Tolllike and IL-1 receptor family signaling, generally or in specific cell types. Ubiquitous null deletions conferred complete resistance to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced anorexia, but this resistance was lost when knock-out mice subjected to whole-body irradiation to delete hematopoietic cells were transplanted with wild-type bone-marrow. In line with this observation, mice lacking MyD88 in hematopoietic cells were largely protected against LPS-induced anorexia, whereas mice with abrogated MyD88 signaling in neural cells, being leaner and smaller, developed anorexia of similar magnitude as wild-type littermates. The effect of hematopoietic MyD88-deletion on feeding seemed however partially dissociated from the effect on body weight, since LPS triggered weight loss, although attenuated, in these mutants. Furthermore, MyD88 deficiency in the cerebrovascular endothelium affected neither LPS-induced anorexia nor weight loss. In a model for the cancer anorexia-cachexia syndrome, inactivation of MyD88 in hematopoietic cells strongly impaired the anorexia development and protected against body weight loss. These findings identify hematopoietic cells as a critical nexus for acute inflammatory driven anorexia as well as for chronic anorexia associated with malignant disease.

  • Patients with stress-induced exhaustion disorder and their experiences of physical activity prescription in a group context
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Global Health Action. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1654-9716 .- 1654-9880. ; 16:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Physical activity is a useful means to improve symptoms and memory performance to some extent in individuals with stress-induced exhaustion disorder. Individuals in this group commonly do not need to reach the recommended levels of physical activity. Developing methods to support physical activity as a lasting behaviour is important. Objective: The aim of the study was to explore the processes involved when using physical activity prescription as part of rehabilitation in a group context for individuals with stress-induced exhaustion disorder.Method: A total of 27 individuals with stress-induced exhaustion disorder participated in six focus groups. The informants underwent a multimodal intervention including prescription of physical activity. The physical activity prescription had a cognitive behaviour approach and included information about physical activity, home assignments and goal setting. The data was analysed with grounded theory method using constant comparison. Results: The analysis of the data was developed into the core category ‘trying to integrate physical activity into daily life in a sustainable way’, and three categories: ‘acceptance of being good enough’, ‘learning physical activity by doing’ and ‘advocation for physical activity in rehabilitation’. The informants identified that during the physical activity prescription sessions they learned what physical activity was, what was ‘good enough’ in terms of dose and intensity of physical activity, and how to listen to the body’s signals. These insights, in combination with performing physical activity during home assignments and reflecting with peers, helped them incorporate physical activity in a new and sustainable way. A need for more customised physical activity with the ability to adjust to individual circumstances was requested. Conclusion: Prescription of physical activity in a group context may be a useful method of managing and adjusting physical activity in a sustainable way for individuals with stress-induced exhaustion disorder. However, identifying people who need more tailored support is important.

  • “Recovery activities are needed every step of the way”—exploring the process of long-term recovery in people previously diagnosed with exhaustion disorder
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: BMC Psychology. - : Springer Nature. - 2050-7283. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Sick-leave rates are high due to stress-related illnesses, but little is still known about the process of recovery from these conditions. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of the recovery process, 6 to 10 years after treatment in people previously diagnosed with exhaustion disorder (ED), focusing on facilitators and barriers for the process of recovery from ED, and recovery activities experienced as helpful during the recovery process.Method: Thirty-eight participants (average age: 52 years, 32 females) previously diagnosed with ED were interviewed with semi-structured interviews 6–10 years after undergoing treatment. The interviews were analyzed with thematic analysis. Results: Three themes resulted from the analysis. The first theme, “A long and rocky road”, summarizes the fluctuating path to feeling better and emphasizes barriers and facilitators that affected the process of recovery, with a focus on external life events and the participants’ own behaviors. Facilitators were changing workplace, receiving support, a reduction in stressors, and changed behaviors. Barriers were a poor work environment, caregiver responsibilities, negative life events and lack of support. The second theme “Recovery activities are needed every step of the way” describes how both the need for recovery activities and the types of activities experienced as helpful changed during the recovery process, from low-effort recovery activities for long periods of time to shorter and more active recovery activities. Recovery activities were described as important for self-care but hard to prioritize in everyday life. The last theme, “Reorienting to a new place”, captures the struggle to cope with the remaining impact of ED, and how internal facilitators in terms of understanding and acceptance were important to reorient and adjust to a new way of functioning. Conclusions: Recovering from ED is a long and ongoing process where recovery activities are needed every step of the way. Our results highlight the importance of supporting personal recovery and long-term behavioral change, addressing individual stressors that may perpetuate the condition, and adjusting recovery activities according to where the person is in the recovery process.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT0073772. Registered on March 8, 2017. This study was pre-registered on Open Science Framework (osf.io).

  • Förbränning av utsorterade avfallsfraktioner
  • 2005

  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to investigate the voice in Elin Wägner’s novel Silverforsen (1924), Selma Lagerlöf’s Löwensköld trilogy (1925–1928) and Klara Johanson’s causeries in the feminist weekly newspaper Tidevarvet 1923–1924, in relation to women’s suffrage. Swedish women were finally granted the right to vote in 1921. The female political voice arroused high expectations of societal change: the female body was supposed to provide a female perspective on politics. However, the connection between the body and the voice was imagined differently by different theorists of emancipation. Therefore, in order to pinpoint the functions of the voice, the functions of corporeality need examination as well. The readings of the novels and causeries by Wägner, Lagerlöf and Johanson reveal striking discrepancies in the functions of the voice in relation to corporeality. The examination of the functions of the voice includes an account of the genre, the mood and the narrator’s voice as well as the characters’ ability to speak and the workings of the voice in the societies established in Silverforsen, the Löwensköld trilogy and Johanson’s causeries. A central argument of the dissertation concerns Wägner’s, Lagerlöf’s and Johanson’s various constructions of identity. Identity proves to be of equal importance to legitimate political action. Though, while Wägner’s notion of identity is based primarily on sex and inspired by the voice of God, Lagerlöf complicates the criteria for identity, featuring nationality, family and social class as primary distinctions. Johanson, for her part, rejects the idea of a shared gender identity all together. She still emphasises the need for politics to voice identity, although identity in her account includes only one single person.Contemporary theories on gender by Ellen Key, Mathilde Vaerting, Rosa Mayreder, Otto Weininger, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Alexandra Kollontay and Olive Schreiner form a context for the relations between voice, corporeality and emancipation developed by the novels and causeries. The readings of the literary texts are also, in their turn, intended to shed light on the theories of emancipation. This study proposes a new metatheoretical model instead of the heavily criticized distinction between essentialism and constructivism, by focusing the relation between corporeality and meaning, using the rhetorical tropes to analyse these relations. The tropological model may specify the body of the early twentieth century identity politics.

  • Countermeasures against alkali-related problems during combustion of biomass in a circulating fluidized bed boiler
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Science. ; 63, s. 5314-5329
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this work was to study different ways to mitigate alkali-related problems during combustionof biomass in circulating fluidized beds. Wood chips and wood pellets were fired together withstraw pellets, while the tendency to agglomerate and form deposits was monitored. In addition to areference case, a number of countermeasures were applied in related tests. Those were addition of elementalsulphur, ammonium sulphate and kaolin to a bed of silica sand, as well as use of olivine sand andblast-furnace slag as alternative bed materials. The agglomeration temperature, composition and structureof bed-ash samples were examined. The flue-gas composition, including gaseous alkali chlorides, wasmeasured in the hot flue gases and in the stack. Particles in the flue gas were collected and analysed forsize distribution and composition. Deposits were collected on a probe in hot flue gases and their amountand composition were analysed. Addition of kaolin was found to be the best method to counteract theagglomeration problem. The deposition problem is effectively counteracted with addition of ammoniumsulphate, while kaolin is too expensive to be used commercially against deposits, and sulphur is lesseffective than ammonium sulphate.
