    • The need for organizations to operate in changing environments is addressed by proposing an approach that integrates organizational development with information system (IS) development taking into account changes in the application context of the solution. This is referred to as Capability Driven Development (CDD). A meta-model representing business and IS designs consisting of goals, key performance indicators, capabilities, context and capability delivery patterns, is being proposed. The use of themeta-model is validated in three industrial case studies as part of an ongoing collaboration project, whereas one case is presented in the paper. Issues related to the use of the CDD approach, namely, CDD methodology and tool support are also discussed.

    • The CaaS project will elaborate the Capability Driven Development (CDD) approach that will allow digital enterprises to exploit the notion of 'capability' as a means of both designing for services and with services. This deliverable defines an initial set of requirements for CDD. These requirements are provided by the industrial partners through exploration of their use cases. The goal of this deliverable is to identify potential benefits that the CaaS approach could bring to the use cases as well the features to be included the CDD methodology. The requirements are elicited from the use case partners during semi-structured interviews. They are documented in a form of goal models, actor models and concept models for each partner separately. Information documented in these models is used to define envisioned capabilities to be design and delivered during the project as well as to establish the scope of each use case. The use case scope definition focuses on use case goals, causes of capability delivery variability, capability delivery context, functions to be provided in the use case as well as potential capability delivery adjustments. The use case specific models are combined together to obtain a preliminary set of general requirements for CDD. These requirements show CDD goals, types of stakeholders, types of context and types of adjustments. The deliverable ends with concluding remarks about the partners’ expectations for CDD. The requirements for the use cases described in this deliverable will be further elaborated in the final requirements document deliverable D1.4 and will be iteratively refined during the use case elaboration performed in work packages WP2, WP3 and WP4.

  • Strategies for Capability Modelling : Analysis Based on Initial Experiences

    • Competitiveness and growth on an international market is for many businesses tightly coupled to their ability of quickly implementing new company strategies, business services and products or market entries. Capability management is among the approaches proposed to tackle these challenges. A feature is capturing the context of capability delivery and providing mechanisms for configuring the delivery. Among the work on capability management is the capability-driven design and delivery (CDD) approach that has been proposed by the EU-FP7 project CaaS. The aim of this paper is to contribute to CDD by (i) introducing different strategies for capability modelling, (ii) elaborating on the differences between these strategies, and (iii) contributing to an understanding of what strategy should be used under what preconditions. The paper addresses these aspects by describing the strategies and initial experiences gathered with them.

  • Untangling the relationship between degrowth and ICT

    • [Background] While degrowth is a socio-economic paradigm still known to relatively few, the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports emphasise its importance in investigating and realising pathways to sustainability. There is increasing evidence that information and communication technology (ICT) plays an important role in sustainability pathways. But research about the relationship between degrowth and ICT is yet scarce. [Aims] We aim at exploring the relationship between degrowth and ICT to identify emerging themes and research implications. [Method] We conduct an exploratory literature review to gather background knowledge and complement it with focus groups, expert interviews, and Reddit discussions to elicit knowledge, reflections, informed opinions and attitudes towards degrowth. [Results] Several themes that require careful consideration emerge in our study, such as the effect of terminology, the reliance on high-tech solutions, and trade-offs that come with decreasing the use of ICT. [Contribution] We also define the concepts degrowth of ICT and degrowth by ICT, and discuss how degrowth and ICT relate to each other. We hope our work enables further research into the role of ICT in degrowth scenarios supporting a shift to strong sustainability.

  • A Method for Context Modelling in Capability Management

    • Enterprises exist in the context of their dynamically changing environment, which has a strong impact on service design and delivery. Within areas such as ambient intelligence or robotics, most relevant context has a physical nature. However, the context of an enterprise requires a different conceptual-ization of context awareness. Beyond physical context, enterprises need to be aware of their market, legal and social context. Moreover, in order to monitor context and configure services systematically, we need a context modelling method that is integrated within enterprise modelling and supports in-formation and communication technology (ICT) engineering and runtime. The work in this paper has been performed as part of developing Capability Driven Development (CDD), a new paradigm for ICT design where services are customised on the basis of the essential business capabilities and deliv-ery is adjusted according to the current context. The contributions of the paper are (i) the investiga-tion of industrial needs for context modelling, (ii) eCoM, a context modelling method for enterprise ICT addressing such needs, iii) application of the method in an industrial use case and (iv) the evolu-tion of eCoM based on various evaluation cycles by means of Framework for Evaluation in Design Science Research (FEDS).

  • Strategies for Continuous Balancing in Future Power Systems with High Wind and Solar Shares

    • The use of wind power has grown strongly in recent years and is expected to continue to increase in the coming decades. Solar power is also expected to increase significantly. In a power system, a continuous balance is maintained between total production and demand. This balancing is currently mainly managed with conventional power plants, but with larger amounts of wind and solar power, other sources will also be needed. Interesting possibilities include continuous control of wind and solar power, battery storage, electric vehicles, hydrogen production, and other demand resources with flexibility potential. The aim of this article is to describe and compare the different challenges and future possibilities in six systems concerning how to keep a continuous balance in the future with significantly larger amounts of variable renewable power production. A realistic understanding of how these systems plan to handle continuous balancing is central to effectively develop a carbon-dioxide-free electricity system of the future. The systems included in the overview are the Nordic synchronous area, the island of Ireland, the Iberian Peninsula, Texas (ERCOT), the central European system, and Great Britain.

  • Aligning Communication Analysis with the Unifying Meta-Model for Enterprise Modeling

    • Enterprise Modeling (EM) captures and represents organizational know-ledge in models that cover different views of the enterprise. The models can be leveraged in the development of information systems. Investigating how to use them as input to Model-Driven Development (MDD) is an open challenge. This paper explores how a holistic EM approach, represented by a unifying meta-model, can benefit from integrating with Communication Analysis, a communication-oriented business process modeling and requirements engineering method. As a first step towards an integrated EM-enabled MDD approach, the unifying meta-model and Communication Analysis meta-model are aligned. A set of guidelines for trans-forming models conforming to the unifying meta-model to Communication Analysis models are formulated. The approach is illustrated using of a lab demo.
