  • Custody Transfers of Children and Young Adults in Foster Care
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: GENEALOGY. - : MDPI AG. - 2313-5778. ; 5:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The high-profile case of "Little Heart", a 3-year-old girl who, shortly after being reunited with her biological parents, was found dead in her home, has contributed to strengthening the rights of children placed in foster care in Sweden. However, the stability of children placed in foster care is not a new issue. In the last decade, the number of custody transfers has more than doubled. In this study, critical discourse analysis was used to study which discourses on children's needs and parental rights had guided 89 district court decisions. The results show that custody transfer takes place at a younger age and is still based on an adult perspective, and children's voices and wishes are often overlooked. The dominant discourses in the submissions of the social services, as well as in the district court decisions, are about continuity, connection, and security, concepts and formulations that are replicated from the preparatory work for the legislation. This study demonstrates the need for expertise and reflection in custody investigations into how questions are asked and how the responses are conveyed, as well as the need to intensify and strengthen the work of making children involved and heard in accordance with the aims of the Children's Convention.

  • Social work students' professional preferences
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Social Work Education. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0261-5479 .- 1470-1227.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What visions do social work students on the threshold of professional life have for future social work? This study aimed to investigate the professional preferences and organizational factors that are decisive in the career choices of newly graduated students. The study was conducted through a survey addressed to all social work students who graduated in the spring semester of 2018 from nine Swedish universities. The results show that the students expect a thorough introduction, a reasonable workload, and access to continuous support in their work. Furthermore, they emphasized the importance of professional autonomy and working conditions that enable them to work according to the professional, ethical principles of the profession. Most students wish to begin their professional careers in public practice within social services. However, certain areas of activity within social services appear to remain pass-through professions creating high financial, professional, and human resource costs. About a third of the respondents can imagine doing social work privately or working as a consultant. In conclusion, for employers to be able to recruit and retain competent staff, organizational conditions that enable social workers to conduct value-based professional social work are necessary.

  • Crowding out, crowding in or just a matter of transformation? Informal financial support in Portugal and Sweden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Social Work. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1369-1457 .- 1468-2664. ; 15:3, s. 393-411
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This investigation examines the role of informal financial support among university students in two different welfare states, Portugal and Sweden. Using data from a questionnaire (N = 525), students' experiences of receiving loans and gifts, and differences in norms and attitudes towards informal financial support, are explored. The data reveal that the Swedish students receive more financial support in terms of monetary loans and gifts from persons in their social network, while for Portuguese students support from their parents to a higher degree is embedded in patterns of living conditions. Furthermore, the interaction processes of exchange of support, for both groups is characterised by reflexivity and complexity, not only framed by resource conditions, but also by relational and situational factors. The results are discussed in the theoretical framework of crowding out/crowding in theories.

  • Can we count on each other? : Reciprocity and conflicts in financial support in Sweden
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Social Welfare. - Oxford : Blackwell. - 1369-6866 .- 1468-2397. ; 19:1, s. 84-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the experiences of reciprocity and conflicts in social relationships, and how these experiences are related to financial support (loans and gifts) in the wider social network. The balance of exchange within the social network as a whole is considered in relation to socio-demographic features, financial conditions and the availability of social relationships. The data are drawn from a study of financial support exchange in Sweden based on a representative survey among Swedish citizens (N=500). The results reveal that people living in economic hardship and who have more problematic life circumstances appear to be at risk of receiving more limited informal financial support by experiencing more feelings of conflicts and nonreciprocal social relations.

  • Det sociala nätverkets kapaciteter. : Om forskning kring informellt ekonomiskt och materielt stöd
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; :2, s. 47-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although social network and social support analysis has been used extensively in the social sciences over the last twenty years, little attention has been paid to the implications of social support from family, spouses and friends in the research field of poverty. This article presents a research overview of economical and material exchange as components of social support and highlights it’s meaning for groups and individuals with temporary or regular needs of provisional support. Results from more than 80 international published articles are examined with particular focus on the pattern and impact of gender, responsibility, legitimacy, autonomy and dependency. The importance of changes in family structures and political expectations on informal social support is discussed, along with the effects of different welfare systems. Finally, the article propose vital research questions about the importance, character and social implications of informal economic support in Sweden, in the realm of a specific welfare state regime with institutionalised and in-bedded norms of redistribution and reciprocity.

  • For better or for worse? : Transformation of social network relations due to long-term illness
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Social Work. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1369-1457 .- 1468-2664. ; 19:5, s. 795-813
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores whether, and if so how, long-term illness affects and changes personal social relations and how these transformations are related to diagnosis, length of the sick leave, age and gender. It is based on qualitative in-depth interviews (N = 10) and a broader representative survey among long-term ill people (n = 319). The results reveal that illness affects the social relationships in both positive and negative directions. On the one hand, the proximity and mobilization of support from family and friends increases during the period of illness and new relationships are included in the networks. On the other hand, the distance within some relationships increases, and some disappear or become less support-rewarding. While the need for social relationships seems, for the majority, to be essential and constant, the results show that the circle of close personal relationships is shifting and that emotional intensity and reciprocal exchange vary.
