  • En enkel till Himlingøje. Dödens mode 1: ett virrvarr av varianter : Praktgravar i Sydskandinavien under 1000 år: ca 150 e.Kr. – ca 1050 e.Kr
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • One purpose of this dissertation is to show how these graves, set apart due to their often spectacular exterior and an abundance of rich contents, have been inspired as to construction and ideological contents by Roman influence from the south when local Scandinavian chieftains were buried with finesse extraordinaire – from the earliest Roman Iron Age via the more complex societal forms of the Migration and Vendel Periods to the regulated and strictly stratified society of the Viking Period. The dissertation also intends to show how the most magnificent burial customs the Scandinavian Iron Age was not necessarily influenced only by religious beliefs: imported (Roman) prestige goods and, in time, increasingly more lavish local props to bring into the grave became one way for the German farmer and warrior elite groups to manifest and maintain their superior social position and thus accelerating class differences in the Iron Age society of southern Scandinavia. I suggest that this type of German burial customs was dictated by a continuously changing fashion among chieftains and princes of northern Europe as they journeyed from life to death, rather than any ancient religious belief. The main characteristic of the elite strata of the Scandinavian Iron Age was long-distance communication: contacts with distant chiefdoms and the ability to travel themselves. The dissertation also aims to reinstate the cultural historical perspective that i.a. sees material remains as the result of culture, rather than as culture itself. In direct opposition to the over-theoretical archaeology of the late 20th century and the early 21st century I propose the use of a methodological analysis for the study of rich graves. The text also proposes to act as a counterpoint to the sort of ghostly impersonal presentations that too often written are by archaeologists.

  • Scientific analyses of Sösdala objects
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The Sösdala Horsemen - and the equestrian elite of fifth century Europe. - 0107-2854. - 9788793423152 ; 99, s. 131-149
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Scientific analyses of objects from Sösdala I are presented. Punch marks on 57 gilt silver mounts were examined under microscope, revealing a high quality of craftsmanship. In all, 27 different punched motifs have been described. By comparative studies, objects with punch marks made by the same tools have been identified. By interlinking the objects, three different sets of tools have been identified, plausibly representing three different craftsmen/workshops. One pendant is a loner of lower quality and probably a replacement. Trial marks are punched on the back of some objects and on others motifs are sketched. Analyses of a sample of 12 silver mounts revealed that the alloy consisted of 85-95% silver. Some alloy variations support the grouping based on punch analysis. One object with niello inlays was mapped with SEM/EDS. The niello was shown to consist of pure silver sulphide according to Roman tradition, indicating the manufacturing date to before the end of the 5th century AD.

  • Sösdala interpreted in its glocal context
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The Sösdala horsemen. - Moesgård : Jutland Archaeological ociety. - 9788793423152 ; , s. 329-349
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The three finds of horse tack from Sösdala and Fulltofta can be approached from many different angles. To conclude the publication we have chosen to present reconstructions and comment on chronology, provenance and historical background. The workshop that produced the silver mounts of Sösdala I was probably situated at a centre somewhere in an area circumscribed by Untersiebenbrunn, Coşoveni, Crimea, Kačin and Jakuszowice. The deposition of dismantled horse tack on the top of gravel hills is explainable by references to Nomadic funerary rituals. The paper concludes with a “biography” of the three finds based on written sources and the archaeological record.

  • The Migration Period landscape of central Scania
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The Sösdala horsemen. - Højbjerg : Jutland archaeological society. - 9788793423152 ; , s. 77-105
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A background is given for six exclusive Migration Period finds from central Scania (Tormestorp, Sösdala, Göingeholm, Sjörup, Fulltofta and Claestorp). The area is delimited by uninhabitable horsts and situated in the northern more forested part of Scania. There is long settlement continuity but the archaeological record is relatively poor in comparison to the plains in southern and north-eastern Scania. The six finds mark something new in the area, a presence of warriors connected to the south-east European martial elite. The area is placed at the interface between two major polities in the south-west and north-east. Various reasons why elite warriors were placed here are discussed.
