Arkeologiska undersökningar i Jordbro 2017-19 : Gravar och aktivitetsytor från bronsålder och äldre järnålder på̊ Jordbrogravfältet (Österhaninge 182

- Under tre år (2017–19) har institutionen för arkeologi och antikens kultur bedrivit fältkurser på Jordbrogravfältet i Österhaninge, Södermanland (L2014:3046). Sex stensättningar undersöktes på gravfältet. En rund övertorvad stensättning i gravfältets sydöstra utkant, en oregelbunden i gravfältet mellersta del, samt en rund, en fyrsidig och två tresidiga gravar i gravfältets nordöstra del. Samtliga stensättningar väster om gångvägen tolkades utifrån formen på stenkistor och ned- grävningar samt fynd av tandemalj som jordbegravningar, vilka indirekt kan dateras till huvud- sakligen romersk järnålder. Den övertorvade stensättningen i den sydöstra delen var en krema- tionsgrav med något senare datering i övergången mellan romersk järnålder–folkvandringstid vilket antyder en generell horisontell stratigrafi i sydöstlig riktning. Gravarna i den nordöstra delen överlagrade delvis åtta ben- och keramikdepositioner/gravgömmor, tre mindre gravar från yngre bronsålder samt boplatslämningar från stenålder. I området utan synliga anläggningar syd- öst om gravfältet grävdes sammanlagt 16 sökschakt om 1x4–7m. I dessa framkom stolphål och odlingspår från huvudsakligen historisk tid, men även en härdbotten och en nedgrävning med krossad keramik av äldre järnålderskaraktär.

- The first meeting in Nordic Theoretical Archaeology Group (Nordic TAG) was held in 1985. The – so far – last meeting in Nordic TAG was held in Copenhagen in 2015. At this meeting, the theme was “the Next 30 years in Theoretical Archaeology” – or in other words the aim wasto discussin which direction theories in the archaeological discipline will develop and especially what new theories, methodologies and perspectives might influence the field in the future. Tragicomically – or prophetically – no meetings have been organized since then. Now almost five years later we must ask: what is the future of Nordic TAG, and what does the lack of it tell us about the development of theoretical archaeology in the Nordic countries today?

Sub-Barrier Coulomb Excitation of ^110Sn and Its Implications for the ^100Sn Shell Closure

- The first excited 2+ state of the unstable isotope 110Sn has been studied in safe Coulomb excitation at 2.82 MeV/u using the MINIBALL array at the REX-ISOLDE post accelerator at CERN. This is the first measurement of the reduced transition probability of this state using this method for a neutron deficient Sn isotope. The strength of the approach lies in the excellent peak-to-background ratio that is achieved. The extracted reduced transition probability, B(E2:0+-->2+)=0.220±0.022e2b2, strengthens the observation of the evolution of the B(E2) values of neutron deficient Sn isotopes that was observed recently in intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation of 108Sn. It implies that the trend of these reduced transition probabilities in the even-even Sn isotopes is not symmetric with respect to the midshell mass number A=116 as 100Sn is approached.

- In recent social theory, the idea of social entities has been questioned, pointing to multivocality and the problems involved in defining social totalities. It is argued that sociocultural systems are more likely to be 'open', with fuzzy boundaries, and populated by knowledgeable heterogeneous agents. In this text, we propose an operative social theory, eliminating the need for pre-defined social entities like region, social system, culture, society, or ethnic group. The archaeological object in a micro-archaeological approach is not a closed and homogeneous social totality, nor does it seek to reach an understanding of meaning, but rather attempts to identify the structurating practices, the regulative actions operating in a field of humans and things unbound by spatial or social boundaries. In order to address these issues more systematically, we discuss social action, materialities and the constitution of archaeological evidence. We depart from Sartre's concept of serial action, which implies that materialities and social agency are integrated elements in the structuration process. Patterns of structurating practice can thus be, at least partially, retrieved from the fragmented material evidence studied by the archaeologist. We exemplify the applicability of the microarchaeological approach in four analytical fields: spheres of exchange, spatial structurating of landscapes, household organisation, and social aspects of corporeality.

- Pictorial and visual elements are special types of archaeological data that transgress boundaries: between us and the past and between the material and immaterial. Traditionally, images have been discussed in terms of what they represent, mean or symbolize. In this volume, the authors explore other ways in which images aect and engage the beholder and the modes in which they are entangled in past worlds. The articles comprise examples from various regions and time periods and include a diverse array of topics including northern European rock art of the Neolithic and Bronze Age, anthropomorphic aspects of ceramic pots and figures in gold, erotic themes on children’s burial vessels, and nineteenth-century rock art created by quarantined sailors in Australia.

- This collection of texts is a first step towards providing a theoretical and methodological platform for the study of social encounters. The social encounter is a particular sort of concept, focusing on confusion, tension, trauma, and possibly social change that may emerge in situations of contact when people and things interact. A social encounter is, however, not only about negotiation or contemplating existence, but is rather about what happens when people interact actively, when they involve themselves with people and materialities, when they move around, fetch things, use things, leave things etc. The repeated social encounter is often a confrontation with something, such as an opinion, a performance, or with materialities and the effects are often unpredictable. Encounters may reproduce a social pattern, but also contain potential for transformation and change. Such varied responses to encounters will certainly have effects on the archaeological record. The primary focus of the volume is the effects and processes involved in intra- and inter-societal encounters. The collection hence fills a theoretical and methodological gap in the study of the encounter in archaeology. There is a need for elaborating aspects of postcolonial theory in order to develop new ways of approaching the archaeological record. The articles of this volume include examples from various regions and time periods. They range from Scandinavian Stone Age, through Buddhist social practices of the first millennium AD, Maya warfare and ideology, to Aboriginal-European encounters in 20th century Australia.
