    • We present radial velocities for five member stars of the recently discovered young (age similar or equal to 100-150 Myr) stellar system Price-Whelan 1 (PW1), which is located far away in the Galactic Halo (D similar or equal to 29 kpc, Z similar or equal to 15 kpc), and that is probably associated with the leading arm (LA) of the Magellanic Stream. We measure the systemic radial velocity of PW 1, V-r = 275 +/- 10 km s(-1), significantly larger than the velocity of the LA gas in the same direction. We re-discuss the main properties and the origin of this system in the light of these new observations, computing the orbit of the system and comparing its velocity with that of the HI in its surroundings. We show that the bulk of the gas at the velocity of the stars is more than 10 deg (5 kpc) away from PW 1 and the velocity difference between the gas and the stars becomes larger as gas closer to the stars is considered. We discuss the possibilities that (1) the parent gas cloud was dissolved by the interaction with the Galactic gas, and (2) that the parent cloud is the high-velocity cloud (HVC) 287.5+22.5 + 240, lagging behind the stellar system by similar or equal to 25 km s(-1) and similar or equal to 10 deg similar or equal to 5 kpc. This HVC, which is part of the LA, has metallicity similar to PW 1, displays a strong magnetic field that should help to stabilize the cloud against ram pressure, and shows traces of molecular hydrogen. We also show that the system is constituted of three distinct pieces that do not differ only by position in the sky but also by stellar content.

  • A Panoramic Landscape of the Sagittarius Stream in Gaia DR2 Revealed with the STREAMFINDER Spyglass

    • We present the first full six-dimensional panoramic portrait of the Sagittarius stream, obtained by searching for wide stellar streams in the Gaia DR2 data set with the STREAMFINDER algorithm. We use the kinematic behavior of the sample to devise a selection of Gaia RR Lyrae, providing excellent distance measurements along the stream. The proper motion data are complemented with radial velocities from public surveys. We find that the global morphological and kinematic properties of the Sagittarius stream are still reasonably well reproduced by the simple Law & Majewski model (LM10), although the model overestimates the leading arm and trailing arm distances by up to similar to 15%. The sample newly reveals the leading arm of the Sagittarius stream as it passes into very crowded regions of the Galactic disk toward the Galactic anticenter direction. Fortuitously, this part of the stream is almost exactly at the diametrically opposite location from the Galactic center to the progenitor, which should allow an assessment of the influence of dynamical friction and self-gravity in a way that is nearly independent of the underlying Galactic potential model.

  • Charting the Galactic Acceleration Field. I. A Search for Stellar Streams with Gaia DR2 and EDR3 with Follow-up from ESPaDOnS and UVES

    • We present maps of the stellar streams detected in the Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) and Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) catalogs using the STREAMFINDER algorithm. We also report the spectroscopic follow-up of the brighter DR2 stream members obtained with the high-resolution CFHT/ESPaDOnS and VLT/UVES spectrographs as well as with the medium-resolution NTT/EFOSC2 spectrograph. Two new stellar streams that do not have a clear progenitor are detected in DR2 (named Hrid and Gunnthra), and seven are detected in EDR3 (named Gaia-6 to Gaia-12). Several candidate streams are also identified. The software also finds very long tidal tails associated with the 15 globular clusters: NGC 288, NGC 1261, NGC 1851, NGC 2298, NGC 2808, NGC 3201, M68, omega Cen, NGC 5466, Palomar 5, M5, NGC 6101, M92, NGC 6397, and NGC 7089. These stellar streams will be used in subsequent contributions in this series to chart the properties of the Galactic acceleration field on similar to 100 pc to similar to 100 kpc scales.

  • Detection of Strong Epicyclic Density Spikes in the GD-1 Stellar Stream : An Absence of Evidence for the Influence of Dark Matter Subhalos?

    • The density variations in thin stellar streams may encode important information on the nature of dark matter. For instance, if dark matter aggregates into massive subhalos, these perturbers are expected to scatter stars out of dynamically cold stellar streams, possibly leading to detectable gaps in those structures. Here, we reexamine the density variations in the GD-1 stream, using Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) astrometry and Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System photometry, together with high-precision radial velocities measured with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope/ESPaDOnS and Very Large Telescope/Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph instruments and complemented with public radial velocity catalogs. We show that after correcting for projection effects, the density profile exhibits high contrast periodic peaks, separated by 2.64 0.18 kpc. An N-body simulation is presented that reproduces this striking morphology with simple epicyclic motion in a smooth Galactic potential. We also discuss the reliability of measuring density variations using ground-based photometric surveys, and for the particular case of GD-1 we highlight some of the artifacts present in the Gaia DR2 catalog along its track. Massive dark subhalos do not appear to be required to explain the density clumping along GD-1.

  • Uncovering fossils of the distant Milky Way with UNIONS : NGC 5466 and its stellar stream

    • We examine the spatial clustering of blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars from the u-band of the Canada-France Imaging Survey (CFIS, a component of the Ultraviolet Near-Infrared Optical Northern Survey, or UNIONS). All major groupings of stars are associated with previously known satellites, and among these is NGC 5466, a distant (16 kpc) globular cluster. NGC 5466 reportedly possesses a long stellar stream, although no individual members of the stream have previously been identified. Using both BHBs and more numerous red giant branch stars cross-matched to Gaia Data Release 2, we identify extended tidal tails from NGC 5466 that are both spatially and kinematically coherent. Interestingly, we find that this stream does not follow the same path as the previous detection at large distances from the cluster. We trace the stream across 31° of sky and show that it exhibits a very strong distance gradient in the range 10 < Rhelio < 30 kpc. We compare our observations to simple dynamical models of the stream and find that they are able to broadly reproduce the overall path and kinematics. The fact that NGC 5466 is so distant, traces a wide range of Galactic distances, has an identified progenitor, and appears to have recently had an interaction with the Galaxy's disc makes it a unique test-case for dynamical modelling of the Milky Way.

  • THE RADIAL VELOCITY EXPERIMENT (RAVE) : FIFTH DATA RELEASE

    • Data Release 5 (DR5) of the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) is the fifth data release from a magnitude-limited (9 < I < 12) survey of stars randomly selected in the Southern Hemisphere. The RAVE medium-resolution spectra (R ∼ 7500) covering the Ca-triplet region (8410-8795 A) span the complete time frame from the start of RAVE observations in 2003 to their completion in 2013. Radial velocities from 520,781 spectra of 457,588 unique stars are presented, of which 255,922 stellar observations have parallaxes and proper motions from the Tycho-Gaia astrometric solution in Gaia DR1. For our main DR5 catalog, stellar parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, and overall metallicity) are computed using the RAVE DR4 stellar pipeline, but calibrated using recent K2 Campaign 1 seismic gravities and Gaia benchmark stars, as well as results obtained from high-resolution studies. Also included are temperatures from the Infrared Flux Method, and we provide a catalog of red giant stars in the dereddened color - (J Ks) 0 interval (0.50, 0.85) for which the gravities were calibrated based only on seismology. Further data products for subsamples of the RAVE stars include individual abundances for Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Fe, and Ni, and distances found using isochrones. Each RAVE spectrum is complemented by an error spectrum, which has been used to determine uncertainties on the parameters. The data can be accessed via the RAVE Web site or the VizieR database.

  • Distribution functions for resonantly trapped orbits in the Galactic disc

    • The present-day response of a Galactic disc stellar population to a non-axisymmetric perturbation of the potential has previously been computed through perturbation theory within the phase-space coordinates of the unperturbed axisymmetric system. Such an Eulerian linearized treatment, however, leads to singularities at resonances, which prevent quantitative comparisons with data. Here, we manage to capture the behaviour of the distribution function (DF) at a resonance in a Lagrangian approach, by averaging the Hamiltonian over fast angle variables and re-expressing the DF in terms of a new set of canonical actions and angles variables valid in the resonant region. We then follow the prescription of Binney, assigning to the resonant DF the time average along the orbits of the axisymmetric DF expressed in the new set of actions and angles. This boils down to phase-mixing the DF in terms of the new angles, such that the DF for trapped orbits depends only on the new set of actions. This opens the way to quantitatively fitting the effects of the bar and spirals to Gaia data in terms of DFs in action space.

  • Tracing the Hercules stream with Gaia and LAMOST : new evidence for a fast bar in the Milky Way

    • The length and pattern speed of the Milky Way bar are still controversial. Photometric and spectroscopic surveys of the inner Galaxy, as well as gas kinematics, favour a long and slowly rotating bar, with corotation around a Galactocentric radius of 6 kpc. On the other hand, the existence of the Hercules stream in local velocity space favours a short and fast bar with corotation around 4 kpc. This follows from the fact that the Hercules stream looks like a typical signature of the outer Lindblad resonance of the bar. As we showed recently, reconciling this local stream with a slow bar would need to find a yet unknown alternative explanation, based, for instance, on the effect of spiral arms. Here, by combining the TGAS catalogue of the Gaia DR1 with LAMOST radial velocities, we show that the position of Hercules in velocity space as a function of radius in the outer Galaxy indeed varies exactly as predicted by fast bar models with a pattern speed no less than 1.8 times the circular frequency at the Sun's position.

  • The Hidden Past of M92 : Detection and Characterization of a Newly Formed 17 degrees Long Stellar Stream Using the Canada-France Imaging Survey

    • We present an analysis of the structure, kinematics, and orbit of a newly found stellar stream emanating from the globular cluster M92 (NGC 6341). This stream was discovered in an improved matched-filter map of the outer Galaxy, based on a color-color-magnitude diagram, created using photometry from the Canada-France Imaging Survey and the Pan-STARRS 1 3 pi survey. We find the stream to have a length of 17 degrees (2.5 kpc at the distance of M92), a width dispersion of 029(42 pc), and a stellar mass of [3.17 0.89] x 10(4)M(10% of the stellar mass of the current main body of M92). We examine the kinematics of main-sequence, red giant, and blue horizontal branch stars belonging to the stream and that have proper motion measurements from the second data release of Gaia.N-body simulations suggest that the stream was likely formed very recently (during the last similar to 500 Myr) forcing us to question the orbital origin of this ancient, metal-poor globular cluster.
