  • A Composite Corrosion Inhibitor of MgAl Layered Double Hydroxides Co-Intercalated with Hydroxide and Organic Anions for Carbon Steel in Simulated Carbonated Concrete Pore Solutions
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Electrochemical Society. - : ELECTROCHEMICAL SOC INC. - 0013-4651 .- 1945-7111. ; 166:11, s. C3106-C3113
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Corrosion of steel in concrete has resulted in shorter service life of concrete constructions and it may also cause serious safety accident. Chloride attack and carbonation of the concrete are two of the most crucial trigger factors for the initiation of corrosion. In order to protect the reinforced steel in concrete from corrosion, in this work, a composite inhibitor of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalated with organic phthalates (PTL) and hydroxide ions (MgAl-LDHs-OH-PTL) were synthesized by calcination-reconstruction methods in ambient atmosphere. The structure, composition and morphology of the prepared MgAl-LDHs-OH-PTL were obtained by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy, respectively. The electrochemical measurements indicated that the inhibition efficiency of MgAl-LDHs-OH-PTL for carbon steel in the simulated carbonated concrete pore (SCCP) solutions reached more than 90% when its concentration was 20 g/L. It was found that the MgAl-LDHs-OH-PTL possessed multifunctional protection roles for the carbon steel in concrete, which mainly included decrease of aggressive Cl-ions, increase of the pH of SCCP solutions and release of PTL anions to the solution gradually. The work indicated the promising potential of LDHs compounds as effective multifunctional inhibitors in the field of corrosion protection of reinforced concrete.

  • Insight into the Fabrication of ZnAl Layered Double Hydroxides Intercalated with Organic Anions and Their Corrosion Protection of Steel Reinforced Concrete
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Electrochemical Society. - : Electrochemical Society. - 0013-4651 .- 1945-7111. ; 166:16, s. C617-C623
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work provides insight into the fabrication of ZnAl layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalated with organic phthalates (PTL) and their corrosion protection of steel reinforced concrete. The structure, composition and morphology of the LDH products prepared by various methods were systematically characterized to find out the relationship of preparation-structure-properties. The ZnAl-LDH-PTL prepared by co-precipitation method presented the best performance of corrosion protection due to its good crystallinity. The corrosion protection mechanism of LDH for steel in concrete system was also discussed.

  • One thousand plant transcriptomes and the phylogenomics of green plants
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 574:7780, s. 679-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Green plants (Viridiplantae) include around 450,000-500,000 species(1,2) of great diversity and have important roles in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Here, as part of the One Thousand Plant Transcriptomes Initiative, we sequenced the vegetative transcriptomes of 1,124 species that span the diversity of plants in a broad sense (Archaeplastida), including green plants (Viridiplantae), glaucophytes (Glaucophyta) and red algae (Rhodophyta). Our analysis provides a robust phylogenomic framework for examining the evolution of green plants. Most inferred species relationships are well supported across multiple species tree and supermatrix analyses, but discordance among plastid and nuclear gene trees at a few important nodes highlights the complexity of plant genome evolution, including polyploidy, periods of rapid speciation, and extinction. Incomplete sorting of ancestral variation, polyploidization and massive expansions of gene families punctuate the evolutionary history of green plants. Notably, we find that large expansions of gene families preceded the origins of green plants, land plants and vascular plants, whereas whole-genome duplications are inferred to have occurred repeatedly throughout the evolution of flowering plants and ferns. The increasing availability of high-quality plant genome sequences and advances in functional genomics are enabling research on genome evolution across the green tree of life.

  • The rates and patterns of insertions, deletions and substitutions in mouse and rat inferred from introns
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Chinese Science Bulletin. - : Elsevier BV. - 1001-6538 .- 1861-9541 .- 2095-9273 .- 2095-9281. ; 53:18, s. 2813-2819
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The rates and patterns of InDel (insertions and deletions) and substitution in rodent (mouse and rat) have been studied. The result reveals that deletions occur more frequently than insertions, and single nucleotide insertion and deletion are the most frequent in both mouse and rat. The frequencies of both deletions and insertions decrease rapidly with increasing InDels length, and the size distributions of both insertions and deletions can be described well by power-law. There are more AT-->G than GC-->AT substitutions in the introns of rat. However, there are more GC-->AT than AT-->GC substitutions in the introns in mouse. The deletion bias found in introns in mouse and rat supports the prediction that intron insertions are more deleterious than deletions because of reduced transcription and splicing efficiency. The patterns of substitution suggest that both composition and GC content are not equilibrium in the introns in rodents.

  • Association of an estrogen-sensitive Pax1-Col11a1-Mmp3 signaling axis with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.
  • 2023
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common and progressive spinal deformity in children that exhibits striking sexual dimorphism, with girls at more than five-fold greater risk of severe disease compared to boys. Despite its medical impact, the molecular mechanisms that drive AIS are largely unknown. We previously defined a female-specific AIS genetic risk locus in an enhancer near the PAX1 gene. Here we sought to define the roles of PAX1 and newly-identified AIS-associated genes in the developmental mechanism of AIS. In a genetic study of 9,161 individuals with AIS and 80,731 unaffected controls, significant association was identified with a variant in COL11A1 encoding collagen (α1) XI (rs3753841; NM_080629_c.4004C>T; p.(Pro1335Leu); P=7.07e -11 , OR=1.118). Using CRISPR mutagenesis we generated Pax1 knockout mice ( Pax1 -/- ). In postnatal spines we found that Pax1 and collagen (α1) XI protein both localize within the intervertebral disc (IVD)-vertebral junction region encompassing the growth plate, with less collagen (α1) XI detected in Pax1 -/- spines compared to wildtype. By genetic targeting we found that wildtype Col11a1 expression in growth plate cells (GPCs) suppresses expression of Pax1 and of Mmp3 , encoding the matrix metalloproteinase 3 enzyme implicated in matrix remodeling. However, this suppression was abrogated in the presence of the AIS-associated COL11A1 P1335L mutant. Further, we found that either knockdown of the estrogen receptor gene Esr2 , or tamoxifen treatment, significantly altered Col11a1 and Mmp3 expression in GPCs. These studies support a new molecular model of AIS pathogenesis wherein genetic variation and estrogen signaling increase disease susceptibility by altering a Pax1 - Col11a1 - Mmp3 signaling axis in the growth plate.

By genetic targeting we found that wild-type Col11a1 expression in costal chondrocytes suppresses expression of Pax1 and of Mmp3, encoding the matrix metalloproteinase 3 enzyme implicated in matrix remodeling. However, the latter suppression was abrogated in the presence of the AIS-associated COL11A1P1335L mutant. Further, we found that either knockdown of the estrogen receptor gene Esr2 or tamoxifen treatment significantly altered Col11a1 and Mmp3 expression in chondrocytes. We propose a new molecular model of AIS pathogenesis wherein genetic variation and estrogen signaling increase disease susceptibility by altering a PAX1-COL11a1-MMP3 signaling axis in spinal chondrocytes.

  • Investigation and application of mussel adhesive protein nanocomposite film-forming inhibitor for reinforced concrete engineering
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Corrosion Science. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0010-938X .- 1879-0496. ; 153, s. 333-340
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A mussel adhesive protein based nanocomposite thin film was produced to be applied as surface pre-treatment or primer on rebars of reinforced concrete. The film deposition and drying processes were investigated to enhance the corrosion protection, and facilitate large-scale industrial applications. The morphology, chemical composition and microstructure of the film were characterised with SEM, EDS, Micro-IR and AFM techniques. EIS results suggested the film provides excellent and increased corrosion protection for the carbon steel in mild and extreme concrete pore solutions. In-situ AFM results demonstrated the self-healing ability of the film to the pitting corrosion.
