  • Megahertz-rate Ultrafast X-ray Scattering and Holographic Imaging at the European XFEL
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The advent of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) has revolutionized fundamental science, from atomic to condensed matter physics, from chemistry to biology, giving researchers access to X-rays with unprecedented brightness, coherence, and pulse duration. All XFEL facilities built until recently provided X-ray pulses at a relatively low repetition rate, with limited data statistics. Here, we present the results from the first megahertz repetition rate X-ray scattering experiments at the Spectroscopy and Coherent Scattering (SCS) instrument of the European XFEL. We illustrate the experimental capabilities that the SCS instrument offers, resulting from the operation at MHz repetition rates and the availability of the novel DSSC 2D imaging detector. Time-resolved magnetic X-ray scattering and holographic imaging experiments in solid state samples were chosen as representative examples, providing an ideal test-bed for operation at megahertz rates. Nevertheless, our results are relevant and applicable to any other non-destructive XFEL experiments in the soft X-ray range.

  • 3D diffractive imaging of nanoparticle ensembles using an x-ray laser
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Optica. - : Optical Society of America. - 2334-2536. ; 8:1, s. 15-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Single particle imaging at x-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) has the potential to determine the structure and dynamics of single biomolecules at room temperature. Two major hurdles have prevented this potential from being reached, namely, the collection of sufficient high-quality diffraction patterns and robust computational purification to overcome structural heterogeneity. We report the breaking of both of these barriers using gold nanoparticle test samples, recording around 10 million diffraction patterns at the European XFEL and structurally and orientationally sorting the patterns to obtain better than 3-nm-resolution 3D reconstructions for each of four samples. With these new developments, integrating advancements in x-ray sources, fast-framing detectors, efficient sample delivery, and data analysis algorithms, we illuminate the path towards sub-nano meter biomolecular imaging. The methods developed here can also be extended to characterize ensembles that are inherently diverse to obtain their full structural landscape. • Designing a Spin-Seebeck Diode
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 112:4, s. 047203-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using micromagnetic simulations, we have investigated spin dynamics in a spin-valve bilayer in the presence of a thermal gradient. The direction and the intensity of the gradient allow us to excite the spin wave modes of each layer selectively. This permits us to synchronize the magnetization precession of the two layers and to rectify the flows of energy and magnetization through the system. Our study yields promising opportunities for applications in spin caloritronics and nanophononics devices.

  • Micromagnetic simulations of spin-torque driven magnetization dynamics with spatially resolved spin transport and magnetization texture
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 96:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a simple and fast method to simulate spin-torque driven magnetization dynamics in nanopillar spin-valve structures. The approach is based on the coupling between a spin transport code based on random matrix theory and a micromagnetics finite-elements software. In this way the spatial dependence of both spin transport and magnetization dynamics is properly taken into account. Our results are compared with experiments. The excitation of the spin-wave modes, including the threshold current for steady-state magnetization precession and the nonlinear frequency shift of the modes are reproduced correctly. The giant magneto resistance effect and the magnetization switching also agree with experiment. The similarities with recently described spin-caloritronics devices are also discussed.

  • The interplay of local electron correlations and ultrafast spin dynamics in fcc Ni
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Materials Research Letters. - : Taylor & Francis. - 2166-3831. ; 11:8, s. 655-661
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The complex electronic structure of metallic ferromagnets is determined by a balance between exchange interaction, electron hopping leading to band formation, and local Coulomb repulsion. By combining high energy and temporal resolution in femtosecond time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy with ab initio time-dependent density functional theory we analyze the electronic structure in fcc Ni on the time scale of these interactions in a pump-probe experiment. We distinguish transient broadening and energy shifts in the absorption spectra, which we demonstrate to be captured by electron repopulation respectively correlation-induced modifications of the electronic structure, requiring to take the local Coulomb interaction into account.

  • Honeycomb, square, and kagome vortex lattices in superconducting systems with multiscale intervortex interactions
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 90:2, s. 020509-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recent proposal of Romero-Isart et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 145304 (2013)] to utilize the vortex lattice phases of superconducting materials to prepare a lattice for ultracold-atom-based quantum emulators raises the need to create and control vortex lattices of different symmetries. Here we propose a mechanism by which honeycomb, hexagonal, square, and kagome vortex lattices could be created in superconducting systems with multiscale intervortex interactions. Multiple scales of the intervortex interaction can be created and controlled in layered systems made of different superconducting materials or with differing interlayer spacings.

  • Phase diagrams of vortex matter with multi-scale inter-vortex interactions in layered superconductors
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0953-8984 .- 1361-648X. ; 29:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It was recently proposed to use the stray magnetic fields of superconducting vortex lattices to trap ultracold atoms for building quantum emulators. This calls for new methods for engineering and manipulating of the vortex states. One of the possible routes utilizes type-1.5 superconducting layered systems with multi-scale inter-vortex interactions. In order to explore the possible vortex states that can be engineered, we present two phase diagrams of phenomenological vortex matter models with multi-scale inter-vortex interactions featuring several attractive and repulsive length scales. The phase diagrams exhibit a plethora of phases, including conventional 2D lattice phases, five stripe phases, dimer, trimer, and tetramer phases, void phases, and stable low-temperature disordered phases. The transitions between these states can be controlled by the value of an applied external field.

  • Hierarchical structure foramtion in layered superconducting systems with multi-scale inter-vortex interactions
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-8984 .- 1361-648X. ; 25:41, s. 415702-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate the formation of hierarchical structures in two-dimensional systems with multiple length scales in the inter-particle interaction. These include states such as clusters of clusters, concentric rings, clusters inside a ring, and stripes in a cluster. We propose to realize such systems in vortex matter (where a vortex is mapped onto a particle with multi-scale interactions) in layered superconducting systems with varying inter-layer thicknesses and different layer materials.

  • Megahertz serial crystallography
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 2041-1723. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The new European X-ray Free-Electron Laser is the first X-ray free-electron laser capable of delivering X-ray pulses with a megahertz inter-pulse spacing, more than four orders of magnitude higher than previously possible. However, to date, it has been unclear whether it would indeed be possible to measure high-quality diffraction data at megahertz pulse repetition rates. Here, we show that high-quality structures can indeed be obtained using currently available operating conditions at the European XFEL. We present two complete data sets, one from the well-known model system lysozyme and the other from a so far unknown complex of a beta-lactamase from K. pneumoniae involved in antibiotic resistance. This result opens up megahertz serial femtosecond crystallography (SFX) as a tool for reliable structure determination, substrate screening and the efficient measurement of the evolution and dynamics of molecular structures using megahertz repetition rate pulses available at this new class of X-ray laser source.
