  • Phenology, biomass and reproductive characteristics of Calotropis procera (Aiton) WT Aiton in South Cairo, Egypt
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Rendiconti Lincei-Scienze Fisiche E Naturali. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2037-4631. ; 27:2, s. 197-204
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phenology is a major trait structuring life history strategies and its role in shaping plant invasions that has increasing attention. The present study aimed to examine the role of phenology, reproductive, and morphological attributes of Calotropis procera in colonizing urban areas, besides assessing its biomass and developing allometric regression equation for prediction of its biomass. Sixty-three permanent quadrats were selected to represent the distribution of C. procera in urban habitats at South Cairo Province, Egypt. The present study revealed significant positive correlation between fruiting phase of the species and temperature, as well as the vegetative phase and precipitation. C. procera is characterized by continuous flowering for 8 months, with a peak in April and May, which help in reproductive success of the species. It had its highest biomass in November (439 kg ha(-1)), but the lowest in March (343 kg ha(-1)), with an annual mean of 388 kg ha(-1). The linear regression based on plant volume as an independent variable was found to be the best fit for biomass prediction, with the highest coefficient of determination (R (2) = 0.81). The above-ground biomass of this plant encourages its potential use as a renewable energy source. Our study suggests that C. procera has efficient plastic phenological and functional attributes that may enable it to dominate many ecosystems in the future. Efficient management plans are needed to mitigate the risk of this plant on other ecosystems and conserve other native species.

  • Union of the European Phoniatricians position statement on the exit strategy of phoniatric and laryngological services: staying safe and getting back to normal after the peak of coronavirus disease 2019 (issued on 25th May 2020)
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Laryngology and Otology. - : CAMBRIDGE UNIV PRESS. - 0022-2151 .- 1748-5460. ; 134:8, s. 661-664
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background The following position statement from the Union of the European Phoniatricians, updated on 25th May 2020 (superseding the previous statement issued on 21st April 2020), contains a series of recommendations for phoniatricians and ENT surgeons who provide and/or run voice, swallowing, speech and language, or paediatric audiology services. Objectives This material specifically aims to inform clinical practices in countries where clinics and operating theatres are reopening for elective work. It endeavours to present a current European view in relation to common procedures, many of which fall under the aegis of aerosol generating procedures. Conclusion As evidence continues to build, some of the recommended practices will undoubtedly evolve, but it is hoped that the updated position statement will offer clinicians precepts on safe clinical practice.

  • G-quadruplex-binding small molecules ameliorate C9orf72 FTD/ALS pathology invitro and invivo.
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: EMBO molecular medicine. - : EMBO. - 1757-4684 .- 1757-4676. ; 10:1, s. 22-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Intronic GGGGCC repeat expansions in C9orf72 are the most common known cause of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which are characterised by degeneration of cortical and motor neurons, respectively. Repeat expansions have been proposed to cause disease by both the repeat RNA forming foci that sequester RNA-binding proteins and through toxic dipeptide repeat proteins generated by repeat-associated non-ATG translation. GGGGCC repeat RNA folds into a G-quadruplex secondary structure, and we investigated whether targeting this structure is a potential therapeutic strategy. We performed a screen that identified three structurally related small molecules that specifically stabilise GGGGCC repeat G-quadruplex RNA We investigated their effect in C9orf72 patient iPSC-derived motor and cortical neurons and show that they significantly reduce RNA foci burden and the levels of dipeptide repeat proteins. Furthermore, they also reduce dipeptide repeat proteins and improve survival invivo, in GGGGCC repeat-expressing Drosophila Therefore, small molecules that target GGGGCC repeat G-quadruplexes can ameliorate the two key pathologies associated with C9orf72 FTD/ALS These data provide proof of principle thattargeting GGGGCC repeat G-quadruplexes has therapeutic potential.

  • The globalizability of temporal discounting
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature Human Behaviour. - : Springer Nature. - 2397-3374. ; 6:10, s. 1386-1397
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Economic inequality is associated with preferences for smaller, immediate gains over larger, delayed ones. Such temporal discounting may feed into rising global inequality, yet it is unclear whether it is a function of choice preferences or norms, or rather the absence of sufficient resources for immediate needs. It is also not clear whether these reflect true differences in choice patterns between income groups. We tested temporal discounting and five intertemporal choice anomalies using local currencies and value standards in 61 countries (N = 13,629). Across a diverse sample, we found consistent, robust rates of choice anomalies. Lower-income groups were not significantly different, but economic inequality and broader financial circumstances were clearly correlated with population choice patterns. Ruggeri et al. find in a study of 61 countries that temporal discounting patterns are globally generalizable. Worse financial environments, greater inequality and high inflation are associated with extreme or inconsistent long-term decisions.

  • A Novel Hydroxyapatite/Vitamin B-12 Nanoformula for Treatment of Bone Damage: Preparation, Characterization, and Anti-Arthritic, Anti-Inflammatory, and Antioxidant Activities in Chemically Induced Arthritic Rats
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Pharmaceuticals. - : MDPI. - 1424-8247. ; 16:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The usage of nanomaterials for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatment can improve bioavailability and enable selective targeting. The current study prepares and evaluates the in vivo biological effects of a novel hydroxyapatite/vitamin B-12 nanoformula in Complete Freunds adjuvant-induced arthritis in rats. The synthesized nanoformula was characterized using XRD, FTIR, BET analysis, HERTEM, SEM, particle size, and zeta potential. We synthesized pure HAP NPs with 71.01% loading weight percentages of Vit B12 and 49 mg/g loading capacity. Loading of vitamin B-12 on hydroxyapatite was modeled by Monte Carlo simulation. Anti-arthritic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects of the prepared nanoformula were assessed. Treated arthritic rats showed lower levels of RF and CRP, IL-1 beta, TNF-alpha, IL-17, and ADAMTS-5, but higher IL-4 and TIMP-3 levels. In addition, the prepared nanoformula increased GSH content and GST antioxidant activity while decreasing LPO levels. Furthermore, it reduced the expression of TGF-beta mRNA. Histopathological examinations revealed an improvement in joint injuries through the reduction of inflammatory cell infiltration, cartilage deterioration, and bone damage caused by Complete Freunds adjuvant. These findings indicate that the anti-arthritic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties of the prepared nanoformula could be useful for the development of new anti-arthritic treatments.
