- Vilket pronomen används när man refererar till en zombie? Jag har i ett stort engelskspråkigt material, bestående av filmer, tv-serier och romaner, undersökt om zombien är en he, en she, eller en it – en ’han’, en ’hon’ eller en ’den/det’. Jag upptäckte att pronomenvalet ofta inte beror på zombien i sig, utan på vilken relation personen som skriver eller talar har till varelsen. Jag insåg också att det ligger mycket makt i sådant litet ord som ett pronomen, eftersom det kan avgöra viktiga moraliska frågor, som hur en varelse bör behandlas och om den kan anses mänsklig eller inte.

- Existen innumerables hispanos bilingües que se valen del cambio de código (CdC) con orgullo en su discurso diario y que no se dejan reprimir a pesar de frecuentes posturas negativas por parte de las autoridades, cuyos representantes frecuentemente son hablantes que manejan únicamente una lengua. Nuestro estudio parte de la premisa de que la mera existencia de textos cantados con CdC constituye en sí una prueba de que este fenómeno lingüístico normalmente no ocurre de forma inconsciente en hablantes que sufren de confusión lingüística y que, además, su uso más frecuente no responde a una necesidad de recurrir a la lengua X para aquellos hablantes cuyos conocimientos en la lengua Y son bajos. Analizaremos las funciones pragmáticas y estilísticas que cumple el CdC en la producción musical del grupo bachatero dominicano-americano Aventura. Con la pragmática del CdC nos referimos a “las características de su uso (motivaciones psicológicas de los hablantes, reacciones de los interlocutores […]” (Dubois, 1998), es decir, las funciones sociales que el emisor puede conseguir mediante el uso del CdC en los textos. En cuanto a la estilística se trata del empleo del CdC como una herramienta en la creación de un texto artístico, es decir, los “efectos de estilo” (Dubois, 1998) que el uso específico de los dos códigos aporta a los textos cantados. Entre las funciones pragmáticas se encuentra, por ejemplo, la construcción y la manifestación de la identidad del emisor de los textos cantados. Entre las funciones estilísticas hallamos, por ejemplo, la rima y la estructuración silábica que se forman a partir de un uso específico del CdC. Estudiaremos el CdC como un instrumento innovador y creativo del que se vale el emisor bilingüe para expresar valores artísticos que no se podrían dar con la misma eficacia en un discurso monolingüe.

- El apoyo masivo a Obama por parte de los latinos en las últimas dos elecciones se debió principalmente a las promesas de Obama de impulsar una reforma migratoria que mejoraría la situación para los inmigrantes. El DREAM Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) formaba parte importante de la reforma. Este proyecto de ley ofrecería estatus legal y acceso a la asistencia financiera para jóvenes indocumentados que hayan terminado dos años de estudios en high school o que hayan servido dos años en el ejército. En 2012 el 90% de los votantes latinos estaban a favor del DREAM Act, sin embargo, hasta la fecha, este proyecto de ley no ha sido firmado y existen sentimientos de decepción y traición por parte de los latinos hacia el presidente en cuanto a la política migratoria. Hemos realizado una búsqueda de las palabras “DREAM Act” y “DREAMers” en 100 blogs escritos por latinas, es decir, mujeres de descendencia latinoamericana residentes en Estados Unidos, y hemos encontrado 10 blogs que tocan el tema. Seguidamente hemos analizado cuáles son los temas más recurrentes en cuanto al DREAM Act y hemos podido constatar que, al referirse al DREAM Act, lo más frecuente es expresar desconfianza o desilusión con el presidente Obama, discutir el cambio en la política migratoria al parar las deportaciones de los DREAMers o criticar la ideología anti-inmigrante o anti-latina de los republicanos.

Fantastic Creature Pronominalization – The Use of He/She/It in Reference to Zombies, Vampires, Fairies, and Trolls in Guillermo del Toro’s Literary Work

- In this paper pronominalization is analyzed in reference to the fictional creatures in the literary work of Guillermo del Toro’ in order to study whether the choice of pronoun serves the function of expressing attitudes towards fictional creatures, such as zombies and vampires, in a way that makes the contexts and the characters’ subjective perceptions the dominant factors and consequently puts aside the semantic or grammatical status of the referent. The paper also investigates whether inanimate pronouns (it/its, which), are used in association with detached appraisal, callousness and dehumanization, and whether personal pronouns (he/his, she/her, and who/whom) are used with attachment, closeness and humanization. These two categories of pronouns (personal and inanimate) are normally distinct, i.e., in most contexts they cannot be used interchangeably. The study of the characteristics of fictional creature pronominalization can shed light on how we use pronouns in order to create creatures that exist only in our imagination, and how a variety of different attitudes towards them is expressed through this specific linguistic tool. In relation to del Toro’s zombies and vampires, it can be argued that the pronominalization serves a certain purpose in order to dehumanize them, differentiate the dead vampire/zombies from the living humans, and to point out the before and the after of the transition between life and death. The pronominalization in reference to fairies, although complicated and not completely consistent, shows a clear tendency towards a correlation between animal–like creatures and inanimate pronouns. In regards to del Toro’s trolls, the pronominalization follows a more consistent pattern, which clearly serves the function of expressing different kinds of attitudes towards the creatures such as detached appraisal and dehumanization, on the one hand, and friendship and alliance, on the other.

- In the US, Spanish is a minoritized language and the anti-immigrant movement has become more important and more powerful over the past few decades. We conduct an analysis of appraisal discourse in blogs written by Latinas with the primary aim of identifying central ideas, i.e. specific themes repeated in said posts and related to the subject of discrimination. We use some of Gee's (2011) discourse analysis tools and Martin and Rose's (2007) three- subsystem model of appraisal discourse. When analyzing the first fifteen posts of ten blogs, we find that the subject of discrimination is frequent, although treated differently in different blogs. A detailed analysis of two posts from two different blogs shows that the bloggers have been victims of discrimination and present their personal narratives of this experience.
