  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 25th Annual EurOMA Conference - To Serve, to Produce and to Servitize in the Era of Networks, Big Data and Analytics, Budapest, June 24-26, 2018..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Higher education institutions (HEIs) play a major role in the development of societies. In the last decades, there has been an increasing interest on the commercialisation of knowledge by universities for economic development that lead to the emergence of the term “Entrepreneurial University”. This study aims to report the sustainability efforts of the University of Gävle, Sweden by applying a systematic tool, Graphical Assessment of Sustainability in Universities (GASU). This study highlights sustainability reporting as a way to improve communication practices between universities and stakeholder. The systematic and holistic assessment of HEIs gives insights of collaboration opportunities and by that foster their entrepreneurial journey.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we propose the application of strategic analysis tools to design an educational program. Findings are based on the case of the Master in Innovative Manufacturing Systems (MIMS), a unique training offer to achieve a multidisciplinary expertise in smart manufacturing, in a two-year program simulating the journey of innovation. Building on novel educational paradigms and recent developments in the area of manufacturing, the main goal of the program is to provide the European industry with outstanding experts willing, able, and trained to bring novel solutions that address relevant societal challenges. Special emphasis is placed on real-world contexts and proactive activities, as well as strategies to continuously update the program. We aim to contribute to the educational facet of smart manufacturing.

  • Analysing organisational collaboration practices for sustainability
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 12:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The complex sustainability challenges that society faces require organisations to engage in collaborative partnerships. Stakeholders affect, and are affected by an organisation’s sustainability activities, making it an important element when deciding with whom to collaborate. A large number of studies have focussed on collaboration for sustainability, especially on vertical and dyadic partnerships and collaborative networks, while there is limited research on overarching collaboration activities from the perspective of individual organisations (for example, the Kyosei approach), and even less that includes a stakeholder perspective. The objective of this paper is to analyse with whom individual organisations collaborate and how stakeholders affecting and being affected by sustainability efforts are considered when choosing collaboration partners. A survey was sent to a database of 5216 organisations, from which 271 responses were received. The responses were analysed using non-parametric tests. The results show that organisations are engaged in collaboration activities for sustainability, collaborating mostly with two to three external stakeholders. However, the focus on collaboration for sustainability does not extend to a point that it would lead to a change of organisational practice nor do organisations necessarily consider how stakeholders affect and are affected by their efforts when choosing their collaboration partners. An update to the Kyosei process is proposed, in order to provide guidance on how to strengthen and extend collaborative partnerships for sustainability.

  • Assessing the coverage of sustainability reports: An analysis of sustainability in seaports
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Seaports are major transport hubs of the global economy. Their activities pose negative impacts on the environment, the social, and the economic dimensions of sustainability. Seaports are complex systems with unique characteristics and their sustainability efforts are dependent on the local context, ownership structure, size, and operations. A number of ports have started to assess and report their sustainability efforts; however, there is limited information on the coverage of sustainability issues and the performance of port sustainability activities. This paper assesses the indicator coverage of 24 sustainability reports of seaports from worldwide that follow the GRI guidelines using the Holistic Assessment of Sustainability Performance in Seaports (HASPS) framework. The HASPS was developed by the authors based on a literature review and expands the GRI guidelines with port-specific indicators and interlinking issues. The results show that there is a great variety of coverage of information disclosed regarding all five dimensions of the HASPS (economic, environmental, social, port system, and interlinking issues). Ports that use the GRI guidelines, management systems and certifications, have a good coverage of sustainability issues; coverage however is better in ports that have developed additional port-specific indicators. The paper highlights the importance of a harmonised port sustainability assessment, which can be used by all ports regardless of their unique characteristics.

  • Collaboration for sustainability : A systems-oriented holistic perspective
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Companies have been under increasing pressure to engage with stakeholders to advance their sustainability engagement. Collaboration has been recognised as a key element in such efforts. While the need for collaboration among organisations is increasingly recognised, there is still a need to better understand with whom companies collaborate, and how stakeholders might influence the process. This study analyses how companies collaborate in regards to sustainability and highlights the need to differentiate between influence on stakeholders and importance when establishing collaboration partnerships. This research proposes a collaboration for sustainability model including internal and external stakeholders on the vertical and horizontal level.

  • Continuous and changing stakeholder engagement for organisational sustainability: Proposing the stakeholder engagement flow model
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. - : Wiley. - 1535-3958 .- 1535-3966.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stakeholder engagement has been at the forefront of the organisational sustainability debate, particularly focusing on operational sustainability practices (OSP). While sustainability literature increasingly focuses on sustainable business models (SBMs) and the relationship to OSP, research on stakeholder engagement in SBMs and how this relates to engagement in OSP has been scarce. Based on case study research, this paper contributes to the debate by first providing empirical evidence on engagement practices for implementing SBMs. Second, this paper proposes the stakeholder engagement flow model, highlighting how stakeholder engagement for implementing SBMs need to be adapted in relation to stakeholder engagement in OSP. While stakeholder engagement is often continuous for a broad range of stakeholders, successfully implementing SBMs may also require changing engagement practices both in terms of engagement approach and role of stakeholders. The results advance the theoretical debate on stakeholder engagement for organisational sustainability and support practitioners to rethink and evaluate their stakeholder engagement efforts when aiming to implement OSP and SBMs.

  • Exploring the role of stakeholder interaction for developing organisational sustainability practices and sustainable business models
  • 2021
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Stakeholder interaction has been recognised as one of the main principles to advance organisational sustainability. However, there is only limited knowledge on how organisations interact with their stakeholders to develop sustainability practices from an overarching perspective. There is also only fragmented research on the role of stakeholders when developing a sustainable business model (SBM). The purpose of this thesis is therefore to explore the role of stakeholder interaction for developing organisational sustainability practices and SBMs.Three research questions drive this thesis which compiles three papers based on three individual studies. The first study concentrates on stakeholder interaction as an organisational sustainability practice applying quantitative methods. The second study is a systematic literature review analysing the role of stakeholder interaction to develop SBMs. The third study explores how organisations implemented stakeholder interaction efforts, using qualitative methods. The results reveal that stakeholder interaction implemented as organisational sustainability practices and part of the SBM includes multiple stakeholders and different interaction degrees, potentially leading to new value opportunities and virtuous cycles of sustainable value creation. However, while organisations recognise the importance of stakeholder interaction, most organisations focus on low-to medium interaction degrees related to specific sustainability activities. This may limits the potential of stakeholder interaction for developing organisational sustainability practices and SBMs.This thesis contributes to sustainability, stakeholder and SBM literature by systematically exploring the role of stakeholder interaction, highlighting different degrees and extents practices are implemented in organisations. For practitioners, insights are offered how to foster stakeholder interaction practices and with that move towards organisational sustainability.

  • Moving toward a circular economy in manufacturing organizations : the role of circular stakeholder engagement practices
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Logistics Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0957-4093. ; 34:3, s. 674-698
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe circular economy (CE) approach has been acknowledged as key for manufacturing organizations wishing to overcome sustainability challenges. However, the transition has been slow. Stakeholder engagement is a driver of the transition, but there is limited knowledge on stakeholder engagement practices in a CE context. The purpose of this paper is thus to explore with whom, on what and how organizations engage with stakeholders to implement CE as part of sustainability efforts.Design/methodology/approachThis study is situated at the intersection of CE, stakeholder theory and supply chain literature. A case study with three Swedish manufacturing organizations was conducted to explore stakeholder engagement practices that facilitate the implementation of CE in organizational practice and the supply chain, considering conceptual differences between stakeholder engagement for sustainability and CE.FindingsThis study provides empirical evidence on how manufacturing organizations engage stakeholders to implement CE as part of organizations' sustainability efforts. The study highlights that manufacturing organizations have to move not only from linear to circular resource flows, but also from linear to circular stakeholder engagement. Such engagement can be achieved by extending with whom, expanding on what and leveling up how stakeholders are engaged.Originality/valueThis study provides an enhanced conceptual understanding of stakeholder engagement in the CE context and discusses differences regarding stakeholder engagement based on linear thinking. The study emphasizes the role of circular stakeholder engagement practices for the transition toward CE in manufacturing organizations.

  • Stakeholder interaction for sustainability in seaports : Analysing the implementation and its linkages to overarching interaction efforts
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Business Review. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0955-534X .- 1758-7107. ; 33:5, s. 693-724
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: This study aims to analyse how and to what extent stakeholder interaction for sustainability is implemented in organisations and the linkages to the overarching interaction efforts.Design/methodology/approach: This study was conducted in the context of seaports. To examine interaction activities with stakeholders for sustainability and how they are implemented, the study uses content analysis of sustainability reports.Findings: The results show that the majority of ports recognise the importance of stakeholder interaction to create value and guide organisational sustainability; however, it is implemented to varying levels and degrees, which affects the form and extent of the overarching interaction efforts. The paper proposes four categories of implementing stakeholder interaction, showing the linkages to the number of stakeholder groups involved, sustainability dimensions covered and interaction approaches used.Originality/value: This paper contributes to sustainability, stakeholder and management literature by highlighting different levels of implementation of stakeholder interaction for sustainability and its linkages to overarching efforts that may affect the sustainable development of an organisation. The results of this study provide a better understanding of stakeholder interaction within organisational sustainability approaches and implementation in sustainability-oriented business models. As organisations seek to increase their sustainability performance, these insights may be useful for both academia and practice.
