  • Spontaneously broken time-reversal symmetry in high-temperature superconductors
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nature Physics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1745-2481 .- 1745-2473. ; 11:9, s. 755-760
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conventional superconductors are strong diamagnets that, through the Meissner effect, expel magnetic fields. It would therefore be surprising if a superconducting ground state would support spontaneous magnetics fields. Such time-reversal symmetry-broken states have been proposed for the high-temperature superconductors, but their identification remains experimentally controversial. Here we show a route to a low-temperature superconducting state with broken time-reversal symmetry that may accommodate currently conflicting experiments. This state is characterized by an unusual vortex pattern in the form of a necklace of fractional vortices around the perimeter of the material, where neighbouring vortices have opposite current circulation. This vortex pattern is a result of a spectral rearrangement of current-carrying states near the edges.

  • Charge transport in InAs nanowire Josephson junctions
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B - Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969 .- 1098-0121. ; 89:21, s. 214508-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an extensive experimental and theoretical study of the proximity effect in InAs nanowires connected to superconducting electrodes. We fabricate and investigate devices with suspended gate-controlled nanowires and nonsuspended nanowires, with a broad range of lengths and normal-state resistances. We analyze the main features of the current-voltage characteristics: the Josephson current, excess current, and subgap current as functions of length, temperature, magnetic field, and gate voltage, and compare them with theory. The Josephson critical current for a short-length device, L = 30 nm, exhibits a record high magnitude of 800 nA at low temperature that comes close to the theoretically expected value. The critical current in all other devices is typically reduced compared to the theoretical values. The excess current is consistent with the normal resistance data and agrees well with the theory. The subgap current shows a large number of structures; some of them are identified as subharmonic gap structures generated by multiple Andreev reflection. The other structures, detected in both suspended and nonsuspended devices, have the form of voltage steps at voltages that are independent of either the superconducting gap or length of the wire. By varying the gate voltage in suspended devices, we are able to observe a crossover from typical tunneling transport at large negative gate voltage, with suppressed subgap current and negative excess current, to pronounced proximity junction behavior at large positive gate voltage, with enhanced Josephson current and subgap conductance as well as a large positive excess current.

  • Quantized Conductance and Its Correlation to the Supercurrent in a Nanowire Connected to Superconductors
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 13:8, s. 3614-3617
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report conductance and supercurrent of InAs nano wires coupled to Al-superconducting electrodes with short channel lengths and good Ohmic contacts. The nanowires are suspended 15 nm above a local gate electrode. The charge density in the nanowires can be controlled by a small change in the gate voltage. For large negative gate voltages, the number of conducting channels is reduced gradually, and we observe a stepwise decrease of both conductance and critical current before the conductance vanishes completely.

  • Basic Theory of Electron Transport Through Molecular Contacts
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Handbook of Single-Molecule Electronics. - 9789814463393 ; , s. 31-78
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this chapter, we will introduce a basic theoretical description of coherent electron transport through low-dimensional junctions and molecular devices. The description introduced is based on quantum transport theory using a tight-binding description of molecules and lead materials. We apply this theory in a few worked examples on junctions based on graphene and carbon nanotubes and on molecular-superconducting hybrid junctions.

  • Model Evidence of a Superconducting State with a Full Energy Gap in Small Cuprate Islands
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114 .- 0031-9007. ; 110:19, s. 197001-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate subdominant order parameters stabilizing at low temperatures in nanoscale high-Tc cuprate islands, motivated by the recent observation of a fully gapped state in nanosized YBa2Cu3O7-δ[D. Gustafsson et al., Nature Nanotech. 8, 25 (2013)]. Using complementary quasiclassical and tight-binding Bogoliubov–de Gennes methods, we show on distinctly different properties dependent on the symmetry being dx2-y2 þ is or dx2-y2 þ idxy. We find that a surface-induced dx2-y2 þ is phase creates a global spectroscopic gap which increases with an applied magnetic field, consistent with experimental observation.

  • Disorder-robust phase crystal in high-temperature superconductors stabilized by strong correlations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: npj Quantum Materials. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2397-4648. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The simultaneous interplay of strong electron–electron correlations, topological zero-energy states, and disorder is yet an unexplored territory but of immense interest due to their inevitable presence in many materials. Copper oxide high-temperature superconductors (cuprates) with pair breaking edges host a flat band of topological zero-energy states, making them an ideal playground where strong correlations, topology, and disorder are strongly intertwined. Here we show that this interplay in cuprates generates a fully gapped ‘phase crystal’ state that breaks both translational and time-reversal invariance, characterized by a modulation of the d-wave superconducting phase co-existing with a modulating extended s-wave superconducting order. In contrast to conventional wisdom, we find that this phase crystal state is remarkably robust to omnipresent disorder, but only in the presence of strong correlations, thus giving a clear route to its experimental realization.

  • Charge Qubit Coupled to an Intense Microwave Electromagnetic Field in a Superconducting Nb Device: Evidence for Photon-Assisted Quasiparticle Tunneling
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114 .- 0031-9007. ; 111:13, s. Art. no. 137002-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study a superconducting charge qubit coupled to an intensive electromagnetic field and probe changes in the resonance frequency of the formed dressed states. At large driving strengths, exceeding the qubit energy-level splitting, this reveals the well known Landau-Zener-Stückelberg interference structure of a longitudinally driven two-level system. For even stronger drives, we observe a significant change in the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg pattern and contrast. We attribute this to photon-assisted quasiparticle tunneling in the qubit. This results in the recovery of the qubit parity, eliminating effects of quasiparticle poisoning, and leads to an enhanced interferometric response. The interference pattern becomes robust to quasiparticle poisoning and has a good potential for accurate charge sensing.

  • Large Thermoelectric Effects and Inelastic Scattering in Unconventional Superconductors
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. ; 850, s. 567-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The thermoelectric coefficient eta(T) in unconventional superconductors is enhanced below Tc by intermediate strength impurity scattering that is intrinsically particle-hole asymmetric. We compute eta(T) for a strong-coupling d-wave superconductor and investigate the effects of inelastic scattering originating from electron-boson interactions. We show that eta(T) is severely suppressed at temperatures just below Tc by a particle-hole symmetric inelastic scattering rate. At lower temperatures inelastic scattering is frozen out and eta(T) recovers and regains its large amplitude. In the limit T->0, we have eta(T) ~ eta_0 T + O[T^3] , where the slope eta_0 contains information about the Drude plasma frequency, the details of impurity scattering, and the change in effective mass by electron-boson interactions. In this limit eta(T) can be used as a probe, complementary to the universal heat and charge conductivities, in investigations of the nature of nodal quasiparticles.

  • Nonlinear magnetic field dependence of the conductance in d-wave NIS tunnel junctions.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. ; 70:1, s. 012503-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ab-plane normal-metal/insulator/superconductor-tunnelling conductance in d-wave superconductors shows a zero-bias conductance peak which is predicted to split in a magnetic field. In a pure d-wave superconductor the splitting is linear for fields small on the scale of the thermodynamic critical field. The field dependence is shown to be nonlinear, even at low fields, in the vicinity of a surface phase transition into a local time-reversal symmetry breaking state. The field evolution of the conductance is sensitive to temperature, doping, and the symmetry of the subdominant pairing channel.
