  • Algae blooms and their consequences on camping tourism on Öland, Sweden
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In Sweden camping tourism holds the position as one of the largest niches within the tourism accommodation sector. The camping sector represents more than 17 million or 35% of commercial overnight stays in total. On the island of Öland which is located in Kalmar county, and in Kalmar county itself, the camping sector represents more than 1.75 million or 65% of the annual overnight stays which positions Kalmar and Öland as the second largest camping region in Sweden. However, tourism businesses, and especially island tourism systems, can be vulnerable to shifting environmental conditions. In recent years, the media has highlighted the issue of harmful algae blooms frequently affecting coastlines in the Baltic Sea. Based on structured interviews, this article investigates the perceptions of campground managers and camping tourists on Öland have of the impact of algae blooms on tourism. The results show that both among campground managers and visitors, algae blooms are perceived as an environmental concern that might affect tourism in negative ways.

  • Mitigating water shortage impacts : water consumption and sectoral adaptations among tourism and farming enterprises in Öland, South East Sweden
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Tourism implications and dilemmas, 24-26 September 2018. ; , s. 126-126
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tourism development has, for many areas, become an important means to mitigate impacts from rural restructuring and out migration. At the same time, tourism is an additional stress factor on local infrastructures, environments and water resources. The peak season for both farming and coastal tourism often coincide with the dry summer season. As a result, since both farming and tourism have a high demand for freshwater consumption, water scarcity and related issues has become an increasingly pressing matter (Gössling 2001; Gössling Et al, 2012; Cole 2014). This is especially evident for many coastal and island destinations where freshwater demand and water consumption accelerate. The increasing demand is in part a result of increasing volumes of incoming tourists, cattle livestock changes as well as the 20th century wetland reductions to feed the need of larger areas of farmland. The capacity to cope with low amounts of precipitation for periods of continuous years becomes increasingly challenging. This paper examines the awareness of water scarcity among tourism and farming businesses in Öland and Gotland, as well as measures taken to mitigate of impacts and freshwater use. Focus group interviews as well as surveys have been conducted among tourism and farming businesses and stakeholders in Öland and Gotland. The results show significant differences between tourism- and farming stakeholders regarding perception of causes and effects of water scarcity. Variation in responses is also seen in water management issues as well as matters of responsibility and solutions. There is also a difference between tourism- and farming businesses regarding mitigation and the actions and measures taken to secure freshwater their access or reduce freshwater abstraction.

  • Mitigation of water shortage impacts among tourism and farming companies on the islands of Öland and Gotland, Sweden
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Environment, Development and Sustainability. - : Springer. - 1387-585X .- 1573-2975. ; 26, s. 7509-7527
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainable development requires clean water. In Sweden, water supply has historically been good, but a changed climate may alter that situation. Islands such as oland and Gotland, which already have a strained water situation due to their location and bedrock, can be useful case studies for understanding how industries adapt and overcome obstacles in changing behaviour to be more sustainable. Focus groups and a postal questionnaire were conducted to study the water shortage mitigations of the tourism and agriculture industries. The results indicated four salient steps for these industries: awareness/knowledge, responsibility, behaviour and mitigation measures. While awareness was high among all respondents, the level of knowledge varied. Both the tourism and agriculture industries acknowledged their own responsibility but primarily placed the responsibility on each other and on other actors. All respondents had ideas about what behaviours needed to be changed in others, but not as much about their own behaviours, which is a natural consequence of the transfer of responsibility. Finally, there were many ideas for mitigation measures with the agricultural industry focusing on traditional approaches such as irrigation ponds and collecting rainwater, and the tourism industry having more innovative ideas such as re-circulating water and behaviour changes but had not progressed as far in their implementation. This study has shown that industries have different prerequisites and that providing them with tools to help them use preventive measures could speed up the transition to a more sustainable future.

  • Places on Öland : billlboards in the geography of showing!
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Knowledge about the impacts and consequences of restructuring for rural areas is important in order to sustain and develop the local labor market. Tourism has become an alternative development for many rural areas and in the effort to attract visitors and investors, local places are commodified. The distinctiveness of local places has an essential role to play in tourism development, marketing and consumption. In traditional tourism destinations with a rural location, tourism already has a strong position in the local livelihood system. However, restructuring and increasing competition is challenging for traditional destinations and many are struggling to rejuvenate their destination image. The uniqueness of distinct places becomes raw material for this struggle and the local nature, culture, art and food are used to promote the destinations and to revitalize tourism places. The results of this article show that in these processes, the local entrepreneurs and tourism enterprises have an important role to play.

  • Revitalizing Tourism Places
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Developing tourism – Sustaining regions. - 9789174595222 ; , s. 54-54
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Tourism has in many ways become the anchor ring of rural places to defend their local community in response to rural restructuring. When the employment capacity of traditional branches fades and the rural labour markets diminish, tourism becomes the rural totem in which people increasingly place their hope. Traditional tourism places have faced difficulties due to increasing competition and shifting tourism demand as well as impacts from climate and environmental change. Therefore, many rural places struggle to reinvent and reimage themselves to become competitive tourism destinations. This paper examine perceived impacts of restructuring and environmental change on tourism in a rural and peripheral seaside destination. This is analyzed for the case of the island Öland in Kalmar County, Southeast Sweden. Central themes are; changing labour markets, reinvention of tourism and tourism places, tourism business and algae blooms.

  • 2014

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tourism has become an important sector for many rural areas in Sweden. For the island Öland tourism is an important economic niche and along with agriculture, the backbone of the local economy. Island tourism systems can however, be vulnerable to environmental change. Algae blooms have repeatedly affected Baltic Sea coastlines in recent years, and destination planners in Öland reported losses of 27 million Euros for the season in 2005 alone. This article investigates related impacts on tourist decisions within the camping sector, through interrelationships of algaeblooms, weather conditions, supply of camping facilities and distance to attractions outside the camping area. It goes on to evaluate how important camping visitors state these different factors to be for their choice of destination. The method used in this article is a stated preference where the respondents are requested to evaluate a number of hypothetical alternatives. The results show that camping is an important niche within Swedish summer tourism. However, high reliance on sea, sun and sand as the primary tourism product might be challenged by weather extremes, precipitation and biotic change in the future. Proactive strategies and adaptation strategies are important steps to take in order to mitigate potential negative impacts for the future.
