  • Produktivitetsmätningar som förbättringsverktyg : en kartläggning av arbetsproduktivitetsmätningar på svenska byggarbetsplatser
  • 2008
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Swedish construction industry has over the last few years been criticized for its high increase of production costs, poor quality and low productivity. Productivity improvements within the Swedish construction industries are lower than that of other comparable industries. Some researcher argue that two thirds of production activities in the construction industry do not produce value and causes low productivity improvement. The purpose of this research was to investigate types of labour performance in order to improve the production process in the Swedish construction industry. The study focused on measuring labour productivity as labour wages constitute a large part of the production cost.Five benchmarking studies were performed within companies and organisations outside of the traditional Swedish construction industry to examine their work process as far as improving labour productivity is concerned. Later a survey was performed among 74 respondents in five Swedish construction companies to investigate their ways of using labour productivity measurements. Finally five senior executive officials were interviewed to find out their point of view in the field of developing productivity in their companies. The result shows that measurement of labour productivity has an important role within the Swedish construction companies. The key factors to succeed in productivity improvement are the measurement of labour productivity and the follow-up of the results obtained. It is important that company management conveys the importance of improving productivity to all levels in the company.

  • The impact of labour productivity on the Swedish construction industries
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 4th Nordic Conference on Construction Economics and Organisation. - Luleå : Luleå tekniska universitet. ; , s. 341-351
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There have been debates concerning what can be done about the current low labour productivity in the Swedish construction industries. High production cost in the construction industries has been a burning issue for a long time. On the other hand, process industries and organisations have taken the advantage of labour productivity measurement to reduce their production cost and eliminate non value-added activities. The purpose of this paper is to examine, why and how the process industries and organisations have taken action to measure labour productivity and to suggest ways of improving labour productivity. Case studies have been performed for six different companies and organisations, and these are discussed. The results show that increases in global competition have led industries and organisations to educe production cost by improving labour productivity. To improve the construction project process, beside profit maximization, labour productivity measurement is essential. Furthermore, there is a need for measuring labour productivity in order to reduce production cost.

  • Measurement of waste and productivity in relation to lean thinking
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 15th annual conference of the International Group for Lean Construction. - East Lansing : Michigan State University Press. ; , s. 67-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the Swedish construction sector there have been debates concerning what can be done about the current low productivity and the high levels of wastes. During the last few years it has become more common to utilize principles from lean construction as a way to enhance the problems concerning the levels of productivity and waste. The aim of this paper is to do a literature review on measurement of waste and productivity. Terms waste and productivity will be compared and discussed in relation to lean construction. Furthermore this paper will highlight the use of lean philosophy to reduce waste and improve productivity in the Swedish construction industries. The study shows that the term ‘waste’ is more closely related to lean thinking than productivity is, but both terms are according to our analysis nonetheless important when striving for cost reductions. Furthermore there is a need of changing in the way of thinking in order to create a value added activities that can cut down production cost in the Swedish construction industries.
