  • Baltic Sea History : New perspectives on the history of the Baltic Sea Region: A Sourcebook
  • 2019
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • When you talk about history in the Baltic Sea Region, it will not take long before sensitive issues come up. It may often be hard to find a common ground. In this book, researchers and educators from seven countries present 19 case studies of conflicting views and interpretations of history, together with a selection of sources. The book should be useful for teachers, guides, and others who present history to a larger audience, as well as to all who are interested in the History of the Baltic Sea Region.Chronologically, the case studies range from the perception of Vikings, and the Christianization of the Eastern Baltic, to the appearance of central parts of present-day Tallinn and Riga, marked by the presence of some heavily symbolic buildings and monuments.

  • Ad portum non precogitatum : The Homecoming of the Birgitta Relics to Sweden (1374)
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Analecta Bollandiana. - 0003-2468. ; 129:1, s. 81-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In spite of her long stay in Italy, Saint Birgitta of Sweden always regarded Sweden as her homeland and wanted to be buried in Vadstena monastery, then under construction. Members of the Bridgettine circle in Rome carried her mortal remains from Italy to Sweden, leaving Rome in December, 1373 and arriving in Vadstena in July, 1374. According to a contemporary miracle tale, as the party crossed the Baltic doubts emerged regarding which port to anchor in as they learned of war raging in Sweden. This article contributes to an ongoing scholarly discussion concerning the possibilities of identifying this port. The final part of the article discusses which saint is meant by “Saint Brita” cited as patron saint of a chapel at Sikavarp port on Öland in a sixteenth-century source.

  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Kalmar län: Årsbok för kulturhistoria och hembygdsvård. - 0451-2715. ; 81, s. 29-36

    • Children and Young People in Medieval Miracle Tales. In Swedish.Miracle tales are a rewarding source material for the study of the conditions of children and young people in the Middle Ages. Other sources originate mainly from the elites of medieval society, whose views on child rearing and childhood were rather extreme. Miracle tales on the other hand were told by people from all segments of society and illustrate the life of medieval children in a great variety of situations of leisure and work. However, all miracle tales are not equally well suited for the use of social history. It is especially the miracle collections of the later Middle Ages–to which the Swedish miracle collections belong–that provide such material. Examples are given in the text.

  • Brott eller kontinuitet? : År 1523 i Sveriges historia
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sverige 1523. - Stockholm : Riksarkivet. - 9789187491412 ; , s. 14-37
  • Bokkapitel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Rupture or Continuity? The year 1523 in the history of Sweden [in Swedish]In 1523, Gustav Eriksson of the noble family Vasa was elected king of Sweden. The year 2023 therefore marks a jubilee. However, this election has exaggeratedly been called the birthday of Sweden in numerous outlets. But in 1523, Sweden had already a long history, including personalities like King Eric the Holy, King Magnus Ladulås, and the prophetess St Birgitta. The election in 1523 was an episode in the history of Sweden, not its beginning. This book chapter discusses when Sweden may be discerned as a kingdom within defined borders, and how elements of a state fostering the rule of law are visible in thirteenth and fourteenth century legislation. The erroneous idea that Sweden was born in 1523 'has to do with a certain interpretation of the Kalmar Union. A large part of the chapter is therefore focused on the union period and some of the documents that were produced then. Three kingdoms came together to form the Kalmar Union, each with its own laws and institutions. It was not an empire, nor a foreign rule of Sweden. The time in power of King Gustav (Gustavus) Vasa was indeed a period of significant change, not least in the domains of religion a forms of government, but there was also a large part of continuity, which must not be forgotten.

  • Demons in the miracula
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Medieval Spirituality in Scandinavia and Europe. - Odense : Odense University Press. - 8778385881 ; , s. 275-284
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The mention of devils and demons in Swedish miracle tales of the Late Middle Ages is not unusual, but the frequency varies greatly from collection to collection. The occurrences may be grouped according to the role the devils or the demons play in the tales. One group of accounts uses the devil as an explanation for illness. Another group is similar to the first-mentioned, but is more detailed in its description of the circumstances surrounding the possession. The third group, which is the most interesting category for our purposes, accounts in detail for the devil's behaviour or the visions of the devil the afflicted person had, while the fourth group speaks about the devil as a tempter.
