  • The database of the PREDICTS (Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems) project
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Ecology and Evolution. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 2045-7758. ; 7:1, s. 145-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The PREDICTS project-Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (www.predicts.org.uk)-has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use. We have used this evidence base to develop global and regional statistical models of how local biodiversity responds to these measures. We describe and make freely available this 2016 release of the database, containing more than 3.2 million records sampled at over 26,000 locations and representing over 47,000 species. We outline how the database can help in answering a range of questions in ecology and conservation biology. To our knowledge, this is the largest and most geographically and taxonomically representative database of spatial comparisons of biodiversity that has been collated to date; it will be useful to researchers and international efforts wishing to model and understand the global status of biodiversity.

  • Multiproxy record of Holocene paleoenvironmental change, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology. - 0031-0182. ; 286:1-2, s. 1-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We interpret Holocene environmental conditions in a subantarctic high Andean valley from palynological and diatom analysis, peat stratigraphy, and local geomorphology. The multiproxy data from Las Cotorras mire (54° 41′ 13″ S; 68° 02′ 51″ W; 420 m a.s.l.) indicate the development of a soligenous mire, as a result of a fine grained tephra layer deposition over the mineral soils sometime prior to 8000 cal yr BP. The paleoecological conditions in the mire after 8000 cal yr BP show a rapid succession from a limnic to a telmatic stage as the mire is colonized by sedges (Cyperaceae) and herbaceous communities. The upland vegetation changed from cushion and shrub heaths to an expansion of Nothofagus forest at high altitudes after 6500 cal yr BP. The peat is interbedded with clastic sediment that originates from mass wasting events or floods. These depositional changes affected the mire ecosystem water-table level and nutrient status (oligotrophic and/or eutrophic conditions). Maxima in total pollen influx at about 2800, 1100 and 700 cal yr BP coincide with heightened mineral flux, and these changes are related to precipitation and slope processes. The major vegetational change registered in the pollen record is the decline of Nothofagus pollen after 1000 cal yr BP, which reaches a minimum between ca. 680 and 300 cal yr BP. This minimum was likely caused by cool, wet conditions that coincided with the Little Ice Age (LIA) in the Southern Hemisphere. Our results indicate the sensitivity of subantarctic Nothofagus forest and mire ecosystems to changes during the Holocene.

  • Depressive symptoms associated with concerns about falling in Parkinson's disease
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Brain and Behavior. - : Wiley. - 2162-3279. ; 6:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Concerns about falling, a construct related to fear of falling, is increased in people with Parkinson's disease (PD) and is recognized as a barrier for exercise, negatively affecting health-related quality of life and participation. Aim: To investigate modifiable factors associated with concerns about falling in elderly with mild-to-moderate PD. Methods: Eighty-nine elderly (39 females, mean age 73 years) with mild-to-moderate PD were recruited. Concerns about falling were assessed with the Falls Efficacy Scale-international, that is, the dependent variable in multiple linear regression analysis. Independent variables included both motor (e.g., objective measures of physical activity and gait) and nonmotor aspects such as depressive symptoms. Results: A model with three significant independent variables explained 33% of the variance in concerns about falling. According to the standardized regression coefficients (β), the strongest contributing factor was depressive symptoms (0.40), followed by balance performance (−0.25), and use of mobility devices (0.24). Conclusions: The findings imply that factors associated with concerns about falling are a multifactorial phenomenon. For its management in elderly with mild-to-moderate PD, one should consider depressive symptoms, balance deficits, and mobility devices.

  • Compositional tuning of gas-phase synthesized Pd–Cu nanoparticles
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nanoscale Advances. - 2516-0230. ; 5:22, s. 6069-6077
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bimetallic nanoparticles have gained significant attention in catalysis as potential alternatives to expensive catalysts based on noble metals. In this study, we investigate the compositional tuning of Pd–Cu bimetallic nanoparticles using a physical synthesis method called spark ablation. By utilizing pure and alloyed electrodes in different configurations, we demonstrate the ability to tailor the chemical composition of nanoparticles within the range of approximately 80 : 20 at% to 40 : 60 at% (Pd : Cu), measured using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and transmission electron microscopy energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (TEM-EDXS). Time-resolved XRF measurements revealed a shift in composition throughout the ablation process, potentially influenced by material transfer between electrodes. Powder X-ray diffraction confirmed the predominantly fcc phase of the nanoparticles while high-resolution TEM and scanning TEM-EDXS confirmed the mixing of Pd and Cu within individual nanoparticles. X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopy were used to analyze the outermost atomic layers of the nanoparticles, which is highly important for catalytic applications. Such comprehensive analyses offer insights into the formation and structure of bimetallic nanoparticles and pave the way for the development of efficient and affordable catalysts for various applications.

  • Emissions and exposures of graphene nanomaterials, titanium dioxide nanofibers, and nanoparticles during down-stream industrial handling
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1559-064X .- 1559-0631. ; 31:4, s. 736-752
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today, engineered nanomaterials are frequently used. Nanosized titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been extensively used for many years and graphene is one type of emerging nanomaterial. Occupational airborne exposures to engineered nanomaterials are important to ensure safe workplaces and to extend the information needed for complete risk assessments. The main aim of this study was to characterize workplace emissions and exposure of graphene nanoplatelets, graphene oxide, TiO2 nanofibers (NFs) and nanoparticles (NPs) during down-stream industrial handling. Surface contaminations were also investigated to assess the potential for secondary inhalation exposures. In addition, a range of different sampling and aerosol monitoring methods were used and evaluated. The results showed that powder handling, regardless of handling graphene nanoplatelets, graphene oxide, TiO2 NFs, or NPs, contributes to the highest particle emissions and exposures. However, the exposure levels were below suggested occupational exposure limits. It was also shown that a range of different methods can be used to selectively detect and quantify nanomaterials both in the air and as surface contaminations. However, to be able to make an accurate determination of which nanomaterial that has been emitted a combination of different methods, both offline and online, must be used.
