The main question posed in this dissertation is: How does music relate to what is not music? Through an artistic inquiry, where a reflexive movement between the different parts produces the method used, the dissertation addresses the act of composing with particular focus on how music moves and how relations in music change. Results are also in motion, and traces – lines – move, change direction, and connect the music with what is not music. This inquiry embraces the following five themes: movement, identity, time, memory and space – which all relate to each other, and which, through composition, change, transform and reshape meaning as well as expression. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the changes that arise as a result of the relationships that are activated between music and what is not music, since an understanding of how these relationships work enables opportunities for the composition of new music.

  • Sound Notation : The visual representation of sound for composition and analysis

    • This compilation thesis details steps taken to develop and evaluate a new Sound Notation system for composition, analysis, and transcription with the capacity to describe all types of sound. Ideas from electroacoustic music analysis are combined with traditional notation to form a hybrid system. In this notation, all symbols are related to physical qualities in the sound, so that a person or a computer can identify the symbols from their sonification or musical interpretation.Pierre Schaeffer early identified musique concrète's lack of music theory and music vocabulary as a major problem for its integration with music theory and musicology. Schaeffer, Denis Smalley, and later Lasse Thoresen would go a long way to provide the genre of electroacoustic music with classification, terminology, and graphical symbols for the benefit of its study. But if we are to think of music as a language, it becomes apparent that the lack of a shared inter-subjective notation system is a problem. Such a notation system would provide sound-based music with possibilities that were previously only afforded music based on pitch structures. This includes transcriptions and re-interpretations of musical works, notation-based ear-training and (computer-aided) composition.

  • Performing Perfectly : Presentations of Childhood in Knutby Filadelfia Before and After the Dissolution of the Congregation

    • The Knutby Filadelfia Congregation, founded in 1921, started out as a Pentecostal congregation. It has, however, been considered a deviant and semi-isolated new religious movement ever since it became known to the public after a murder took place within its community in 2004. The massive media attention it received revealed the presence of a charismatic leader within the group, and the development of a new theology in which the charismatic leader was considered to be the Bride of Christ. After 2004, the congregation reinforced its boundaries with society, and then suddenly began to dissolve in 2016. This study discusses the development of totalistic features within the congregation from the perspective of sociologist Erving Goffman; it highlights the simultaneous presence of in-group as well as out-group social stigma; and it explores the conflicting presentations of childhood in the congregation in performances from before and after the dissolution of the congregation.The results are based on empirical material from 25 semi-structured interviews with children and youth aged 7–25, 2 focus group interviews with youths, and 24 days of participant observations. Goffman’s theoretical framework, including the key concepts total institutions, stigma, and presentations, is used together with an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach in order to explore the experiences of childhoods as presented by children and youth within the congregation.The findings suggest that their individual understandings of and responses to the presence of a charismatic authority, as well as the consequences of such authorities on parent–child relations, are individual. The Pre-Narratives focus on stigmatisation from society, while the Post-Narratives include stigma within the congregation in the form of social exclusion. The study further indicates that the presentations of childhoods given prior to and after the dissolution of the congregation, the so-called Pre- and Post-Narratives, differ due to changing dramaturgical loyalties, although they should both be considered front-stage activity in Goffman’s terms.

  • Composing The Performance : An Exploration Of Musical Composition As A Dramaturgical Strategy In Contemporary Intermedial Theatre

    • This thesis explores musical composition in the context of contemporary theatre. It suggests methods where compositional thinking – broadly understood – can be used as a dramaturgical device in the creation of theatre performances. Such musicalization of theatre provides new methods for an artistic practice and questions traditional artistic hierarchies and working structures.   The investigation departs from a process of transference of radiophonic art to stage performances. From this a series of interdisciplinary works in the intersection between concert, theatre performance, radio play and music theatre has been created, each with different approaches to the roles and functions of musical composition. Through these works the creative processes and methods are examined and analysed.   The notion of vertical dramaturgy and polyphony in theatre contexts is discussed and demonstrated, which pinpoints the significance of interaction between the elements of a performance. The interplay between dramatic writing, acting methods and musical composition is under scrutiny, as is the way in which visual elements as video, light and scenography are integrated into polyphonic theatre experiences. Transformation is an essential compositional and dramaturgical tool as it allows a performance to move seamlessly between different art forms, continuously creating new relationships.   Through the research a model for interdisciplinary, collaborative work in performing arts emerges. The concepts of Shared space and Shared time are introduced and enable a collective ‘thinking-through-practice’ and expansion of the artistic roles. This joint arena of space and time opens up new connections, interactions and mutual exchanges between artists and art forms.   The outcome provides a range of artistic methods in the field of contemporary intermedial theatre where musical composition is one of the dramaturgical devices for composing the performances.

    • This paper describes the development of three digital sound prototypes based on three sounding objects selected from those in use at the Swedish Radio Sound Studio. Knowledge about historical and current creative practice was gathered through an in-depth interview with the Swedish Radio sound engineer and sound maker Michael Johansson and the observation of his Foley practice. A design workshop was carried out with music composers and interaction designers to ideate how these historical sound design concepts could be developed in the digital domain. On the basis of the workshop results, we built three prototypes that were exhibited at Tekniska Museet in Stockholm where we gathered feedback from 126 people. Finally, we discuss what we have learnt from utilising an approach rooted in historical creative practice, emphasizing benefits for contemporary digital sound design.

    • This paper describes initial research conducted in The Radio Sound Studio Project. The aim of the project is to develop novel sound design tools by digitally model historical sound effects, found in the radio drama studio, utilising methods from sound computing, ethnography, and design. These novel sound tools will address both artistic sound practices as well as more utilitarian sonic interaction designs for new objects. The project also provides a tangible approach to connecting new sound design developments with historical literature and practice, and create new opportunities for radio, TV and Foley studios. This paper focuses on the process of selection of the sounding objects to be modelled, which was based on an in-depth interview with Sveriges Radio’s sound engineer and sound maker Michael Johansson as well as observations of his Foley practice. It also describes the initial modelling of one of these objects, and plans for future work.
