  • The search for muon neutrinos from northern hemisphere gamma-ray bursts with AMANDA

    • We present the results of the analysis of neutrino observations by the Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA) correlated with photon observations of more than 400 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the northern hemisphere from 1997 to 2003. During this time period, AMANDA's effective collection area for muon neutrinos was larger than that of any other existing detector. After the application of various selection criteria to our data, we expect similar to 1 neutrino event and <2 background events. Based on our observations of zero events during and immediately prior to the GRBs in the data set, we set the most stringent upper limit on muon neutrino emission correlated with GRBs. Assuming a Waxman-Bahcall spectrum and incorporating all systematic uncertainties, our flux upper limit has a normalization at 1 PeV of E-2 Phi(nu) <= 6.3 x 10(-9) GeV cm(-2) s(-1) sr(-1), with 90% of the events expected within the energy range of similar to 10 TeV to similar to 3 PeV. The impact of this limit on several theoretical models of GRBs is discussed, as well as the future potential for detection of GRBs by next-generation neutrino telescopes. Finally, we briefly describe several modifications to this analysis in order to apply it to other types of transient point sources.

    • This paper presents the panel discussion from the 'Meet the Editor' symposium held at the 4th World Congress of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine in Seoul in June 2007. It includes contributions by four Editors of international journals in rehabilitation. Some of the topics discussed are of a general nature, but will provide useful guidance for the more junior scientific author. Some specific information about the four journals is also presented. Topics discussed include the reasons for publishing in peer review journals, important considerations in submitting a manuscript, the peer review process, the effect of electronic publishing, which leads to shorter publication times and the opportunity to preview papers, and the trend towards more open access to journals. The discussion concludes that the field of physical and rehabilitation medicine will continue to expand, with an audience with a broader range of scientific and clinical interests. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) may be increasingly used as a framework in reporting. New journals may be started, particularly in regions of the world other than Europe and the USA, despite the fact that journals currently published in these regions are distributed worldwide.

  • Relationship between force and size in human single muscle fibres

    • When the contractile properties of single muscle fibres are studied, force is typically normalized by fibre cross-sectional area and expressed as specific force. We studied a set of 2725 chemically skinned human single muscle fibres from 119 healthy adults to determine whether specific force is the optimal way to express the relationship between single-fibre force and size. A linear mixed effects model was used to estimate the slope and slope variability among individuals of log-log plots of force and diameter. For type I fibres, the slope estimate was 0.99 (95% confidence interval 0.36-1.62), and for type IIa fibres it was 0.94 (95% confidence interval 0.77-1.11), indicating that force is proportional to fibre diameter, rather than to cross-sectional area. If force were proportional to cross-sectional area, the slope estimate would be 2.0. In future studies using the chemically skinned single fibre preparation, force may be normalized to fibre diameter rather than cross-sectional area. We propose that a new term, 'normalized force', be used for this variable, with units of newtons per metre. We demonstrate using our data set that when populations of single fibres are compared with one another, the determination of whether the size and force relationship is the same or different is dependent upon the method used to account for fibre size (i.e. specific force versus 'normalized force').

  • Single skeletal muscle fiber elastic and contractile characteristics in young and older men

    • The current investigation was designed to: (a) assess the impact of aging on elastic characteristics of single skeletal muscle fibers from young (N = 6) and older men (N = 6); and (b) correlate the potential changes, with the fiber contractile properties. Chemically skinned single muscle fibers (n = 235) from vastus lateralis muscle were maximally activated. Maximal force and cross-sectional area were measured, and specific force calculated. The slack test was used to measure maximal unloaded shortening velocity. A quick release of 0.15% of fiber length was applied to determine instantaneous stiffness. The myosin heavy chain isoform composition of each single fiber was determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Aging induces changes in both fiber elasticity (i.e., increased instantaneous stiffness) and contractility (i.e., reduced specific force and unloaded shortening velocity) in type I and IIa fibers. However, the changes in fiber stiffness may not directly influence contractile characteristics alterations.
