  • Parkinsonian features in hereditary diffuse leukoencephalopathy with spheroids (HDLS) and CSF1R mutations
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Parkinsonism & Related Disorders. - : Elsevier BV. - 1353-8020. ; 19:10, s. 869-877
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Atypical Parkinsonism associated with white matter pathology has been described in cerebrovascular diseases, mitochondrial cytopathies, osmotic demyelinating disorders, leukoencephalopathies leukodystrophies, and others. Hereditary diffuse leukoencephalopathy with spheroids (HDLS) is an autosomal dominant disorder with symptomatic onset in midlife and death within a few years after symptom onset. Neuroimaging reveals cerebral white matter lesions that are pathologically characterized by noninflammatory myelin loss, reactive astrocytosis, and axonal spheroids. Most cases are caused by mutations in the colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R) gene. We studied neuropathologically verified HDLS patients with CSF1R mutations to assess parkinsonian features. Ten families were evaluated with 16 affected individuals. During the course of the illness, all patients had at least some degree of bradykinesia. Fifteen patients had postural instability, and seven had rigidity. Two patients initially presented with parkinsonian gait and asymmetrical bradykinesia. These two patients and two others exhibited bradykinesia, rigidity, postural instability, and tremor (two with resting) early in the course of the illness. Levodopa/carbidopa therapy in these four patients provided no benefit, and the remaining 12 patients were not treated. The mean age of onset for all patients was about 45 years (range, 18-71) and the mean disease duration was approximately six years (range, 3-11). We also reviewed HDLS patients published prior to the CSF1R discovery for the presence of parkinsonian features. Out of 50 patients, 37 had gait impairments, 8 rigidity, 7 bradykinesia, and 5 resting tremor. Our report emphasizes the presence of atypical Parkinsonism in HDLS due to CSF1R mutations.

  • The WASA-FRS project at GSI and its perspective
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B. - : Elsevier. - 0168-583X .- 1872-9584. ; 542, s. 22-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel technique to study bound states of exotic hadrons in subatomic nuclei, such as hypernuclei and mesic nuclei, has been developed by employing the Fragment Separator FRS and the WASA central detector at GSI. Two experiments, S447 for studying light hypernuclei, especially hypertriton and a Ann bound state, and S490 for searching for ri' mesic-nuclei, were recently performed. Data analyses are currently in progress, and light charged particles such as protons and x & PLUSMN; are clearly observed and identified in the both experiments. For S447, light nuclear fragments that can also be residual nuclei from decays of hypernuclei of interests have been analysed by the FRS, and a momentum resolution, Ap/p, of 5 x 10-4 has been achieved. Further data analyses are to be completed. The WASA-FRS project will be continued and extended with the FRS at FAIR Phase 0, and upgrading of the WASA magnet and detectors is currently in progress. Furthermore, construction of a larger detector system with the Super-FRS at FAIR Phase 1 is also under consideration.

  • WASA-FRS EXPERIMENTS IN FAIR PHASE-0 AT GSI
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACTA PHYSICA POLONICA B PROCEEDINGS SUPPLEMENT. - : Jagiellonian University.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have developed a new and unique experimental setup integrating the central part of the Wide Angle Shower Apparatus (WASA) into the Fragment Separator (FRS) at GSI. This combination opens up possibilities of new experiments with high-resolution spectroscopy at forward 0 and measurements of light decay particles with nearly full solid-angle acceptance in coincidence. The first series of the WASA-FRS experiments have been successfully carried out in 2022. The developed experimental setup and two physics experiments performed in 2022 including the status of the preliminary data analysis are introduced.

  • Search for η'-mesic nuclei in 12C(p, dp) reaction with the WASA detector at GSI-FRS
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nuovo cimento della societa italiana de fisica. C, Geophysics and space physics. - : Società Italiana di Fisica. - 1124-1896 .- 1826-9885. ; 47:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We conducted an experimental search for η′-mesic nuclei, bound systems of an η′ meson and a nucleus, in 12C(p, dp) reactions. We measured the missing mass in the (p, d) reaction to obtain the mass spectrum of the reaction product near the η′ emission threshold. Forward-emitted deuterons were momentum-analyzed in the FRS of GSI. We installed a nearly 4π detector WASA near the 12C target to effectively select formation and decay of the η′-mesic nuclei. We are presently finalizing the analysis.

  • Spectroscopic study of the Λ(1405) resonance via the d (K-, n) reaction at J-PARC
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 13th International Conference on Hypernuclear and Strange Particle Physics, HYP 2018. - : AIP Publishing. - 9780735418721 ; 2130
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structure of the Λ(1405) hyperon is an important and long-standing issue related to the K̄-nucleus interaction. The J-PARC E31 experiment has been performed to investigate the Λ(1405) spectrum shape. Because it is hard to form the Λ(1405) directly by a K̄N scattering in free space, E31 uses the d(K-, n) reaction with an incident kaon momentum of 1 GeV/c. We will identify three final states - ς-π+, ς+π-, ς0π0-so that the isospin structure of hyperon resonance states produced can be decomposed. The first physics run of the E31 experiment was performed in 2016. To enhance the statistics of the data set, we have performed the second physics run in the beginning of 2018. During the second run of E31, around 3.9×1010 kaons impacted on the deuteron target.

  • Multiple system atrophy and apolipoprotein E
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Movement Disorders. - : Wiley. - 0885-3185 .- 1531-8257. ; 33:4, s. 647-650
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Dysregulation of the specialized lipid metabolism involved in myelin synthesis and maintenance by oligodendrocytes has been associated with the unique neuropathology of MSA. We hypothesized that apolipoprotein E, which is associated with neurodegeneration, may also play a role in the pathogenesis of MSA. Objective: This study evaluated genetic associations of Apolipoprotein E alleles with risk of MSA and -synuclein pathology, and also examined whether apolipoprotein E isoforms differentially affect -synuclein uptake in a oligodendrocyte cell. Methods: One hundred sixty-eight pathologically confirmed MSA patients, 89 clinically diagnosed MSA patients, and 1,277 control subjects were genotyped for Apolipoprotein E. Human oligodendrocyte cell lines were incubated with -synuclein and recombinant human apolipoprotein E, with internalized -synuclein imaged by confocal microscopy and cells analyzed by flow cytometry. Results: No significant association with risk of MSA or was observed for either Apolipoprotein E 2 or 4. -Synuclein burden was also not associated with Apolipoprotein E alleles in the pathologically confirmed patients. Interestingly, in our cell assays, apolipoprotein E 4 significantly reduced -synuclein uptake in the oligodendrocytic cell line. Conclusions: Despite differential effects of apolipoprotein E isoforms on -synuclein uptake in a human oligodendrocytic cell, we did not observe a significant association at the Apolipoprotein E locus with risk of MSA or -synuclein pathology.

  • Structure near the K- + p + p threshold in the in-flight 3He(K-, Λp)n reaction
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Progress of Theoretical and Experimental Physics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2050-3911. ; 2016:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To search for an S = -1 di-baryonic state which decays toΛp, the 3He(K-,Λp)nmissing reaction was studied at 1.0 GeV/c. Unobserved neutrons were kinematically identified from the missing mass MX of the 3He (K-,Λp) X reaction in order to have a large acceptance for the Λpn final state. The observed Λpn events, distributed widely over the kinematically allowed region of the Dalitz plot, establish that the major component comes from a three-nucleon absorption process. A concentration of events at a specific neutron kinetic energy was observed in a region of low momentum transfer to the Λp. To account for the observed peak structure, the simplest S-wave polewas assumed to exist in the reaction channel, having a Breit-Wigner formin energy and with a Gaussian form factor. A minimum X2 method was applied to deduce its mass, MX = 2355+6 -8 (stat.) ±12 (syst.)MeV/c2, and decay width, γX = 110+19 -17 (stat.) ±27 (syst.)MeV/c2, respectively. The form factor parameter QX ∼ 400MeV/c implies that the range of the interaction is about 0.5 fm.

  • Study of the elementary (K -, n) reactions to search for the K NN bound state via the 3He (K -, n) reaction at J-PARC
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: XVIth International Conference on Hadron Spectroscopy, Hadron 2015. - : Author(s). - 9780735413894 ; 1735
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have searched for the simplest kaonic nuclear state, K̄NN, using the in-flight 3He (K-, n) reaction at the J-PARC hadron experimental facility. In the semi-inclusive neutron missing-mass spectrum at θnlab=0°, an excess of yield was observed just below the K- pp mass-threshold, which cannot be explained by any elementary reactions [PTEP 2015, 061D01]. To understand the missing-mass spectrum of 3He (K-, n) X, we investigated the elementary (K-, n) reactions using hydrogen and deuterium targets. The p (K-, n) X missing-mass spectrum was well described by the charge-exchange reaction. However, in the d (K-, n) X spectrum, we observed an excess of yield just below the K- p mass-threshold, which was similar to that in the 3He (K-, n) X spectrum.

  • Beamline test of a transition-edge-sensor spectrometer in preparation for kaonic-atom measurements
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity. - 1051-8223. ; 27:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We are developing a new technique to apply transition-edge sensors (TESs) to X-ray spectroscopy of exotic atoms, especially of kaonic atoms. To demonstrate the feasibility of this pioneering project, performance of a TES-based X-ray detector was evaluated in pion- and kaon-beam environments at particle accelerators. We successfully observed X-rays from pionic-carbon atoms with a resolution as good as 7 eV FWHM at 6 keV. Also at a kaon beamline, we confirmed that the TES spectrometer will be able to achieve our resolution goal, 6 eV, in our first scientific campaign to measure X-rays from kaonic-helium atoms.
