  • Packet or Circuit Switched Voice Radio Bearers-A Capacity Evaluation for GERAN
  • 2002
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • GERAN, including the EDGE radio interface, con-stitutes the 3G evolution of GSM. The use of packet switched voice radio bearers has been discussed in the GERAN standardization, but has as yet not been adopted. This paper presents a thorough capacity comparison of circuit and packet switched voice bearers, applied to GERAN. Thus the standardization decision is verified, but also a framework for future similar investigations is provided. Several parameters affect the relative performance of circuit and packet switching. This report evaluates the effect of four of these parameters, expected to have major impact on the relative performance: reuse factor, resource pool size, voice activity, and additional overhead in the packet switched case. Varying the above parameters, it is seen that in certain blocking-limited scenarios packet switching may increase capacity significantly. The highest overall capacity is however achieved in inter-ference-limited scenarios, for which packet switching provides no capacity gain.

  • Interference cancellation using antenna diversity for EDGE-enhanced data rates in GSM and TDMA/136
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Proc. of IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference, vol. 4. - 0780354354 ; , s. 1956-1960
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • EDGE (enhanced data rates for global evolution) is one of the future wireless communication systems, offering high bit rates and packet data services. For data services an increased link quality will directly translate into improved throughput. A well-known technique that improves link performance is antenna diversity. Antenna diversity also enables interference-cancellation methods, which are evaluated in this paper. The conclusion is that introducing interference rejection in a GSM/EDGE classic scenario could increase average user bit rate by 26%. In a TDMA/EDGE compact scenario the average bit rate increase could be as high as 46% due to the time synchronized structure

  • A Simple high capacity multiple service solution with controlled QoS for GERAN
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: IEEE 55TH VEHICULAR TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE, VTC SPRING 2002, VOLS 1-4, PROCEEDINGS. - : IEEE. - 0780374843 ; , s. 1728-1732
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Offering multiple services with high spectral efficiency is crucial for 3rd generation cellular systems. Further, for stable system behavior, controlling quality of service (QoS) for offered loads beyond the capacity limit of the systems is required. This paper describes and evaluates a simple, easy-to-plan concept that accomplishes this goal for the GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN). Cornerstones of the concept are tight frequency reuse, service-based power setting and power-based admission control. Preliminary results indicate that the proposed solution manages to preserve targeted QoS for a mix of services at excessive traffic loads. Moreover, different operator QoS policies may be realized in a straightforward manner.

  • Allocation of Multiple Services in Multi-Access Wireless Systems
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: 2002 4TH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON MOBILE AND WIRELESS COMMUNICATION NETWORK. - New York : IEEE. - 0780376056 ; , s. 261-265
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An attractive alternative for communications in areas in which there is little or no telecommunications infrastructure is to use Multi-hop packet radio networks (MPRNets). One major design issue in MPRNets is the formulation of Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols. Spatial TDMA (S-TDMA) is a “conflict-free” multiple access for MPRNets, which ensures that a packet transmission, whenever made, is successful. High S-TDMA system capacities can be achieved by incorporating traffic load information into the MAC protocol design. Previous investigations into Traffic Controlled S-TDMA (TC S-TDMA) protocols used fixed transmission powers. Clearly, the application of power control to these systems could improve the spatial reuse factor. In this paper a suitable power control scheme has been applied to S-TDMA. As the cost of implementing power control is relatively small, and the performance gains are substantial, a prudent design should include power control. As would be expected the introduction of power control would markedly improved the delay performance of S-TDMA.

  • An infrastructure cost evaluation of single- and multi-access networks with heterogeneous traffic density
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: 2005 IEEE 61ST VEHICULAR TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE, VOLS 1-5, PROCEEDINGS. - New York : IEEE. - 0780388879 ; , s. 3166-3170
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditional performance measures like capacity, cell radius and supported QoS are often insufficient when comparing wireless networks with different network architectures and cost structures. Instead, in this paper, infrastructure cost is used to compare different operator deployed single- and multi-access wireless networks, including 3G, WLAN and proposed 4G radio access technologies. For this purpose a model for the geographical distribution of traffic is introduced. Despite the spatially non-uniform traffic demand, single-access solutions like WCDMA High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) or Long-Term 3G Evolved, with high capacity macro cellular base stations, typically yield the lowest costs per user. In particular this holds for a hypothetical Long-Term 3G Evolved system operating in 450MHz spectrum, which indicates the importance of good coverage. Operator deployed WLAN-only solutions are more expensive even for small fractions of supported users. Multi-access solutions, combining for example WCDMA DCH or HSDPA with WLAN, do not seem to provide better cost efficiency than standard hierarchical cell structures in single-access systems. Instead, multi-access solutions have to be motivated by other factors like peak data rates and spectrum availability.

  • Controlling QoS for Mixed Voice and Data Services in GERAN - The GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 2001 International Conference on Third Generation Wireless and Beyond. - New York : IEEE. - 0780367286 ; , s. 147-151
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes and evaluates service-based power setting for the GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN). Service-based power setting is a simple radio resource management scheme that allows management of multiple services with controlled quality of service (QoS), which is crucial for 3rd generation systems. Simulation results indicate that with proper power offsets between bearer services previously established single service capacities may be maintained also for a mix of different services. It is further shown that the power setting principles work well in combination with power control.
