  • Elevated temperature spectroscopic ellipsometry analysis of the dielectric function, exciton, band-to-band transition, and high-frequency dielectric constant properties for single-crystal ZnGa2O4
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 120:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the elevated temperature (22 degrees C <= T <= 600 degrees C) dielectric function properties of melt grown single crystal ZnGa2O4 using a spectroscopic ellipsometry approach. A temperature dependent Cauchy dispersion analysis was applied across the transparent spectrum to determine the high-frequency index of refraction yielding a temperature dependent slope of 3.885(2) x 10(-5)K(-1). A model dielectric function critical point analysis was applied to examine the dielectric function and critical point transitions for each temperature. The lowest energy M-0-type critical point associated with the direct bandgap transition in ZnGa2O4 is shown to red-shift linearly as the temperature is increased with a subsequent slope of -0.72(4) meV K-1. Furthermore, increasing the temperature results in a reduction of the excitonic amplitude and increase in the exciton broadening akin to exciton evaporation and lifetime shortening. This matches current theoretical understanding of excitonic behavior and critically provides justification for an anharmonic broadened Lorentz oscillator to be applied for model analysis of excitonic contributions.

  • Zinc gallate spinel dielectric function, band-to-band transitions, and Gamma-point effective mass parameters
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 118:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We determine the dielectric function of the emerging ultrawide bandgap semiconductor ZnGa2O4 from the near-infrared (0.75eV) into the vacuum ultraviolet (8.5eV) spectral regions using spectroscopic ellipsometry on high quality single crystal substrates. We perform density functional theory calculations and discuss the band structure and the Brillouin zone Gamma-point band-to-band transition energies, their transition matrix elements, and effective band mass parameters. We find an isotropic effective mass parameter (0.24m(e)) at the bottom of the Gamma-point conduction band, which equals the lowest valence band effective mass parameter at the top of the highly anisotropic and degenerate valence band (0.24m(e)). Our calculated band structure indicates the spinel ZnGa2O4 is indirect, with the lowest direct transition at the Gamma-point. We analyze the measured dielectric function using critical-point line shape functions for a three-dimensional, M-0-type van Hove singularity, and we determine the direct bandgap with an energy of 5.27(3) eV. In our model, we also consider contributions from Wannier-Mott type excitons with an effective Rydberg energy of 14.8meV. We determine the near-infrared index of refraction from extrapolation (1.91) in very good agreement with results from recent infrared ellipsometry measurements (root epsilon(infinity)= 1.94) [M. • Selecting chemical and ecotoxicological test batteries for risk assessment of trace element-contaminated soils (phyto)managed by gentle remediation options (GRO)
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Science of the Total Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0048-9697 .- 1879-1026. ; 496, s. 510-522
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the past decades a number of field trials with gentle remediation options (GRO) have been established on trace element (TE) contaminated sites throughout Europe. Each research group selects different methods to assess the remediation success making it difficult to compare efficacy between various sites and treatments. This study aimed at selecting a minimum risk assessment battery combining chemical and ecotoxicological assays for assessing and comparing the effectiveness of GRO implemented in seven European case studies. Two test batteries were pre-selected; a chemical one for quantifying TE exposure in untreated soils and GRO-managed soils and a biological one for characterizing soil functionality and ecotoxicity. Soil samples from field studies representing one of the main GROs (phytoextraction in Belgium, Sweden, Germany and Switzerland, aided phytoextraction in France, and aided phytostabilization or in situ stabilization/phytoexclusion in Poland, France and Austria) were collected and assessed using the selected test batteries. The best correlations were obtained between NH4NO3-extractable, followed by NaNO3-extractable TE and the ecotoxicological responses. Biometrical parameters and biomarkers of dwarf beans were the most responsive indicators for the soil treatments and changes in soil TE exposures. Plant growth was inhibited at the higher extractable TE concentrations, while plant stress enzyme activities increased with the higher TE extractability. Based on these results, a minimum risk assessment battery to compare/biomonitor the sites phytomanaged by GROs might consist of the NH4NO3 extraction and the bean Plantox test including the stress enzyme activities.

  • Assessing phytotoxicity of trace element-contaminated soils phytomanaged with gentle remediation options at ten European field trials
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Science of the Total Environment. - : Elsevier. - 0048-9697 .- 1879-1026. ; 599-600, s. 1388-1398
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gentle remediation options (GRO), i.e. in situ stabilisation, (aided) phytoextraction and (aided) phytostabilisation, were implemented at ten European sites contaminated with trace elements (TE) from various anthropogenic sources: mining, atmospheric fallout, landfill leachates, wood preservatives, dredged-sediments, and dumped wastes. To assess the performance of the GRO options, topsoil was collected from each field trial, potted, and cultivated with lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) for 48 days. Shoot dry weight (DW) yield, photosynthesis efficiency and major element and TE concentrations in the soil pore water and lettuce shoots were measured.GRO implementation had a limited effect on TE concentrations in the soil pore water, although use of multivariate Co-inertia Analysis revealed a clear amelioration effect in phytomanaged soils. Phytomanagement increased shoot DW yield at all industrial and mine sites, whereas in agricultural soils improvements were produced in one out of five sites. Photosynthesis efficiency was less sensitive than changes in shoot biomass and did not discriminate changes in soil conditions.Based on lettuce shoot DW yield, compost amendment followed by phytoextraction yielded better results than phytostabilisation; moreover shoot ionome data proved that, depending on initial soil conditions, recurrent compost application may be required to maintain crop production with common shoot nutrient concentrations.

  • Longitudinal phonon plasmon mode coupling in β-Ga2O3
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 114:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this letter, we investigate a set of n-type single crystals of monoclinic symmetry beta-Ga2O3 with different free electron concentration values by generalized far infrared and infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry. In excellent agreement with our previous model prediction, we find here by experiment that longitudinal-phonon-plasmon coupled modes are polarized either within the monoclinic plane or perpendicular to the monoclinic plane. As predicted, all modes change the amplitude and frequency with the free electron concentration. The most important observation is that all longitudinal-phonon-plasmon coupled modes polarized within the monoclinic plane continuously change their direction as a function of free electron concentration.

  • Phonon properties: Phonon and free charge carrier properties in monoclinic-symmetry ß-Ga2O3
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Gallium Oxide. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030371524 - 9783030371555 - 9783030371531 ; , s. 501-534
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We present and discuss the complete set of infrared-active phonon modes in monoclinic-symmetry crystal modification gallium oxide (gallia, ββ-Ga2O3). The phonon mode set is obtained from a comprehensive analysis of generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry data in the farinfrared and infrared spectral regions investigating various n-type electrically conductive single crystal samples with different free electron volume density parameters cut under different orientations. The analysis of the ellipsometry data is performed using an eigendielectric displacement vector summation (EDVS) approach. In this approach, the effect of the free charge carriers onto the lattice modes of intrinsic ββ-Ga2O3 are removed by calculation. Density functional theory calculations are performed in the general gradient approximation and all phonon modes at the Brillouin-center and their displacement direction dependencies are obtained. Transverse and longitudinal optical phonon mode parameters polarized within the monoclinic plane as well as perpendicular to the monoclinic plane agree excellently between experiment and theory. We also present and discuss the directional limiting frequency parameters within the monoclinic plane, the shape and anisotropy of the reststrahlen band, and the order of the phonon modes in semiconductors with polar phonon modes and monoclinic crystal structure. We further present and discuss the effect of coupling of longitudinal optical phonons with free charge carriers, leading to longitudinal-phonon-plasmon coupled modes. We reveal that the coupled modes, which affect electric and thermal transport, change amplitude, frequency, and direction within the monoclinic plane as a function of free electron concentration. Finally, we show optical Hall effect measurements, and provide experimentally determined effective electron mass parameters in ββ-Ga2O3 for moderately-doped n-type samples.

  • Brillouin zone center phonon modes in ZnGa2O4
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 117:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Infrared-active lattice mode properties of melt-grown high-quality single bulk crystals of ZnGa2O4 are investigated by combined spectroscopic ellipsometry and density functional theory computation analysis. The normal spinel structure crystals are measured by spectroscopic ellipsometry at room temperature in the range of 100cm(-1)-1200cm(-1). The complex-valued dielectric function is determined from a wavenumber-by-wavenumber approach, which is then analyzed by the four-parameter semi-quantum model dielectric function approach augmented by impurity mode contributions. We determine four infrared-active transverse and longitudinal optical mode pairs, five localized impurity mode pairs, and the high frequency dielectric constant. All four infrared-active transverse and longitudinal optical mode pairs are in excellent agreement with results from our density functional theory computations. With the Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relationship, we determine the static dielectric constant, which agrees well with electrical capacitance measurements performed on similarly grown samples. We also provide calculated parameters for all Raman-active and for all silent modes and, thereby, provide a complete set of all symmetry predicted Brillouin zone center modes.

  • Optical phonon modes, static and high-frequency dielectric constants, and effective electron mass parameter in cubic In2O3
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 129:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A complete set of all optical phonon modes predicted by symmetry for bixbyite structure indium oxide is reported here from a combination of far-infrared and infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry, as well as first principles calculations. Dielectric function spectra measured on high quality, marginally electrically conductive melt grown single bulk crystals are obtained on a wavelength-by-wavelength (also known as point-by-point) basis and by numerical reduction of a subtle free charge carrier Drude model contribution(. )A four-parameter semi-quantum model is applied to determine all 16 pairs of infrared-active transverse and longitudinal optical phonon modes, including the high-frequency dielectric constant, epsilon(infinity) = 4.05 +/- 0.05. The Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relation then gives access to the static dielectric constant, epsilon(DC) = 10.55 +/- 0.07. All experimental results are in excellent agreement with our density functional theory calculations and with previously reported values, where existent. We also perform optical Hall effect measurements and determine for the unintentionally doped n-type sample a free electron density of n = (2.81 +/- 0.01) x 10(17) cm(-3), a mobility of mu = (112 +/- 3) cm(2)/(Vs), and an effective mass parameter of (0.208 +/- 0.006)m(e). Density and mobility parameters compare very well with the results of electrical Hall effect measurements. Our effective mass parameter, which is measured independently of any other experimental technique, represents the bottom curvature of the Gamma point in In2O3 in agreement with previous extrapolations. We use terahertz spectroscopic ellipsometry to measure the quasi-static response of In2O3, and our model validates the static dielectric constant obtained from the Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relation. • Microbial community structure and activity in trace elementcontaminatedsoils phytomanaged by Gentle Remediation Options (GRO)
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Environmental Pollution. - : Elsevier. - 0269-7491 .- 1873-6424. ; 231:1, s. 237-251
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gentle remediation options (GRO) are based on the combined use of plants, associated microorganisms and soil amendments, which can potentially restore soil functions and quality. We studied the effects of three GRO (aided-phytostabilisation, in situ stabilisation and phytoexclusion, and aided-phytoextraction) on the soil microbial biomass and respiration, the activities of hydrolase enzymes involved in the biogeochemical cycles of C, N, P, and S, and bacterial community structure of trace element contaminated soils (TECS) from six field trials across Europe. Community structure was studied using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) fingerprinting of Bacteria, α- and β-Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Streptomycetaceae, and sequencing of DGGE bands characteristic of specific treatments. The number of copies of genes involved in ammonia oxidation and denitrification were determined by qPCR.Phytomanagement increased soil microbial biomass at three sites and respiration at the Biogeco site (France). Enzyme activities were consistently higher in treated soils compared to untreated soils at the Biogeco site. At this site, microbial biomass increased from 696 to 2352 mg ATP kg−1 soil, respiration increased from 7.4 to 40.1 mg C-CO2 kg−1 soil d−1, and enzyme activities were 2–11-fold higher in treated soils compared to untreated soil. Phytomanagement induced shifts in the bacterial community structure at both, the total community and functional group levels, and generally increased the number of copies of genes involved in the N cycle (nirK, nirS, nosZ, and amoA). The influence of the main soil physico-chemical properties and trace element availability were assessed and eventual site-specific effects elucidated. Overall, our results demonstrate that phytomanagement of TECS influences soil biological activity in the long term.

  • Management with willow short rotation coppice increase the functional gene diversity and functional activity of a heavy metal polluted soil
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Chemosphere. - : Elsevier BV. - 0045-6535 .- 1879-1298. ; 138, s. 469-477
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We studied the microbial functional diversity, biochemical activity, heavy metals (HM) availability and soil toxicity of Cd, Pb and Zn contaminated soils, kept under grassland or short rotation coppice (SRC) to attenuate the risks associated with HM contamination and restore the soil ecological functions. Soil microbial functional diversity was analyzed by the GeoChip, a functional gene microarray containing probes for genes involved in nutrient cycling, metal resistance and stress response. Soil under SRC showed a higher abundance of microbial genes involved in C, N, P and S cycles and resistance to various HM, higher microbial biomass, respiration and enzyme activity rates, and lower HM availability than the grassland soil. The linkages between functional genes of soil microbial communities and soil chemical properties, HM availability and biochemical activity were also investigated. Soil toxicity and N, P and Pb availability were important factors in shaping the microbial functional diversity, as determined by CCA. We concluded that in HM contaminated soils the microbial functional diversity was positively influenced by SRC management through the reduction of HM availability and soil toxicity increase of nutrient cycling. The presented results can be important in predicting the long term environmental sustainability of plant-based soil remediation.
