  • New horizons for fundamental physics with LISA
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Living Reviews in Relativity. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1433-8351 .- 2367-3613. ; 25:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has the potential to reveal wonders about the fundamental theory of nature at play in the extreme gravity regime, where the gravitational interaction is both strong and dynamical. In this white paper, the Fundamental Physics Working Group of the LISA Consortium summarizes the current topics in fundamental physics where LISA observations of gravitational waves can be expected to provide key input. We provide the briefest of reviews to then delineate avenues for future research directions and to discuss connections between this working group, other working groups and the consortium work package teams. These connections must be developed for LISA to live up to its science potential in these areas.

  • Black holes, gravitational waves and fundamental physics : a roadmap
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Classical and quantum gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 36:14
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. The purpose of this work is to present a concise, yet comprehensive overview of the state of the art in the relevant fields of research, summarize important open problems, and lay out a roadmap for future progress. This write-up is an initiative taken within the framework of the European Action on 'Black holes, Gravitational waves and Fundamental Physics'.

  • The PAU Survey : a forward modeling approach for narrow-band imaging
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1475-7516. ; :11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Weak gravitational lensing is a powerful probe of the dark sector, once measurement systematic errors can be controlled. In [1], a calibration method based on forward modeling, called MCCL, was proposed. This relies on fast image simulations (e.g., UFig [2, 3]) that capture the key features of galaxy populations and measurement effects. The MCCL approach has been used in [4] to determine the redshift distribution of cosmological galaxy samples and, in the process, the authors derived a model for the galaxy population mainly based on broad-band photometry. Here, we test this model by forward modeling the 40 narrow-band photometry given by the novel PAU Survey (PAUS). For this purpose, we apply the same forced photometric pipeline on data and simulations using Source Extractor [5]. The image simulation scheme performance is assessed at the image and at the catalogues level. We find good statistical agreement for the distribution of pixel values, for the magnitude-size relation and for the inter-band correlations. We also discuss the small residual differences in the magnitude distributions. A principal component analysis is then performed, in order to derive a global comparison of the narrow-band photometry between the data and the simulations. We use a 'mixing' matrix to quantify the agreement between the observed and simulated sets of Principal Components (PCs). We find good agreement, especially for the first three most significant PCs. We also compare the coefficients of the PCs decomposition. While there are slight differences for some coefficients, we find that the distributions are consistent. Together, our results show that the galaxy population model derived from broad-band photometry is in good overall agreement with the PAUS data. This offers good prospects for incorporating spectral information to the galaxy model by adjusting it to the PAUS narrow-band data using forward modeling.

  • Probing the early Universe with B-mode polarization : The Spider instrument, optical modelling and non-Gaussianity
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • One of the main goals of modern observational cosmology is to constrain or detect a stochastic background of primordial gravitational waves. The existence of such a background is a generic prediction of the inflationary paradigm: the leading explanation for the universe's initial perturbations. A detection of the gravitational wave signal would provide strong evidence for the paradigm and would amount to an indirect probe of an energy scale far beyond that of conventional physics. Several dedicated experiments search for the signal by performing highly accurate measurements of a unique probe of the primordial gravitational wave background: the B-mode signature in the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. A part of this thesis is devoted to one of these experiments: the balloon-borne Spider instrument. The analysis of the first dataset, obtained in two (95 and 150 GHz) frequency bands during a January 2015 Antarctic flight, is described, along with details on the characterisation of systematic signal and the calibration of the instrument. The case of systematic signal due to poorly understood optical properties is treated in more detail. In the context of upcoming experiments, a study of systematic optical effects is presented as well as a numerically efficient method to consistently propagate such effects through an analysis pipeline. This is achieved by a `beam convolution' algorithm capable of simulating the contribution from the entire sky, weighted by the optical response, to the instrument's time-ordered data. It is described how the algorithm can be employed to forecast the performance of upcoming CMB experiments. In the final part of the thesis, an additional use of upcoming B-mode data is described. Constraints on the non-Gaussian correlation between the large-angular-scale B-mode field and the CMB temperature or E-mode anisotropies on small angular scales constitute a rigorous consistency check of the inflationary paradigm. An efficient statistical estimation procedure, a generalised bispectrum estimator, is derived and the constraining power of upcoming CMB data is explored.

  • Field redefinitions in theories beyond Einstein gravity using the language of differential forms
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 95:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the role of field redefinitions in general scalar-tensor theories. In particular, we first focus on the class of field redefinitions linear in the spin-2 field and involving derivatives of the spin-0 mode, generically known as disformal transformations. We start by defining the action of a disformal transformation in the tangent space. Then, we take advantage of the great economy of means of the language of differential forms to compute the full transformation of Horndeski's theory under general disformal transformations. We obtain that Horndeski's action maps onto itself modulo a reduced set of non-Horndeski Lagrangians. These new Lagrangians are found to be invariant under disformal transformation that depend only in the first derivatives of the scalar. Moreover, these combinations of Lagrangians precisely appear when expressing in our basis the constraints of the recently proposed extended scalar-tensor theories. These results allow us to classify the different orbits of scalar-tensor theories invariant under particular disformal transformations, namely, the special disformal, kinetic disformal, and disformal Horndeski orbits. In addition, we consider generalizations of this framework. We find that there are possible well-defined extended disformal transformations that have not been considered in the literature. However, they generically cannot link Horndeski theory with extended scalar-tensor theories. Finally, we study further generalizations in which extra fields with different spin are included. These field redefinitions can be used to connect different gravity theories such as multiscalar-tensor theories, generalized Proca theories, and bigravity. We discuss how the formalism of differential forms could be useful for future developments in these lines.
