  • Intrinsic energy band alignment of functional oxides
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physica Status Solidi - Rapid Research Letetrs. - : Wiley. - 1862-6254 .- 1862-6270. ; 8:6, s. 571-576
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The energy band alignment at interfaces between different materials is a key factor, which determines the function of electronic devices. While the energy band alignment of conventional semiconductors is quite well understood, systematic experimental studies on oxides are still missing. This work presents an extensive study on the intrinsic energy band alignment of a wide range of functional oxides using photoelectron spectroscopy with in-situ sample preparation. The studied materials have particular technological importance in diverse fields as solar cells, piezotronics, multiferroics, photoelectrochemistry and oxide electronics. Particular efforts have been made to verify the validity of transitivity, in order to confirm the intrinsic nature of the obtained band alignment and to understand the underlying principles. Valence band offsets up to 1.6 eV are observed. The large variation of valence band maximum energy can be explained by the different orbital contributions to the density of states in the valence band. The framework provided by this work enables the general understanding and prediction of energy band alignment at oxide interfaces, and furthermore the tailoring of energy level matching for charge transfer in functional oxides. • Adapt and strive: How ventures under resource constraints create value through business model adaptations
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Creativity and Innovation Management. - : Wiley. - 0963-1690 .- 1467-8691. ; 26:3, s. 233-246
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper looks into how new ventures organize their business models in order to meet their available resources. It employs the business model as the unit of analysis to investigate the role and nature of business model adaptation as a coping mechanism with resource constraints. By drawing on a case study with two ventures starting with different resources, the paper shows how those ventures use business model adaptation under resource constraints as a way to create comparable offerings. Business model adaptation involves a process of continuous search, selection, and improvement in value creation, value proposition, and value capture, based on the surrounding environment. For the two new ventures included in this study, early business model adaptations were related to (1) market geography and customer, (2) strategy marketing, sales, and growth, (3) profit profit formula and cost structure, and (4) structures, processes, and capabilities. This paper also shows how the adaptation process is conditioned by the venture's stock and flow of resources. Bringing a resource perspective into the process of business model adaptation implies practical implications for new ventures that are developing and adapting their business models to strategically co-develop their offering with their resources such that they match required adaptations.

  • Expression of ErbB3, ErbB4, and neuregulin-1 mRNA during tooth development
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Developmental Dynamics. - : Wiley. - 1058-8388 .- 1097-0177. ; 224:3, s. 356-360
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The receptor tyrosine kinases ErbB3 and ErbB4, which bind to various variants of neuregulin (NRG), play fundamental roles in neural development and in organs, which form through epithelial-mesenchymal interactions. Here, we demonstrate that NRG-1 and the receptors ErbB3 and ErbB4 are expressed locally during rodent tooth development. However, the mRNA expression patterns of ErbB3 and ErbB4 were distinctly different during odontogenesis. Examinations of teeth in genetically heart-rescued ErbB4-/- mice did not reveal any obvious deviation from the normal phenotype. The results suggest that ErbB3 and ErbB4 may participate in tooth morphogenesis. The specific interactions between NRG isoforms and ErbB receptors during this process remain to be determined.

  • BDE-47 and 6-OH-BDE-47 modulate calcium homeostasis in primary fetal human neural progenitor cells via ryanodine receptor-independent mechanisms
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Archives of Toxicology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0340-5761 .- 1432-0738. ; 88:8, s. 1537-1548
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are bioaccumulating flame retardants found in rising concentrations in human tissue. Epidemiological and animal studies have raised concern for their potential to induce developmental neurotoxicity (DNT). Considering the essential role of calcium homeostasis in neurodevelopment, PBDE-induced disturbance of intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+](i)) may underlie PBDE-induced DNT. To test this hypothesis, we investigated acute effects of BDE-47 and 6-OH-BDE-47 on [Ca2+](i) in human neural progenitor cells (hNPCs) and unraveled involved signaling pathways. Short-time differentiated hNPCs were exposed to BDE-47, 6-OH-BDE-47, and multiple inhibitors/stimulators of presumably involved signaling pathways to determine possible effects on [Ca2+](i) by single-cell microscopy with the fluorescent dye Fura-2. Initial characterization of calcium signaling pathways confirmed the early developmental stage of hNPCs. In these cells, BDE-47 (2 mu M) and 6-OH-BDE-47 (0.2 mu M) induce [Ca2+](i) transients. This increase in [Ca2+](i) is due to extracellular Ca2+ influx and intracellular release of Ca2+, mainly from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). While extracellular Ca2+ seems to enter the cytoplasm upon 6-OH-BDE-47 by interfering with the cell membrane and independent of Ca2+ ion channels, ER-derived Ca2+ is released following activation of protein lipase C and inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor, but independently of ryanodine receptors. These findings illustrate that immature developing hNPCs respond to low concentrations of 6-OH-BDE-47 by an increase in [Ca2+](i) and provide new mechanistic explanations for such BDE-induced calcium disruption. Thus, these data support the possibility of a critical window of PBDE exposure, i.e., early human brain development, which has to be acknowledged in risk assessment.

  • Production of net-shape Mn-Al permanent magnets by electron beam melting
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Additive Manufacturing. - : Elsevier BV. - 2214-8604 .- 2214-7810. ; 30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main goal of this work is the adoption of additive manufacturing for the production of inexpensive rare-earth free MnAl-based permanent magnets. The use of more advanced binder-free additive manufacturing technique such as Electron Beam Melting (EBM) allows obtaining fully-dense magnetic materials with advanced topology and complex shapes. We focus on the feasibility of controlling the phase formation in additively manufactured Mn-Al alloys by employing post-manufacturing heat treatment. The as-manufactured EBM samples contain 8% of the desired ferromagnetic τ-MnAl phase. After the optimized annealing treatment, the content of the τ-phase was increased to 90%. This sample has a coercivity value of 0.15 T, which is also the maximum achieved in conventionally produced binary MnAl magnets. Moreover, the EBM samples are fully dense and have the same density as the samples produced by conventional melting density.

  • Creating value through external intellectual property commercialization: a desorptive capacity view
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Technology Transfer. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0892-9912 .- 1573-7047. ; 38:6, s. 930-949
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In open innovation systems, capturing value through external intellectual property (IP) commercialization is an increasingly important strategy for firms to keep pace with competitive changes. However, many firms have major difficulties in creating value through external patent exploitation. To understand these challenges, this paper explores how firms manage their external patent exploitation based on a multiple case study research design with fourteen firms from the pharmaceutical and chemical industry. Adopting a desorptive capacity perspective we find four main factors influencing the firms' management of external patent exploitation: the type of value creation, the organizational structure, the locus of initiative, and the extent of know-how transfer along with the patent. Based on these factors, three archetypes of external patent exploitation with different levels of desorptive capacity are identified. The article extends the concept of desorptive capacity and existing literature on intellectual property management in the context of open innovation. Managerial implications helping firms to implement external IP commercialization structures are discussed.
