  • Comparison between fMRI and Wada test
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Epilepsia. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0013-9580 .- 1528-1167. ; 45:Suppl. 3, s. 84-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Language lateralisation in patients with epilepsy is more often atypical compared to a normal population. The Wada procedure for testing language and memory has some shortcomings; it is invasive and there is always a risk that the patient becomes too sedated, leading to difficulties in performing the tests. fMR1have shown promising results, showing good correlation to the Wadaprocedure concerning language-lateralisation. The aim of this studywas to investigate if fMRI could be used to determine which hemisphere was language dominant and compare the fMR1 results with the Wada-tests with a focus on patients with a complicated lateralisation.Method: 4 subjects were tested and they had a heterogeneous (I left handed, I ambidexter and 2 right handed) lateralisation and one had a severe dyslexia. A standard Wada procedure was used and compared with a fMRl investigation using a language paradigm. Results: The patients studied showed different language lateralisation patterns (2 left hemisphere and 2 bilateral). In two patients the two tests were fully concordant, in the others the fMRI showed a more bilateral pattern. Conclusion: fMR1 adds valuable information in the pre-surgical investigation for patients with a complex language lateralisation.

  • Non-invasive evaluation of alginate/poly-L-lysine/alginate microcapsules by magnetic resonance microscopy
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Biomaterials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0142-9612 .- 1878-5905. ; 28:15, s. 2438-2445
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this report, we present data to demonstrate the utility of H-1 MR microscopy to non-invasively examine alginate/poly-L-lysine/ alginate (APA) microcapsules. Specifically, high-resolution images were used to visualize and quantify the poly-L-lysine (PLL) layer, and monitor temporal changes in the alginate gel microstructure during a month long in vitro culture. The thickness of the alginate/PLL layer was quantified to be 40.6 +/- 6.2 mu m regardless of the alginate composition used to generate the beads or the time of alginate/PLL interaction (2, 6, or 20 min). However, there was a notable difference in the contrast of the PLL layer that depended upon the guluronic content of the alginate and the alginate/PLL interaction time. The T-2 relaxation time and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of the alginate matrix were measured periodically throughout the month long culture period. Alginate beads generated with a high guluronic content alginate demonstrated a temporal decrease in T-2 over the duration of the experiment, while ADC was unaffected. This decrease in T-2 is attributed to a reorganization of the alginate microstructure due to periodic media exchanges that mimicked a regular feeding regiment for cultured cells. In beads coated with a PLL layer, this temporal decrease in T-2 was less pronounced suggesting that the PLL layer helped maintain the integrity of the initial alginate microstructure. Conversely, alginate beads generated with a high mannuronic content alginate (with or without a PLL layer) did not display temporal changes in either T-2 or ADC. This observation suggests that the microstructure of high mannuronic content alginate beads is less susceptible to culture conditions.

  • Health outcomes in young adulthood among former child refugees in Denmark, Norway and Sweden: A cross-country comparative study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Public Health. - : SAGE Publications. - 1403-4948 .- 1651-1905. ; 51:3, s. 330-338
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims: This study aimed at comparing several health outcomes in young adulthood among child refugees who settled in the different immigration and integration policy contexts of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Methods: The study population included refugees born between 1972 and 1997 who immigrated before the age of 18 and settled in the three Nordic countries during 1986-2005. This population was followed up in national registers during 2006-2015 at ages 18-43 years and was compared with native-born majority populations in the same birth cohorts using sex-stratified and age-adjusted regression analyses. Results: Refugee men in Denmark stood out with a consistent pattern of higher risks for mortality, disability/illness pension, psychiatric care and substance misuse relative to native-born majority Danish men, with risk estimates being higher than comparable estimates observed among refugee men in Norway and Sweden. Refugee men in Sweden and Norway also demonstrated increased risks relative to native-born majority population men for inpatient psychiatric care, and in Sweden also for disability/illness pension. With the exception of increased risk for psychotic disorders, outcomes among refugee women were largely similar to or better than those of native-born majority women in all countries. Conclusions: The observed cross-country differences in health indicators among refugees, and the poorer health outcomes of refugee men in Denmark in particular, may be understood in terms of marked differences in Nordic integration policies. However, female refugees in all three countries had better relative health outcomes than refugee men did, suggesting possible sex differentials that warrant further investigation.
