  • Analysis of prefetching schemes for TV-on-Demand service
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: ICDT 2015 : the Tenth International Conference on Digital Telecommunications. - : International Academy, Research and Industry Association (IARIA). - 9781612083964
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • TV-on-Demand service has become one of the most popular Internet applications that continuously attracts higher user interests. With rapidly increasing user demand, the existing network conditions may not be able to ensure low start-up delay of video playback. Prefetching has been broadly investigated to cope with the start-up latency problem which is also known as user perceived latency. In this paper, we analyse request patterns for TV programs from a popular Swedish TV service provider over 11 weeks. According to the analysis, we propose a prefetching scheme at the user end to preload videos before user requests. Our prefetching scheme significantly improves the cache hit ratio compared to terminal caching and we note that there is a potential to further improve prefetching performance by customizing prefetching schemes for different video categories. We further present a cost model to determine the optimal number of videos to prefetch. Finally, we discuss available time for prefetching and suggest that when to make prefetching decisions depends on the user demand patterns of different video categories.

  • ALPHA Proposal of mapping QoS parameters between UPnP home network and GMPLS access
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: ACCESS NETWORKS. ; , s. 226-239
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  This paper is treating the interdomain QoS signaling between the home and access domains with a focus on applying it for providing QoS between a UPnP-QoS based home network and GMPLS based access network. The work presented here is defining a possible approach for an interface between UPnP-QoS and GMPLS in order to move towards end-to-end QoS establishment as well as investigating the complexity of such a solution. We present the QoS parameters and mechanisms in both UPnP-QoS and GMPLS and how they can be matched to create a coherent QoS architecture.

  • QoS enabled resource allocation over an UPnP-QoS/€”GMPLS controlled edge
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 2011 IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference, CCNC'2011. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). ; , s. 218-222
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on the problem of coherent resource allocation within home and access networks. The interdomain QoS signaling discussed here enables the initiation of the QoS provisioning in the home and access from the end device in users home. The home network considered in this paper is UPnP-QoS enabled while the access network is GMPLS based. We propose and implement an interface between aforementioned network segments allowing for end-to-end QoS establishment. We present the QoS parameters and mechanisms in both UPnP-QoS and GMPLS and how they can be matched to create a coherent QoS architecture. Additionally we investigate the complexity of such a solution and present implementation results.

  • Prefetching Schemes and Performance Analysis for TV on Demand Services
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal on Advances in Telecommunications. - 1942-2601. ; 8:3&4, s. 162-172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • TV-on-Demand services have become one of the most popular Internet applications that continuously attracts high user interest. With rapidly increasing user demands, the existing network conditions may not be able to ensure a low start-up delay of video playback. Prefetching has been broadly investigated to cope with the start-up latency problem, which is also known as user perceived latency. In this paper, two datasets from different IPTV providers are used to analyse the TV program request patterns. According to the results, we propose a prefetching scheme at the user end to preload videos before user requests. For both datasets, our prefetching scheme significantly improves the cache hit ratio compared to passive caching and we note that there is a potential to further improve prefetching performance by customizing prefetching schemes for different video categories. We further present a cost model to determine the optimal number of videos to prefetch. We also discuss if there is enough time for prefetching. Finally, more factors, which may have an impact on optimizing prefetching performance, are further discussed, such as the jump patterns over different time in a day and the the distribution of each video’s viewing length.

  • Demonstration of a GMPLS control plane in an integrated Ethernet based access and distribution network
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Communications and Photonics Conference and Exhibition (ACP), 2010 Asia. ; , s. 467-468
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In next generation optical access the integration with the distribution network will probably become much more pronounced than today with a focus on "Ethernet everywhere". We have demonstrated a multi-layer control plane over a combined access and aggregation network. The implementation is based on modifying and adapting existing GMPLS protocols.

  • Off-loading the aggregation networks by locality-aware peer-to-peer based content distribution
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Field measurements show that more than half of the Internet traffic could be able to take advantage of the local data storage and distribution by utilizing the peer–to–peer (P2P) technique, which in many cases can offer higher scalability and lower price than the client–server based applications. However, typically Internet service providers (ISPs) are limiting P2P applications, because P2P traffic may unnecessarily travel through areas managed by other ISPs and hence cause additional cost when transmitting outside the ISP’s network. In this paper we employ a locality–aware content fetching strategy for the P2P application and investigate the influence of systems utilizing locally stored content on the traffic load distribution between core, metro and access networks. Moreover, we quantitatively evaluate the improvement of the resource utilization in an access network along with the inter–ISP bandwidth saving. Our simulation results show that using locality aware content fetching in access network can reduce traffic loads in the metro and core networks by keeping it closer to the access via local bridging. The big amount of localized P2P traffic in the access network may introduce a new challenge for next generation access networks to cost–efficiently handle the local traffic.

  • BFD-triggered, GMPLS-based, multi-layer ethernet access network protection
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 2011 Asia Communications and Photonics Conference and Exhibition, ACP 2011.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we present a solution for providing protection in a Ethernet based access and metro network. To accomplish this we targeted two issues, protection aimed path computation in networks which does not provide fully disjoint paths, and the design and implementation of bi-directional forward detection (BFD) protocol in a GMPLS controlled Ethernet network. To the best of our knowledge, neither issue has been previously addressed through a similar approach and is therefore to be considered novel in its design and implementation. Our implementation shows good performances and reliability in both performance testing and testbed experiments.
