  • Det självklara företagandet? : Kvinnors företagande i veterinärprofessionen
  • 2013

  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During the last decades of the 20th century, a major change in welfare and housing policy was initiated in Sweden. This meant that a significant proportion of public rental housing was privatised through political decisions. This thesis is specifically concerned with how the privatization of public rental housing has been legitimized in the political debate, which is of particular importance given the symbolic value that public rental housing has had for the Swedish welfare policy. The privatisation of public housing has been particularly evident in Stockholm, which has therefore been the main focus of the thesis. The study has an in-depth empirical focus on the budget debate in the Stockholm City Council between the years 1990 and 2015. The material analysed in the thesis consists of the City Council's annual budget debate during the period 1990-2015, as well as other parts of the City Council debate. Additional material consists of campaign material, material from the public housing companies and bills and Swedish Government Official Reports (SOU) . The overall aim of the thesis is to contribute to knowledge about how the privatisation of public rental housing has been legitimised and to critically examine what this means for the way in which responsible politicians have portrayed housing and specifically its ownership. This is done by answering the following research questions: How has the privatization of public rental housing been legitimized in the city of Stockholm between 1990 and 2015? And: How have the applied legitimation strategies influenced the discursive framework of the new housing policy? Using Critical Discourse Theory, the empirical material is analysed with reference to a model of legitimation based on Theo van Leeuwen (2008). Based on van Leeuwen's model of legitimation analysis, the analysis of the policy debate reveals a predominance of moral and rational strategies to legitimize policy decisions. The usage has however varied according to the type of privatisation and when in time the legitimations took place. One of the conclusions of the thesis is how changes have been legitimised with reference to social aspects such as integration and improved conditions for inhabitants of disadvantaged areas, groups that have not primarily benefited from the privatisation practices that have taken place. The gap that emerges between those who have benefited from the policy and those who have not shows that this is a policy that has needed to be justified and thus required a legitimizing discourse. The thesis contributes to research focusing on how privatisations are shaped and understood through discursive orders and constructions.

  • Adopting Information Systems Perspectives from Small Organizations
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Why do organizations adopt information systems? Is it just because of financial reasons, of concerns for efficiency? Or is it due to external pressures, such as competitor pressure, that an organization adopts an information system? And, how does the adoption take place? Is it a linear process, or is the process one of  conflicts? Does a specific person govern this process, or do we have multiple parties involved? What happens if these conflicts occur among those involved? How does the organization move on and achieve a successful information system adoption?By investigating two organizations, one international academic journal and one South American manufacturing company, this thesis aims to investigate the whys and hows of information system adoption, and aims to contribute to the discourse on information system adoptions in small organizations – an often underrepresented segment in information system adoption literature.By adopting different theoretical lenses throughout the five research papers included, this body of work suggests that even when seemingly simple, information system adoptions can become rather complex. The cases reveal that the role of information systems and issues related to information system adoptions are often not well thought-out in the early days of the organization. The actors’ understandings of adoption and consequences mature and the information systems become more intertwined.Common use of stakeholder theory introduces general stakeholders and their interaction with the focal organization. The cases reveal that the adoption process involves multiple actors, even within what would initially appear as a stakeholder, and that those actors can be in conflict with each other. These conflicts often lead to negotiations, and the cases reveal that these negotiations are opportunities of learning; the actors engage with the information system and with each other, gaining new knowledge about the issues at hand. The dissertation argues that there are various social worlds in information system adoptions, and various factors – ranging from organizational structure to social norms – that often affect why and how the organization undergoes an adoption process. The multiple power relations and divergent interests of stakeholders in these adoption processes, and how information systems affect other parts of the organization, reinforce the need for a well thought-out, flexible and reflexive approach to information system adoptions.

  • Corporate Hegemony through Sustainability : A Study of Sustainability Standards and CSR Practices as Tools to Demobilise Community Resistance in the Albanian Oil Industry
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Many critical business scholars have disregarded sustainability standards and corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities as mere window dressing, operating as a smokescreen to hide illegitimate corporate practices. Others have pointed to these activities as hegemonic articulations, as a way to strengthen corporate alliances with and dominance over other actors in society. In this study I take an autoethnographic approach and focus on my previous employer, the oil company Bankers Petroleum Ltd. (Bankers) and their operations in Patos-Marinza, an area in south-central Albania where oil extraction facilities and residences lie close to one another. Through the lens of the Gramscian concept of hegemony and Political Discourse Theory, I examine three grievances raised by Patos-Marinza residents and Bankers’ response to these complaints. My analysis shows how community demands, that could otherwise have put pressure on improved corporate practices, were isolated and silenced in the name of sustainability and corporate responsibility. My conclusion is that rather than disregarding compliance to sustainability standards and CSR activities as window dressing, it is important to examine what these do in specific empirical contexts. As sustainability discourses continue to expand in the corporate world, this study highlights the need to critically examine if they foster change away from harmful business models or simply function as legitimising mechanisms that allow corporate power to grow stronger.
