  • Lessons Learned and Preliminary Results from Implementing Simulation-Based Elements in a Clinical Psychology Programme
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Psychology Learning & Teaching (PLAT). - : Sage Publications. - 1475-7257 .- 2057-3022.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a clinical psychology training context, there is a need to examine students' theoretical knowledge as well as their professional competence. One promising method to assess students' professional competence is the Objective and Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). In this report, we describe and discuss the implementation of OSCE on a clinical psychology programme at a university in Sweden, including lesson learned regarding the structure and content for this examination. We also report on preliminary results, in which we explored students' perceived competence and worries, and their supervisors' reports regarding their clinical practicum, in relation to a new curriculum that includes more simulation-based elements (including the OSCE) than the old curriculum. Results showed that students on the new curriculum reported lower levels of perceived competence before the clinical practicum, but increased significantly more over time in comparison to students on the old curriculum. These results are discussed in relation to the potential role of OSCE in clinical psychology students' development of professional competence. Due to methodological limitations, these results should be interpreted with caution and should be viewed as exploratory. All in all, this report can be viewed as a guideline for implementation of OSCE on similar programmes in psychology.

  • A First Examination of the Role of International Child Development Programme in School Achievement
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research. - : Routledge. - 0031-3831 .- 1470-1170. ; 65:3, s. 359-372
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to explore whether the classroomi mplementation of the International Child Development Programme (ICDP) for secondary school students (grade 9) was linked to better school achievement. The goal of the ICDP is to increase school achievement by promoting positive teacher-student relationships. The study, performed in Sweden, applied a pre–post design (four years) with matched intervention and control schools (N = 148). The post-intervention assessments showed that there were significant differences in school achievement in Grade 9 between the intervention school andthe control school. Specifically, a greater proportion of students at the intervention school demonstrated improvement in school subjects and achieved the competency requirements to enter an upper secondary school programme. Based on the results, the ICDP can be considered an important intervention to promote student learning by promoting positive teacher-student relationships.

  • Beliefs about Expressing Love to Adolescents among Ethnically and Economically Diverse Mothers
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Youth and Adolescence. - : Plenum Publishing. - 0047-2891 .- 1573-6601. ; 50:3, s. 536-549
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Parental love promotes positive developmental outcomes among adolescents, yet knowledge about how context might influence the behaviors parents deem as loving is limited. This study examined mothers' beliefs about expressing love to adolescent children in diverse ethnic and socioeconomic groups. Participants were 60 European American, 63 African American, and 60 Latina mothers. Household income (the indicator of socioeconomic status) varied within each ethnic group. Beliefs about the most important ways to express love differed by ethnicity more so than income. Latina mothers were more likely than other mothers to emphasize behaviors that involve family togetherness and practical help and guidance, and less likely to emphasize verbal affection or promoting independence. Mothers from all groups believed that "correction and discipline" was an important expression of love. The findings contribute to an ecologically sensitive understanding of parenting during adolescence, highlighting similarities as well as differences across ethnic and income groups.

  • Developmental Trajectories of Parental Self-Efficacy as Children Transition to Adolescence in Nine Countries : Latent Growth Curve Analyses
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Youth and Adolescence. - : Plenum Publishing. - 0047-2891 .- 1573-6601. ; 53, s. 1047-1065
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Little is known about the developmental trajectories of parental self-efficacy as children transition into adolescence. This study examined parental self-efficacy among mothers and fathers over 3 1/2 years representing this transition, and whether the level and developmental trajectory of parental self-efficacy varied by cultural group. Data were drawn from three waves of the Parenting Across Cultures (PAC) project, a large-scale longitudinal, cross-cultural study, and included 1178 mothers and 1041 fathers of children who averaged 9.72 years of age at T1 (51.2% girls). Parents were from nine countries (12 ethnic/cultural groups), which were categorized into those with a predominant collectivistic (i.e., China, Kenya, Philippines, Thailand, Colombia, and Jordan) or individualistic (i.e., Italy, Sweden, and USA) cultural orientation based on Hofstede's Individualism Index (Hofstede Insights, 2021). Latent growth curve analyses supported the hypothesis that parental self-efficacy would decline as children transition into adolescence only for parents from more individualistic countries; parental self-efficacy increased over the same years among parents from more collectivistic countries. Secondary exploratory analyses showed that some demographic characteristics predicted the level and trajectory of parental self-efficacy differently for parents in more individualistic and more collectivistic countries. Results suggest that declines in parental self-efficacy documented in previous research are culturally influenced.

  • Child-Invested Contingent Self-Esteem and Parenting : Exploring Differentiations by Child Successes or Failures and Ethnicity/Race
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Social and Personal Relationships. - : Sage Publications. - 0265-4075 .- 1460-3608. ; 39:6, s. 1669-1692
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Child-invested contingent self-esteem (CSE), or the extent to which parents derive their self-esteem from their children's accomplishments, has wide implications for parents and the parenting context. This study investigates links between CSE and parenting behaviors and beliefs and differentiates between CSE based on children's success versus failure. It also examines whether associations vary across ethnicity/race. Recruited through Qualtrics, participants were 1077 parents (50% fathers; 65% White, 16% Latinx, 13% Black; 6% Asian American) of children (55% boys) in 6(th)-12(th) grade. Structural Equation Modeling shows that parents who based their self-esteem on their children's failures tended to also practice negative parenting behaviors and hold negative parental beliefs. However, parents who based their self-esteem on children's successes reported positive behaviors and beliefs. Interactions suggest that CSE-success counteracts negative associations between CSE-failure and parenting, at least for White and Black parents. Additional differences across ethnicity/race and related implications are discussed.

  • A Systematic Review of Parental Self-efficacy Among Parents of School-Age Children and Adolescents
  • 2029
  • Ingår i: Adolescent Research Review. - : Springer. - 2363-8346 .- 2363-8354. ; 9:1, s. 75-91
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What function does parental self-efficacy have for parenting behaviors and children's adjustment, and what explains individual variations in parents' self-efficacy? Parental self-efficacy involves parents' beliefs about their influence on their children and this systematic review presents results from 35 empirical studies published between 2003 and 2022 among parents of school-aged children and adolescents. First, the studies in this review show a bi-directional association between parental self-efficacy and positive parenting, and some empirical evidence that parental self-efficacy influences children indirectly, via parenting. The few longitudinal studies examining associations between parental self-efficacy and child behaviors suggest that self-efficacy might emerge as a reaction to children's behaviors. Second, many child, parent, and sociocultural factors were shown to predict parental self-efficacy (e.g., child gender and age, parents' psychological well-being, and socio-economic status), and results suggest that these associations are similar across multiple countries and age groups. Finally, studies reporting on parental self-efficacy at different time points or a correlation between self-efficacy and the child's age suggested that parental self-efficacy decreases over the school-age and adolescent period. This review shows the complex role of parental self-efficacy in associations with parent and child factors, and it also highlight questions to address for future research.

  • A test of cognitive dissonance theory to explain parents’ reactions to youths’ alcohol intoxication
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Studies have shown that parents reduce control and support in response to youths’ drinking. Why they react this way, however, is still much unknown. From cognitive dissonance theory, we derived hypotheses about parents’ reactions. Methods: We used a longitudinal, school-based sample of 494 youths (13 and 14 years, 56% boys) and their parents. General Linear Model (GLM) analyses were used to test the main hypotheses. Results:In accord with our hypotheses, parents who encountered their youths intoxicated became less opposed to underage drinking over time. In addition, parents who remained strongly opposed to youth drinking experienced more worries than parents who became less opposed. Alternative explanations for the results were tested, but were not supported. Conclusions: The findings suggest that to eliminate the dissonance between their strict attitudes against youth drinking and their knowledge of their own youths’ drinking, parents changed their attitudes and became more lenient.
