  • The Large Observatory for X-ray Timing (LOFT)
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Experimental Astronomy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0922-6435 .- 1572-9508. ; 34:2, s. 415-444
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-time-resolution X-ray observations of compact objects provide direct access to strong-field gravity, to the equation of state of ultradense matter and to black hole masses and spins. A 10 m(2)-class instrument in combination with good spectral resolution is required to exploit the relevant diagnostics and answer two of the fundamental questions of the European Space Agency (ESA) Cosmic Vision Theme "Matter under extreme conditions", namely: does matter orbiting close to the event horizon follow the predictions of general relativity? What is the equation of state of matter in neutron stars? The Large Observatory For X-ray Timing (LOFT), selected by ESA as one of the four Cosmic Vision M3 candidate missions to undergo an assessment phase, will revolutionise the study of collapsed objects in our galaxy and of the brightest supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei. Thanks to an innovative design and the development of large-area monolithic silicon drift detectors, the Large Area Detector (LAD) on board LOFT will achieve an effective area of similar to 12 m(2) (more than an order of magnitude larger than any spaceborne predecessor) in the 2-30 keV range (up to 50 keV in expanded mode), yet still fits a conventional platform and small/medium-class launcher. With this large area and a spectral resolution of < 260 eV, LOFT will yield unprecedented information on strongly curved spacetimes and matter under extreme conditions of pressure and magnetic field strength.

  • Treatment of Chronic Pulmonary Aspergillosis: Current Standards and Future Perspectives
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Respiration. - : S. Karger AG. - 1423-0356 .- 0025-7931. ; 96:2, s. 159-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) complicates conditions including tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and sarcoidosis, and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Surgical cure should be considered where feasible; however, many patients are unsuitable for surgery due to extensive disease or poor respiratory function. Azoles are the only oral drug with anti-<i>Aspergillus</i> activity and itraconazole and voriconazole are considered as first-line drugs. A randomized controlled trial demonstrated improvement or stability in three-quarters of patients given 6 months of itraconazole, but a quarter relapsed on stopping therapy. Long-term treatment may therefore be required in some cases. Itraconazole, voriconazole and posaconazole require therapeutic drug monitoring. No published data are yet available for isavuconazole. Adverse drug effects of azoles are common, including peripheral neuropathy, heart failure, elevated liver enzymes, QTc prolongation and sun sensitivity. Many serious drug-drug interactions occur, including major interactions with rifamycins, simvastatin, warfarin, clopidogrel, immunosuppressant drugs like sirolimus. Furthermore, drug resistance occurs, including cross-resistance to all azoles, but the true prevalence is not yet determined. Intravenous therapy is possible with echinocandins or amphotericin B, but long-term use is challenging. Hemoptysis complicates CPA and can be fatal. Tranexamic acid should be given acutely to reduce bleeding. Bronchial artery embolization can stop acute bleeds. In some circumstances, emergency surgery may be necessary to resect the source of the bleed. Current CPA treatments can be beneficial but have many drawbacks. New oral anti-<i>Aspergillus</i> agents are needed, along with optimization of currently available treatments.

  • Scientific prospects for spectroscopy of the gamma-ray burst prompt emission with SVOM
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Experimental astronomy. - : SPRINGER. - 0922-6435 .- 1572-9508. ; 44:1, s. 113-127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • SVOM (Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor) is a Sino-French space mission dedicated to the study of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) in the next decade, capable to detect and localise the GRB emission, and to follow its evolution in the high-energy and X-ray domains, and in the visible and NIR bands. The satellite carries two wide-field high-energy instruments: a coded-mask gamma-ray imager (ECLAIRs; 4-150 keV), and a gamma-ray spectrometer (GRM; 15-5500 keV) that, together, will characterise the GRB prompt emission spectrum over a wide energy range. In this paper we describe the performances of the ECLAIRs and GRM system with different populations of GRBs from existing catalogues, from the classical ones to those with a possible thermal component superimposed to their non-thermal emission. The combination of ECLAIRs and the GRM will provide new insights also on other GRB properties, as for example the spectral characterisation of the subclass of short GRBs showing an extended emission after the initial spike.

  • Quantitative analysis of plasmon excitations in hard x-ray photoelectron spectra of bulk black phosphorus
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-4332 .- 1873-5584. ; 505
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Black phosphorus (BPh) is a layered material with strong in-plane anisotropy of its structural and electronic properties; in spite of the great potential of BPh for conceptually new devices in optoelectronics and plasmonics, its fundamental electronic excitations have not yet been fully elucidated. In order to discriminate collective (plasmons) and single-particle (inter band transitions) excitations, we investigate the energy-loss distribution of P 1s photoelectrons in hard X-ray photoelectron spectra of BPh over a wide energy range. The energy-loss function (ELF), averaged over the principal directions of the BPh crystal, has been retrieved by using a Fourier Transform analysis to eliminate multiple inelastic scattering events. At low loss energies (1-8 eV), weak unresolved energy loss peaks are well described by DFT calculated inter band transitions, showing some anisotropy in the dielectric function epsilon(omega, q) tensor of BPh. At high loss energies, the ELF is dominated by the collective excitation of valence electrons with a peak energy at 20.1 +/- 0.2 eV, and weak anisotropy is found in the DFT calculated Im(- 1/epsilon) tensor. The anomalously small peak energy (9.0 +/- 0.5 eV) of a weak surface plasmon resonance is attributed either to low surface electron density in the terminal phosphorene layer or to some anisotropic surface plasmon propagation.
