  • A Decade with VAMDC : Results and Ambitions
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Atoms. - : MDPI. - 2218-2004. ; 8:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an overview of the current status of the Virtual Atomic and Molecular Data Centre (VAMDC) e-infrastructure, including the current status of the VAMDC-connected (or to be connected) databases, updates on the latest technological development within the infrastructure and a presentation of some application tools that make use of the VAMDC e-infrastructure. We analyse the past 10 years of VAMDC development and operation, and assess their impact both on the field of atomic and molecular (A&M) physics itself and on heterogeneous data management in international cooperation. The highly sophisticated VAMDC infrastructure and the related databases developed over this long term make them a perfect resource of sustainable data for future applications in many fields of research. However, we also discuss the current limitations that prevent VAMDC from becoming the main publishing platform and the main source of A&M data for user communities, and present possible solutions under investigation by the consortium. Several user application examples are presented, illustrating the benefits of VAMDC in current research applications, which often need the A&M data from more than one database. Finally, we present our vision for the future of VAMDC.

  • A New Halocarbon Absorption Model Based on HITRAN Cross-Section Data and New Estimates of Halocarbon Instantaneous Clear-Sky Radiative Forcing
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems. - 1942-2466. ; 14:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article describes a new practical model for the infrared absorption of chlorofluorocarbons and other gases with dense spectra, based on high-resolution transmission molecular absorption database (HITRAN) absorption cross-sections. The model is very simple, consisting of frequency-dependent polynomial coefficients describing the pressure and temperature dependence of absorption. Currently it is implemented for the halocarbon species required by the Radiative Forcing Model Intercomparison Project. In cases where cross-section data is available at a range of different temperatures and pressures, this approach offers practical advantages compared to previously available options, and is traceable, since the polynomial coefficients follow directly from the laboratory spectra. The new model is freely available and has several important applications, notably in remote sensing and in developing advanced radiation schemes for global circulation models that include halocarbon absorption. For demonstration, the model is applied to the problem of computing instantaneous clear-sky halocarbon radiative efficiencies and present day radiative forcing. Results are in reasonable agreement with earlier assessments that were carried out with the less explicit Pinnock method, and thus broadly validate that method. Plain Language Summary Chlorofluorocarbons and other related gases have dense and complicated absorption spectra that can be measured in the laboratory. We bring such measurements to a form that can be used for simulations of the transfer of radiation through the atmosphere. Then we use the new model to calculate new estimates of the climate impact of these man-made gases. The results broadly validate earlier calculations that were done with a less explicit method.

  • Optical frequency comb Fourier transform spectroscopy of formaldehyde in the 1250 to 1390 cm−1 range : experimental line list and improved MARVEL analysis
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer. - : Elsevier. - 0022-4073 .- 1879-1352. ; 312
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use optical frequency comb Fourier transform spectroscopy to record high-resolution, low-pressure, room-temperature spectra of formaldehyde (H212C16O) in the range of 1250 to 1390 cm−1. Through line-by-line fitting, we retrieve line positions and intensities of 747 rovibrational transitions: 558 from the ν6 band, 129 from the ν4 band, and 14 from the ν3 band, as well as 46 from four different hot bands. We incorporate the accurate and precise line positions (0.4 MHz median uncertainty) into the MARVEL (measured active vibration-rotation energy levels) analysis of the H2CO spectrum. This increases the number of MARVEL-predicted energy levels by 82 and of rovibrational transitions by 5382, and substantially reduces uncertainties of MARVEL-derived H2CO energy levels over a large range: from pure rotational levels below 200 cm−1 up to multiply excited vibrational levels at 6000 cm−1. This work is an important step toward filling the gaps in formaldehyde data in the HITRAN database.

  • Precision frequency comb spectroscopy in the 8 µm range
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: CLEO 2023. - : Optical Society of America. - 9781957171258
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use Fourier transform spectroscopy based on a compact difference frequency generation comb source emitting around 8 μm to record broadband high-resolution spectra of molecules relevant to astrophysics and environmental monitoring. From the spectra we obtain line lists with sub-MHz accuracy, an order of magnitude better than previously available, and use them to refine theoretical models of these molecules. Here we report results for formaldehyde, for which the 8 μm range is missing in HITRAN.

  • Recent advances in collisional effects on spectra of molecular gases and their practical consequences
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer. - : Elsevier. - 0022-4073 .- 1879-1352. ; 213, s. 178-227
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We review progress, since publication of the book "Collisional effects on molecular spectra: Laboratory experiments and models, consequences for applications" (Elsevier, Amsterdam, 2008), on measuring, modeling and predicting the influence of pressure (ie of intermolecular collisions) on the spectra of gas molecules. We first introduce recently developed experimental techniques of high accuracy and sensitivity. We then complement the above mentioned book by presenting the theoretical approaches, results and data proposed (mostly) in the last decade on the topics of isolated line shapes, line-broadening and -shifting, line-mixing, the far wings and associated continua, and collision-induced absorption. Examples of recently demonstrated consequences of the progress in the description of spectral shapes for some practical applications (metrology, probing of gas media, climate predictions) are then given. Remaining issues and directions for future research are finally discussed.

  • Update of the HITRAN collision-induced absorption section
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Icarus. - : Elsevier. - 0019-1035 .- 1090-2643. ; 328, s. 160-175
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Correct parameterization of the Collision-induced Absorption (CIA) phenomena is essential for accurate modeling of planetary atmospheres. The HITRAN spectroscopic database provides these parameters in a dedicated section. Here, we significantly revise and extend the HITRAN CIA data with respect to the original effort described in Richard et al. [JQSRT 113, 1276 (2012)]. The extension concerns new collisional pairs as well as wider spectral and temperature ranges for the existing pairs. The database now contains CIA for N2N2, N2H2, N2-CH4, N2H2O, N2O2, O2O2, O2-CO2, CO2-CO2, H2H2, H2He, H2-CH4, H2H, HHe, CH4-CH4, CH4-CO2, CH4He, and CH4Ar collision pairs. The sources of data as well as their validation and selection are discussed. A wish list to eliminate remaining deficiencies or lack of data from the astrophysics perspective is also presented.
