  • "Detta hav av orättvisa" : Moderskap och kolonialism i Sara Lidmans Jag och min son
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Tidskrift för litteraturvetenskap. - : Föreningen för utgivandet av Tidskrift för litteraturvetenskap. - 1104-0556 .- 2001-094X. ; 53:4, s. 167-185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exploring Sara Lidman’s novel Jag och min son (1961,1963), this article delves into its nuanced intersection of motherhood and colonialism. The narrative scrutinizes Sweden’s role in the colonial system, with a particular focus on the South African apartheid regime. Through the lens of a Swedish single father navigating Johannesburg in pursuit of personal enrichment, the story highlights his strained relationship to several mother figures, unraveling complex threads that intertwine parenthood, colonial structures, and whiteness. Using the theoretical framework of motherhood studies, such as the concept of the other-mother, the analysis seeks to unveil the intricate capitalist dynamics of familial relationships within the context of international power hierarchies. These themes in Lidman’s works would only grow stronger in the years to come, and by examining Jag och min son, these early tendencies in Lidman’s writing are illuminated.

  • Jernbanans mödrar : Moderskap och berättande i Sara Lidmans Jernbaneepos
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis examines motherhood and mothering in seven novels by the Swedish author Sara Lidman (1923–2004). Published between 1977 and 1999 and collectively known as the Railroad Epic, the novels depict the industrialization of Northern Sweden in the late 19th century, and how it affected the people living there. Reading it as a story about motherhood and mothering not only broadens our understanding of Lidman’s work, but also widens the scope of representations of motherhood in Swedish literature. The study examines the depictions of lived experiences of motherhood, pregnancy and childbirth in the novels, as well as the conflict between (bodily) integrity and incorporation into family life and ideals. Moreover, it explores narratological power structures and the ethical implications of the motherhood motif. The analysis comprises close readings of the embodied experiences of motherhood and mothering, influenced by feminist phenomenological thinking. The epic is read as historiographical metafiction, as a way of using historical narratives to explore and question how history itself is told. The study uses the masculine-coded capitalist and colonial market economy that is introduced during the course of the novels to contextualize the mothers’ positions in a patriarchal structure, while focusing on mothering work to center the agency of the mothers. To this end, the thesis illustrates the width and complexity of the experiences of mothering in the novels, while connecting it to the wider themes of the epic, such as colonialism, modernity, and the conflict between community and integrity. Concerning this conflict, the study argues for a reading of pregnancy and mothering as potential sources for transcendence. Furthermore, the results highlight how already existing power structures are effected by gendered reproduction norms, creating a hierarchy amongst mothers which is then replicated in the narrative. In addition to these individual experiences, the results demonstrate how the matrilineal, along with repeated events and magical elements such as visions, ghosts, and spirits of unborn children, create a perception of existence as fragmented and multi-layered. The deconstruction of hegemonic history and storytelling is interpreted as a way to share experiences and sensations that are perceived of as ineffable, and to tell the stories of the unheard.

  • Kvinnor och moderskap i Sara Lidmans Jernbaneepos
  • 2020

  • One Hand Clapping : The Loneliness of Motherhood in Lucia Berlin's "Tiger Bites"
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Narratives of Motherhood and Mothering in Fiction and Life Writing. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783031172106 - 9783031172113 - 9783031172137 ; , s. 17-31
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The issue of safe and legal abortions is and has been highly relevant for generations of women. By describing acts that have previously been carried out in secret, literary fiction makes these experiences visible, meanwhile exposing the circular nature of women’s history. In this chapter, intergenerational experiences of motherhood are examined in Lucia Berlin’s short story “Tiger Bites,” which tells the story of a young mother seeking abortion in Mexico. In Berlin’s representation of the abortion clinic, feelings of isolation and shame are foregrounded, as well as the actual risks to the health of the women and girls involved. The portrayal of the patients and staff at the clinic highlights aspects such as class, the crossings of bodily and national borders, and agency. This chapter argues that family relationships can create feelings of isolation as well as community, and that it is only through her own choice that the protagonist can realize her agency in motherhood. The analysis ultimately argues that Berlin’s story has its own intergenerational relevance, and speaks to the present as well as to its time of initial publication.

  • Mortality among a national population sentenced to compulsory care for substance use disorders in Sweden : Descriptive study
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Evaluation and Program Planning. - : Elsevier. - 0149-7189 .- 1873-7870. ; 49, s. 153-162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweden's compulsory addiction system treats individuals with severe alcohol and narcotics use disorders. Merging data from three national level register databases of those sentenced to compulsory care from 2001 to 2009 (n = 4515), the aims of this study were to: (1) compute mortality rates to compare to the general Swedish population; (2) identify leading cause of mortality by alcohol or narcotics use; and (3) identify individual level characteristics associated with mortality among alcohol and narcotics users. In this population, 24% were deceased by 2011. The most common cause of death for alcohol users was physical ailments linked to alcohol use, while narcotics users commonly died of drug poisoning or suicide. Average age of death differed significantly between alcohol users (55.0) and narcotics users (32.5). Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified the same three factors predicting mortality: older age (alcohol users OR = 1.28, narcotic users OR = 1.16), gender [males were nearly 3 times more likely to die among narcotics users (p < .000) acid 1.6 times more likely to die among alcohol users (p < .01)] and reporting serious health problems (for alcohol users p < .000, for narcotics users p < .05). Enhanced program and government efforts are needed to implement overdose-prevention efforts and different treatment modalities for both narcotic and alcohol users. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
