  • Laser vibrometry measurements of vibration and sound fields of a bowed violin
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Measurement science and technology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-0233 .- 1361-6501. ; 17:4, s. 635-644
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Laser vibrometry measurements on a bowed violin are performed. A rotating disc apparatus, acting as a violin bow, is developed. It produces a continuous, long, repeatable, multi-frequency sound from the instrument that imitates the real bow-string interaction for a 'very long bow'. What mainly differs is that the back and forward motion of the real bow is replaced by the rotating motion with constant velocity of the disc and constant bowing force (bowing pressure). This procedure is repeatable. It is long lasting and allows laser vibrometry techniques to be used, which measure forced vibrations by bowing at all excited frequencies simultaneously. A chain of interacting parts of the played violin is studied: the string, the bridge and the plates as well as the emitted sound field. A description of the mechanics and the sound production of the bowed violin is given, i.e. the production chain from the bowed string to the produced tone.

  • A Quantitative Review of Urban Ecosystem Service Assessments : Concepts, Models, and Implementation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Ambio. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0044-7447 .- 1654-7209. ; 43:4, s. 413-433
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although a number of comprehensive reviews have examined global ecosystem services (ES), few have focused on studies that assess urban ecosystem services (UES). Given that more than half of the world's population lives in cities, understanding the dualism of the provision of and need for UES is of critical importance. Which UES are the focus of research, and what types of urban land use are examined? Are models or decision support systems used to assess the provision of UES? Are trade-offs considered? Do studies of UES engage stakeholders? To address these questions, we analyzed 217 papers derived from an ISI Web of Knowledge search using a set of standardized criteria. The results indicate that most UES studies have been undertaken in Europe, North America, and China, at city scale. Assessment methods involve bio-physical models, Geographical Information Systems, and valuation, but few study findings have been implemented as land use policy.

  • Reconnecting Cities to the Biosphere : Stewardship of Green Infrastructure and Urban Ecosystem Services
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Ambio. - : Springer. - 0044-7447 .- 1654-7209. ; 43:4, s. 445-453
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Within-city green infrastructure can offer opportunities and new contexts for people to become stewards of ecosystem services. We analyze cities as social-ecological systems, synthesize the literature, and provide examples from more than 15 years of research in the Stockholm urban region, Sweden. The social-ecological approach spans from investigating ecosystem properties to the social frameworks and personal values that drive and shape human interactions with nature. Key findings demonstrate that urban ecosystem services are generated by social-ecological systems and that local stewards are critically important. However, land-use planning and management seldom account for their role in the generation of urban ecosystem services. While the small scale patchwork of land uses in cities stimulates intense interactions across borders much focus is still on individual patches. The results highlight the importance and complexity of stewardship of urban biodiversity and ecosystem services and of the planning and governance of urban green infrastructure.

  • Social Identity in Software Development
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 IEEE/ACM 12th International Workshop on Cooperative and Human Aspects of Software Engineering (CHASE). - : IEEE/ACM. - 2574-1780 .- 2574-1837. - 9781728122403
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An agile approach has become very popular over the last decade, which requires good communication and teamwork within teams as well as with outside stakeholders. Therefore, social interaction is central for a software development team to be successful. Such social interactions form social identities and social structures in both teams and organizations. This study investigates possible effects that the social identity of individuals may have on the effectiveness of software development through seven in-dept interviews. The qualitative data from interviews were analyzed and summarized using summative content analysis, and the seven individuals also answered a questionnaire on social identity taken from social psychology research. The qualitative result shows that aspects of social identity affect software developers' behavior, and that we need to build cross-functional stable teams over time also from a pure social identity perspective in addition to the product related aspects to avoid a decreased effectiveness. However, we did not see clear connections to our operationalization of effectiveness in this study, and the quantitative analysis was also inconclusive, but we see value in our suggested method when investigating social identity in software development.

  • Immersion freezing ability of freshly emitted soot with various physico-chemical characteristics
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Atmosphere. - : MDPI AG. - 2073-4433. ; 12:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The immersion freezing ability of soot particles has in previous studies been reported in the range of low/insignificant to very high. The aims of this study were to: (i) perform detailed physico-chemical characterisation of freshly produced soot particles with very different properties, (ii) investigate the immersion freezing ability of the same particles, and (iii) investigate the potential links between physico-chemical particle properties and ice-activity. A miniCAST soot generator was used to produce eight different soot samples representing a wide range of physico-chemical properties. A continuous flow diffusion chamber was used to study each sample online in immersion mode over the temperature (T) range from −41 to −32◦C, at a supersaturation of about 10% with respect to liquid water. All samples exhibited low to no heterogeneous immersion freezing. The most active sample reached ice-activated fractions (AF) of 10−3 and 10−4 at temperatures of 1.7 and 1.9 K, respectively, above the homogeneous freezing temperature. The samples were characterized online with respect to a wide range of physico-chemical properties including effective particle density, optical properties, particle surface oxidation and soot maturity. We did observe indications of increasing immersion freezing ice-activity with increasing effective particle density and increasing particulate PAH fraction . Hence, those properties, or other properties co-varying with those, could potentially enhance the immersion freezing ice-activity of the studied soot particle types. However, we found no significant correlation between the physico-chemical properties and the observed ice-nucleating ability when the particle ensemble was extended to include previously published results including more ice-active biomass combustion soot particles. We conclude that it does not appear possible in general and in any straightforward way to link observed soot particle physico-chemical properties to the ice-nucleating ability using the online instrumentation included in this study. Furthermore, our observations support that freshly produced soot particles with a wide range of physico-chemical properties have low to insignificant immersion freezing ice-nucleating ability.

  • Complexions and grain growth retardation: First-principles modeling of phase boundaries in WC-Co cemented carbides at elevated temperatures
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Acta Materialia. - : Elsevier BV. - 1359-6454. ; 216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • WC-Co cemented carbides combine superb hardness with high toughness making them ideal for usage in metal machining and in wear resistant tools. Controlling the WC grain size is important during sintering as grain size plays a crucial role for the mechanical properties of the material. Experimental studies have observed different growth rates and grain morphologies in W-rich and C-rich materials, but the mechanism behind this has not been clarified. Here, we consider the possibility of an interface-stabilized state, a complexion, at the WC/Co phase boundary in cemented carbides, namely thin WC films with cubic structure. An interfacial phase diagram is derived using ab-initio calculations and first-principles modeling. Cluster expansions are employed to model carbon vacancies and Monte Carlo simulations to sample the configurational entropy. Force-constant fitting is used to extract the harmonic free energy for ground-state structures and the effects from anharmonicity and electronic excitations are effectively incorporated from a companion study on WC bulk phases. We predict the stabilization of thin cubic WC films at liquid phase sintering temperatures but only at W-rich conditions. This is consistent with experimental findings where thin films with cubic stacking have been observed predominantly in W-rich materials. We use this knowledge to suggest an explanation for the observed different growth rates and grain morphologies in W-rich and C-rich cemented carbides.
