  • Craft Thinking : A relational approach to making and design
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Craft and Design Practice from an Embodied Perspective. - 9781032356815 - 9781003328018
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The chapter concerns craft thinking as it occurs within the craft making process when the maker is engaged in manipulating the material using the hands and body. The aim is to explain how nonverbal craft thinking enables operating critically and coping with problems such as uncertainty, insufficient information, and insufficient quality within the craft making process. Approaching craft thinking within the framework of embodied and embedded cognition, I identify three cases of nonverbal craft thinking that recur in craft practice and examine them one by one, focusing on how each fullfils its function and what skills and cognitive processes they rely on.

  • Craft Sciences
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The field of ‘Craft Sciences’ refers to research conducted across and within different craft subjects and academic contexts. This anthology aims to expose the breadth of topics, source material, methods, perspectives, and results that reside in this field, and to explore what unites the research in such diverse contexts as, for example, the arts, conserva-tion, or vocational craft education. The common thread between each of the chapters in the present book is the augmented attention given to methods—the craft research methods—and to the relationship between the field of inquiry and the field of practice. A common feature is that practice plays an instrumental role in the research found within the chapters, and that the researchers in this publication are also practitioners. The aut-hors are researchers but they are also potters, waiters, carpenters, gardeners, textile artists, boat builders, smiths, building conservators, painting restorers, furniture designers, il-lustrators, and media designers. The researchers contribute from different research fields, like craft education, meal sciences, and conservation crafts, and from particular craft subjects, like boat-building and weaving. The main contribution of this book is that it collects together a number of related case studies and presents a reflection on concepts, perspectives, and methods in the general fields of craft research from the point of view of craft practitioners. It adds to the existing academic discussion of crafts through its wider acknowledgement of craftsmanship and extends its borders and its discourse outside the arts and crafts context. This book provides a platform from which to develop context-appropriate research strategies and to associate with the Craft Sciences beyond the bor-ders of faculties and disciplines.

  • Conditions for experiential knowledge exchange in collaborative research across the sciences and creative practice
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Codesign-International Journal of Cocreation in Design and the Arts. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1571-0882. ; 16:4, s. 328-344
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interdisciplinary research across the sciences and creative practice offers potential to explore new areas of knowledge previously hidden between disciplines. However, diverging epistemology and expectations make collaboration difficult. We interviewed 11 researchers working in projects that combined scientific and creative practice research, to investigate how they dealt with different epistemological approaches. In some cases, the discrepancies that were first experienced as hindrances turned into enablers, opening up new vistas for learning. Our findings show that the prerequisites for experiential knowledge transfer need to be built consciously by engaging in hands-on practices and shared cognitive activities that may extend beyond the personal comfort zone. Furthermore, the common goals and research questions need to be motivating for all involved. Although academic research funding agents encourage interdisciplinary research, funding alone is not sufficient to motivate people to work and truly learn together. By combining different types of knowledge in co-creation processes, participants are able to better share each other's views and construct a multifaceted understanding. An analysis of the interviews suggests how a conscious development of interdisciplinary practice helps educate thinkers and makers to feel comfortable in the unsettling zone between disciplinary boundaries, and thus contribute to innovative research.
