  • A time-resolved proteomic and prognostic map of COVID-19
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cell Systems. - : Elsevier BV. - 2405-4712 .- 2405-4720. ; 12:8, s. 780-794.e7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • COVID-19 is highly variable in its clinical presentation, ranging from asymptomatic infection to severe organ damage and death. We characterized the time-dependent progression of the disease in 139 COVID-19 inpatients by measuring 86 accredited diagnostic parameters, such as blood cell counts and enzyme activities, as well as untargeted plasma proteomes at 687 sampling points. We report an initial spike in a systemic inflammatory response, which is gradually alleviated and followed by a protein signature indicative of tissue repair, metabolic reconstitution, and immunomodulation. We identify prognostic marker signatures for devising risk-adapted treatment strategies and use machine learning to classify therapeutic needs. We show that the machine learning models based on the proteome are transferable to an independent cohort. Our study presents a map linking routinely used clinical diagnostic parameters to plasma proteomes and their dynamics in an infectious disease.

  • Speech Representation in the History of English: Introduction
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Speech Representation in the History of English. - Oxford : Oxford University Press. - 9780190918064 ; , s. 1-28
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter introduces the field of speech representation research. It gives a brief overview of scholarship on speech representation and some crucial concepts in this research field. It identifies three broad core areas that have received substantial attention in previous research—mechanics of speech representation, modes of speech representation, and the sociopragmatics of speech representation—and reviews some of the studies on present-day as well as historical materials within those areas. The authors outline the chapters of this volume, highlighting their contributions to current research. Finally, the chapter suggests a possible program for future research, identifying key topics and general contexts that deserve further attention.

  • Speech Representation in the History of English : Topics and Approaches
  • 2020
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This volume explores the speech representation of the past, comprising in-depth analyses of how speakers and writers mark, structure, and discuss a previous speech event or fictional speech in the history of English. Focusing on the Early Modern English and the Late Modern English periods, the chapters are concerned with topics such as parentheses as markers of represented speech, the development of BE like as a reporting expression, the gradual formation of free indirect speech reporting, and the interpersonal functions of represented speech. Various social contexts and genres are covered, including witness depositions, literary texts, letters, histories, and the spoken language of the recent past. The chapters draw on historical sociolinguistics, historical pragmatics, and corpus linguistics in showing a wide array of approaches to the study of speech representation in the history of English.

  • Free Indirect Speech, Slipping, or a System in Flux Exploring the Continuum between Direct and Indirect Speech in Early Modern English
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Speech Representation in the History of English. - Oxford : Oxford University Press. - 9780190918064 ; , s. 156-182
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter explores speech representation structures in Early Modern English that exhibit a mixture of direct speech and indirect speech. Drawing data from an Electronic Text Edition of Depositions 1560–1760 (ETED), we chart the frequency and characteristics of different types of speech representation that overlap between direct and indirect speech (such as the mixture of third-person and first-person reference, and the use of reporting expression + that + direct speech representation). We show that accounting for such uses as “slipping,” free indirect speech, and/or signs of a system under development is less convincing. Instead, we argue that the mixture should be seen as exploitation of speech representation resources for various sociopragmatic and communicative purposes, such as disambiguating voices and shifting responsibilities for the speech report. The chapter thus contributes to the broader goal of enhancing our understanding of the sociopragmatics of speech representation in the history of English.

  • Saying, crying, replying, and continuing : Speech reporting expressions in Early Modern English
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Voices Past and Present: Studies of Involved, Speech-related and Spoken Texts. - Amsterdam : John Benjamins Publishing Company. - 9789027207654 ; , s. 63-78
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter investigates the form, frequency, and function of speech reporting expressions in Early Modern English, such as quod she in “I perceiue now [$ (quod she) $] how mishap doth follow me” (CED, D1FGASCO, 1573). We focus on the use in the prose fiction texts in Periods 1 and 3 in A Corpus of English Dialogues 1560–1760 (CED). The study points to developments over time, in the distribution of individual verbs as well as groups of verbs with similar functions. Variation is also evident in the word order of the speech reporting expression in relation to the represented speech and in the internal order of the speech reporting expressions (subject+verb or verb+subject).

  • “Speaking base approbious words” : Speech Representation in Early Modern English Witness Depositions
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Historical Pragmatics. - : John Benjamins Publishing Company. - 1566-5852 .- 1569-9854. ; 18:1, s. 1-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the representation of speech in Early Modern English witness depositions. We demonstrate that Semino and Short’s (2004) framework of description, which has for the most part been used in explorations of present-day texts, is generally applicable to our historical data. Our study shows that factors such as the importance of the evidence cited and the clarity of the deposition narrative were crucial considerations in representing speech in different contexts.
