  • A radical constructivist approach to boundaries in business network research
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE INC. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 91, s. 510-520
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We contribute to the business network literature by presenting and introducing a radical constructivist research approach, in which we foreground sharing the context of an actor's understanding of interaction. We elaborate the approach by illuminating the problematic issue of boundaries in business network research. We conceptualize boundaries as inter-action spaces and times where differences are created, maintained and changed in a physical-social setting. We make a distinction between boundaries and borders, with the latter being simply representations. We undertake a review of select realist and social constructivist business network literature to distinguish and elaborate the potential of a radical constructivist perspective, as an alternative approach. The approach appears most useful when the researcher and interview participant do not have a convergent understanding of the research phenomenon. Further, a radical constructivist approach is eminently suitable for settings where inter-action conditions and content are changing, for example in times of crisis or network change. We present the metaphors of castles and frontiers, as illustrative research tools suitable for a radical constructivist study of boundaries in business networks.

  • It runs in the family? : The acquirer’s impact on the business network upon acquisitions of family firms
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reviews the literature on acquisitions of family firms and present central topics in that research ad presents two cases of acquisition of family business. The review reveals that there is still a quite limited amount of research on acquisitions of family firms, and the business network dimension is basically non-existent. The paper points at that most studies focus on the inertia created as family firms are unwilling to divest, while it tells much less about the process following divestment decisions, the impact of new owners, and the network consequences. Contributions are made to the literature on network effects of mergers and acquisitions and to the broader acquisiton literature, where the main focus on large-scale, publicly traded firms’ transactions, mean that family firms constructs a specific setting.

  • Passion and Entrepreneurship : Contemporary Perspectives and New Avenues for Research
  • 2020
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Providing new perspectives on the interface between passion and entrepreneurship, this book recognizes that entrepreneurship is not just based on the search for profit. Instead, the entrepreneurial experience incorporates more complex processes, often based on less rational behavior motivated by reasons other than revenue. ‘Passion’ refers both to emotional elements that may fuel an entrepreneurial effort as well as something that feeds the business. The book challenges established views and shows the complexity of the link between passion and entrepreneurship. The authors discuss the main implications for businesses, and explore how passion at the individual and community level influences entrepreneurial efforts. Offering case studies from multiple sectors alongside conceptual frameworks, this edited volume is a useful tool for scholars, practitioners, and policymakers working on entrepreneurship.

  • A black swan in the district? An IMP perspetive on immigrant entrepreneurship and changes in industrial districts.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: The IMP Journal. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 2059-1403 .- 0809-7259. ; 10:2, s. 243-259
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to discuss the changes of the Italian textile district of Prato, considered an exemplary case of the industrial district (ID) model, using a business network perspective. The "Black Swan" metaphor is used to address the changes in the Prato textile district in order to understand whether such changes have been an unexpected and unpredictable phenomenon, or they can be explain with a different theoretical tool-box, namely, that developed by the industrial network approach. Design/methodology/approach - The paper utilizes already published studies on the changes of the textile/fashion companies located to the Prato area. Both studies that have been carried out within an ID approach and those carried out with an Industrial Marketing and Purchasing (IMP) point of departure are considered in the research. Both types of studies were utilized to identify empirical observed changes of the producer, respectively user setting that the Prato located companies was related to, including identification of changes affecting both the local setting and the larger network it was related to. Findings - The utilization of the IMP model proposes a learning ground that exceed the local context and open ups of investigations of opportunities and threats stemming from interactions across spatial borders. Analysed from an interactive point of view, in the specific context of Prato, the exploitation of the opportunities given by establishing relationship between natives and migrants actors goes through the creation of interactions among actors representing specific resource combinations and activity structures - within and outside the local community. Originality/value - The paper concerns how the same research object - the changes of the Prato district - appears from another perspective different from the ID theory, namely, the industrial network approach developed by scholars of the IMP Group.
