  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Towards Sustainable and Trustworthy 6G: Challenges, Enablers, and Architectural Design. - 9781638282396 ; , s. 40-120
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Compared to its previous generations, the 5th generation (5G) cellular network features an additional type of densification, i.e., a large number of active antennas per access point (AP) can be deployed. This technique is known as massive multipleinput multiple-output (mMIMO) [1]. Meanwhile, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) evolution, e.g., in channel state information (CSI) enhancement, and also on the study of a larger number of orthogonal demodulation reference signal (DMRS) ports for MU-MIMO, was one of the Release 18 of 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP Rel-18) work item. This release (3GPP Rel-18) package approval, in the fourth quarter of 2021, marked the start of the 5G Advanced evolution in 3GPP. The other items in 3GPP Rel-18 are to study and add functionality in the areas of network energy savings, coverage, mobility support, multicast broadcast services, and positioning

  • Distributed MIMO Systems for 6G
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 2023 Joint European Conference on Networks and Communications and 6G Summit, EuCNC/6G Summit 2023. ; , s. 156-161
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study focuses on Distributed MIMO (D-MIMO) systems and provides a discussion about their role in next generation networks. The paradigm shift to distributed networks offers great potential to address the 6G requirements, through macro diversity. As 6G scenarios and use cases continue to emerge, new challenges are likely to arise that may affect the widespread imp-lementation of D-MIMO. To address those, different deployment options have been proposed for roll-out considerations. They are composed of several sub-components that can be categorized as (i) wireless or wired fronthaul/backhaul, (ii) analog or digital signals, (iii) distributed or centralized processing, and (iv) coherent or non-coherent transmission. To facilitate standardization efforts, we provide 3GPP-aligned terminology for network nodes, multi-point transmission and reception schemes. In order to enable large-scale implementation of D-MIMO systems, it is important to determine the needed amount of distribution, develop practical solutions for high-frequency bands, and ways to convey data that meet the transport requirements. On this regard, we discuss key enablers and present simulation results for D-MIMO systems towards 6G. In particular, we present solutions for D-MIMO networks in dynamic scenarios related to channel estimation and layer-l mobility considering coherent and non-coherent joint transmission, and analog fronthaul implementation using analog-radio-over-fiber that are promising for high (upper mm-Wave and (sub-)THz) carrier frequencies, as well as integrated access and backhaul, network-controlled repeaters, and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces that are possible enablers for cost-efficient network densification at both low (cm-Wave, lower mm-Wave) and high carrier frequencies.

  • Constrained Deployment Optimization in Integrated Access and Backhaul Networks
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference, WCNC. - 1525-3511. ; 2023-March
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Integrated access and backhaul (IAB) is one of the promising techniques for 5G networks and beyond (6G), in which the same node/hardware is used to provide both backhaul and cellular services in a multi-hop fashion. Due to the sensitivity of the backhaul links with high rate/reliability demands, proper network planning is needed to make the IAB network performing appropriately and as good as possible. In this paper, we study the effect of deployment optimization on the coverage of IAB networks. We concentrate on the cases where, due to either geographical or interference management limitations, unconstrained IAB node placement is not feasible in some areas. To that end, we propose various millimeter wave (mmWave) blocking-aware constrained deployment optimization approaches. Our results indicate that, even with limitations on deployment optimization, network planning boosts the coverage of IAB networks considerably.

  • Beamforming in Wireless Coded-Caching Systems
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 2023 IEEE Future Networks World Forum: Future Networks: Imagining the Network of the Future, FNWF 2023.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Increased capacity in the access network poses capacity challenges on the transport network due to the aggregated traffic. However, there are spatial and time correlation in the user data demands that could potentially be utilized. To that end, we investigate a wireless transport network architecture that integrates beamforming and coded-caching strategies. Especially, our proposed design entails a server with multiple antennas that broadcasts content to cache nodes responsible for serving users. Traditional caching methods face the limitation of relying on the individual memory with additional overhead. Hence, we develop an efficient genetic algorithm-based scheme for beam optimization in the coded-caching system. By exploiting the advantages of beamforming and coded-caching, the architecture achieves gains in terms of multicast opportunities, interference mitigation, and reduced peak backhaul traffic. A comparative analysis of this joint design with traditional, un-coded caching schemes is also conducted to assess the benefits of the proposed approach. Additionally, we examine the impact of various buffering and decoding methods on the performance of the coded-caching scheme. Our findings suggest that proper beamforming is useful in enhancing the effectiveness of the coded-caching technique, resulting in significant reduction in peak backhaul traffic.

  • Near-Far Field Channel Modeling for Holographic MIMO Using Expectation-Maximization Methods
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference, WCNC. - 1525-3511.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Holographic Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (HMIMO), which densely integrates numerous antennas into a limited space, is anticipated to provide higher rates for future 6G wireless communications. The increase in antenna aperture size makes the near-field region enlarge, causing some users to be located in the near-field region. Thus, we are facing a hybrid near-field and far-field communication problem, where conventional far-field modeling methods may not work well. In this paper, we propose a near-far field channel model that does not presuppose whether each path is near-field or far-field, different from the existing work requiring the ratio of the number of near-field paths to that of far-field paths as prior knowledge. However, this gives rise to a new challenge for accurately modeling the channel, as conventional methods of obtaining channel model parameters are not applicable to this model. Therefore, we propose a new method, Expectation-Maximization (EM)-based Near-Far Field Channel Modeling, to obtain channel model parameters, which considers whether each path is near-field or far-field as a hidden variable, and optimizes the hidden variables and channel model parameters through an alternating iteration method. Simulation results show that our method is superior to conventional near-field and far- field algorithms in fitting the near-far field channel in terms of outage probability.

  • A Comparison of Beam Refinement Algorithms for Millimeter Wave Initial Access
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 28th Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor, and Mobile Radio Communications, IEEE PIMRC'2017 workshop. ; 2017-October
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Initial access (IA) is identified as a key challenge for the upcoming 5G mobile communication system operating at high carrier frequencies, and several techniques are currently being proposed. In this paper, we extend our previously proposed genetic algorithm (GA)-based beam refinement scheme to include beamforming at both the transmitter and the receiver, and compare the performance with alternative approaches in the millimeter wave multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MU-MIMO) networks. Taking the millimeter wave communications characteristics and various metrics into account, we investigate the effect of different parameters such as the number of transmit antennas/users/per-user receive antennas, beamforming resolution as well as hardware impairments on the system performance employing different beam refinement algorithms. As shown, our proposed GA-based approach performs well in delay-constrained networks with multi-antenna users. Compared to the considered state-of-the-art schemes, our method reaches the highest service outage-constrained end-to-end throughput with considerably less implementation complexity. Moreover, taking the users' mobility into account, GA-based approach can remarkably reduce the beam refinement delay at low/moderate speeds when the spatial correlation is taken into account.

  • A Genetic Algorithm-based Beamforming Approach for Delay-constrained Networks
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 15th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks, WiOpt 2017, Paris, France, 15-19 May 2017. ; , s. Article no. 7959905-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we study the performance of initial access beamforming schemes in the cases with large but finite number of transmit antennas and users. Particularly, we develop an efficient beamforming scheme using genetic algorithms. Moreover, taking the millimeter wave communication characteristics and different metrics into account, we investigate the effect of various parameters such as number of antennas/receivers, beamforming resolution as well as hardware impairments on the system performance. As shown, our proposed algorithm is generic in the sense that it can be effectively applied with different channel models, metrics and beamforming methods. Also, our results indicate that the proposed scheme can reach (almost) the same end-to-end throughput as the exhaustive search-based optimal approach with considerably less implementation complexity.

  • A Semi-Linear Approximation of the First-Order Marcum Q-function with Application to Predictor Antenna Systems
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society. - 2644-125X. ; 2, s. 273-286
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • First-order Marcum Q-function is observed in various problem formulations. However, it is not an easy-to-handle function. For this reason, in this paper, we first present a semi-linear approximation of the Marcum Q-function. Our proposed approximation is useful because it simplifies, e.g., various integral calculations including Marcum Q-function as well as different operations such as parameter optimization. Then, as an example of interest, we apply our proposed approximation approach to the performance analysis of predictor antenna (PA) systems. Here, the PA system is referred to as a system with two sets of antennas on the roof of a vehicle. Then, the PA positioned in the front of the vehicle can be used to improve the channel state estimation for data transmission of the receive antenna that is aligned behind the PA. Considering spatial mismatch due to the mobility, we derive closed-form expressions for the instantaneous and average throughput as well as the throughput-optimized rate allocation. As we show, our proposed approximation scheme enables us to analyze PA systems with high accuracy. Moreover, our results show that rate adaptation can improve the performance of PA systems with different levels of spatial mismatch.

  • Electromagnetic Field Exposure Avoidance thanks to Non-Intended User Equipment and RIS
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: GLOBECOM - IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference. - 9781665459754 ; , s. 1537-1542
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • On the one hand, there is a growing demand for high throughput which can be satisfied thanks to the deployment of new networks using massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and beamforming. On the other hand, in some countries or cities, there is a demand for arbitrarily low electromagnetic field exposure (EMFE) of people not concerned by the ongoing communication, which slows down the deployment of new networks. Recently, it has been proposed to take the opportunity, when designing the future 6th generation (6G), to offer, in addition to higher throughput, a new type of service: arbitrarily low EMFE. Recent works have shown that a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), jointly optimized with the base station (BS) beamforming can improve the received throughput at the desired location whilst reducing EMFE everywhere. In this paper, we introduce a new concept of a non-intended user (NIU). An NIU is a user of the network who requests low EMFE when he/she is not downloading/uploading data. An NIU lets his/her device, called NIU equipment (NIUE), exchange some control signaling and pilots with the network, to help the network avoid exposing NIU to waves that are transporting data for another user of the network: the intended user (IU), whose device is called IU equipment (IUE). Specifically, we propose several new schemes to maximize the IU throughput under an EMFE constraint at the NIU (in practice, an interference constraint at the NIUE). Several propagation scenarios are investigated. Analytical and numerical results show that proper power allocation and beam optimization can remarkably boost the EMFE-constrained system's performance with limited complexity and channel information.
