  • Mechanistic Insights into the Coloration, Evolution, and Degradation of NiOx Electrochromic Anodes
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Inorganic Chemistry. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 0020-1669 .- 1520-510X. ; 57:15, s. 8874-8880
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • NiOx is recognized as the leading candidate for smart window anodes that can dynamically modulate optical absorption, thereby achieving energy efficiency in construction buildings. However, the electrochromic mechanism in NiOx is not yet clear, and the ionic species involved are sometimes ambiguous, particularly in aprotic electrolytes. We demonstrate herein that the "net coloration effect" originates from newly generated high-valence Ni3+/Ni4+ ions during anion-dependent anodization, and the Li+ intercalation/deintercalation only plays a role in modulating the oxidation state of Ni. Unambiguous evidences proving the occurrence of anodization reaction were obtained by both chronoamperometry and cyclic voltammetry. Benefiting from the irreversible polarization of Ni2+ to Ni3+/Ni4+, the quantity of voltammetric charge increases by similar to 38% under the same test conditions, enhancing the corresponding electrochromic modulation by similar to 8%. Strong linkages between the coloration, evolution, and degradation observed in this work provide in-depth insights into the electrocatalytic and electrochromic mechanisms.

  • Depletion of carbohydrate reserves limits nitrate uptake during early regrowth in Lolium perenne L.
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Experimental Botany. - : Oxford University Press. - 0022-0957 .- 1460-2431. ; 68:7, s. 1569-1583
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The mechanisms linking C/N balance to N uptake and assimilation are central to plant responses to changing soil nutrient levels. Defoliation and subsequent regrowth of grasses both impact C partitioning, thereby creating a significant point of interaction with soil N availability. Using defoliation as an experimental treatment, we investigated the dynamic relationships between plant carbohydrate status and NO3--responsive uptake systems, transporter gene expression, and nitrate assimilation in Lolium perenne L. High- and low-affinity NO3- uptake was reduced in an N-dependent manner in response to a rapid and large shift in carbohydrate remobilization triggered by defoliation. This reduction in NO3- uptake was rescued by an exogenous glucose supplement, confirming the carbohydrate dependence of NO3- uptake. The regulation of NO3- uptake in response to the perturbation of the plant C/N ratio was associated with changes in expression of putative high- and low-affinity NO3- transporters. Furthermore, NO3- assimilation appears to be regulated by the C-N status of the plant, implying a mechanism that signals the availability of C metabolites for NO3- uptake and assimilation at the whole-plant level. We also show that cytokinins may be involved in the regulation of N acquisition and assimilation in response to the changing plant C/N ratio.

  • Lie Detection Using fNIRS Monitoring of Inhibition-Related Brain Regions Discriminates Infrequent but not Frequent Liars
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Human Neuroscience. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 1662-5161. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to test whether monitoring inhibition-related brain regions is a feasible method for detecting both infrequent liars and frequent liars. Thirty-two participants were divided into two groups: the deceptive group (liars) and the non-deceptive group (ND group, innocents). All the participants were required to undergo a simulated interrogation by a computer. The participants from the deceptive group were instructed to tell a mix of lies and truths and those of the ND group were instructed always to tell the truth. Based on the number of deceptions, the participants of the deceptive group were further divided into a infrequently deceptive group (IFD group, infrequent liars) and a frequently deceptive group (FD group, frequent liars). The infrequent liars exhibited greater neural activities than the frequent liars and the innocents in the left middle frontal gyrus (MFG) when performing the deception detection tasks. While performing deception detection tasks, infrequent liars showed significantly greater neural activation in the left MFG than the baseline, but frequent liars and innocents did not exhibit this pattern of neural activation in any area of inhibition-related brain regions. The results of individual analysis showed an acceptable accuracy of detecting infrequent liars, but an unacceptable accuracy of detecting frequent liars. These results suggest that using fNIRS monitoring of inhibition-related brain regions is feasible for detecting infrequent liars, for whom deception may be more effortful and therefore more physiologically marked, but not frequent liars.

  • First Report on the Occurrence and Bioaccumulation of Hexafluoropropylene Oxide Trimer Acid : An Emerging Concern
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Technology. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 51:17, s. 9553-9560
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Here, we report on the occurrence of a novel perfluoroalkyl ether carboxylic acid, ammonium perfluoro-2-[(propoxy)propoxy]-1-propanoate (HFPO-TA), in surface water and common carp (Cyprinus carpio) collected from the Xiaoqing River and in 'residents residing near a fluoropolymer production plant in Huantai County, China. Compared with the levels upstream of the Xiaoqing River, HFPO-TA concentrations (5200-68500 ng/L) were approximately 120-1600-times higher downstream after receiving fluoropolymer plant effluent from a tributary. The riverine discharge' of HFPO-TA was estimated to be 4.6 t/yr, accounting for 22% of total PFAS discharge. In the wild common carp collected downstream from the point source, HFPO-TA was detected in the blood (median: 1510 ng/mL), liver (587 ng/g ww), and muscle (118 ng/g ww). The log BCFbiood of HFPO-TA (2.18) was significantly higher than that of PFOA (1.93). Detectable levels of HFPO-TA were also found in the sera of residents (median: 2.93 ng/mL). This is the first report on the environmental occurrence and bioaccumulation of this novel chemical. Our results indicate an emerging usage of HFPO-TA in the fluoropolymer manufacturing industry and raise concerns about the toxicity and potential health risks of HFPO-TA to aquatic organisms and humans.

  • Novel Chlorinated Polyfluorinated Ether Sulfonates and Legacy Per-/Polyfluoroalkyl Substances : Placental Transfer and Relationship with Serum Albumin and Glomerular Filtration Rate
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Technology. - Dordrecht, Neteherlands : Springer Netherlands. - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 51:1, s. 634-644
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) may cross the placental barrier and lead to fetal exposure. However, little is known about the factors that influence maternal-fetal transfer of these chemicals. PFAS concentrations were analyzed in 100 paired samples of human maternal sera collected in each trimester and cord sera at delivery; these samples were collected in Wuhan, China, 2014. Linear regression was used to estimate associations of transfer efficiencies with factors. Chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonates (Cl-PFAESs, 6:2 and 8:2) were frequently detected (>99%) in maternal and cord sera. A significant decline in PFAS levels during the three trimesters was observed. A U-shape trend for transfer efficiency with increasing chain length was observed for both carboxylates and sulfonates. Higher transfer efficiencies of PFASs were associated with advancing maternal age, higher education, and lower glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Cord serum albumin was a positive factors for higher transfer efficiency (increased 1.1-4.1% per 1g/L albumin), whereas maternal serum albumin tended to reduce transfer efficiency (decreased 2.4-4.3% per 1g/L albumin). Our results suggest that exposure to Cl-PFAESs may be widespread in China. The transfer efficiencies among different PFASs were structure-dependent. Physiological factors (e.g., GFR and serum albumin) were observed for the first time to play critical roles in PFAS placental transfer.

  • Worldwide Distribution of Novel Perfluoroether Carboxylic and Sulfonic Acids in Surface Water
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Technology. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 52:14, s. 7621-7629
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Driven by increasingly stringent restrictions on long-chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), novel fluorinated compounds have emerged on the market. Here we report on the occurrences of several perfluoroalkyl ether carboxylic and sulfonic acids (PFECAs and PFESAs), including hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer and trimer acids (HFPO-DA and HFPO-TA), ammonium 4,8-dioxa-3 H-perfluorononanoate (ADONA), chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonic acid (6:2 Cl-PFESA), and its hydrogen-substituted analogue (6:2 H-PFESA) in surface waters from China ( n = 106), the United States ( n = 12), the United Kingdom ( n = 6), Sweden ( n = 10), Germany ( n = 14), The Netherlands ( n = 6), and Korea ( n = 6). Results showed that HFPO-DA, HFPO-TA, and 6:2 Cl-PFESA (median = 0.95, 0.21, and 0.31 ng/L, respectively) were frequently detected in all countries, indicating ubiquitous dispersal and distribution in global surface waters. The presence of 6:2 H-PFESA was widely detected in China (detection rate > 95%) but not in any other country. Only trace levels of ADONA (0.013-1.5 ng/L) were detected in the Rhine River flowing through Germany. The estimated total riverine mass discharges of HFPO-DA, HFPO-TA, and ΣPFESAs reached 2.6, 6.0, and 4.3 ton/year in five of the major river systems in China. Our results indicated that novel PFECAs and PFESAs might become global contaminants, and future investigations are warranted.

  • Coordinated nitrogen and carbon remobilization for nitrate assimilation in leaf, sheath and root and associated cytokinin signals during early regrowth of Lolium perenne
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Annals of Botany. - : Oxford University Press. - 0305-7364 .- 1095-8290. ; 119:8, s. 1353-1364
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and Aims The efficiency of N assimilation in response to defoliation is a critical component of plant regrowth and forage production. The aim of this research was to test the effect of the internal C/N balance on NO3- assimilation and to estimate the associated cytokinin signals following defoliation of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. 'Grasslands Nui') plants. Methods Plants, manipulated to have contrasting internal N content and contrasting availability of water soluble carbohydrates (WSCs), were obtained by exposure to either continuous light or short days (8: 16 h light-dark), and watered with modified N-free Hoagland medium containing either high (5 mM) or low (50 mu M) NO3- as sole N source. Half of the plants were defoliated and the root, sheath and leaf tissue were harvested at 8, 24 and 168 h after cutting. The spatiotemporal changes in WSCs, synthesis of amino acids and associated cytokinin content were recorded after cutting. Key Results Leaf regrowth following defoliation involved changes in the low-and high-molecular weight WSCs. The extent of the changes and the partitioning of the WSC following defoliation were dependant on the initial WSC levels and the C and N availability. Cytokinin levels varied in the sheath and root as early as 8 h following defoliation and preceded an overall increase in amino acids at 24 h. Subsequently, negative feedback brought the amino acid response back towards pre-defoliation levels within 168 h after cutting, a response that was under control of the C/N ratio. Conclusions WSC remobilization in the leaf is coordinated with N availability to the root, potentially via a systemic cytokinin signal, leading to efficient N assimilation in the leaf and the sheath tissues and to early leaf regrowth following defoliation.

  • Wear performance of self-glazed zirconia crowns with different amount of occlusal adjustment after 6 months of clinical use
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Advances in Applied Ceramics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1743-6753 .- 1743-6761. ; 117:8, s. 445-451
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The amount of enamel wear on the antagonist occlusal surfaces caused by self-glazed zirconia crowns was compared with that caused by contralateral natural teeth. Thirteen self-glazed zirconia crowns were placed in situ. The impressions of self-glazed zirconia crowns, their antagonists and the control teeth were taken and scanned at baseline and 6-month follow-up. The patients were divided into two groups, the self-glazed crowns in one group were subjected to a large amount of grinding with well polishing (LaP group, n=7), while the other group required a little amount of grinding with well polishing (LiP group, n=6). Statistics were analysed by two-sided paired Student's t-tests to a significance level of p<.05. The results revealed that the maximum and mean enamel wear significantly different between the antagonists of self-glazed crowns and the control teeth (p<.05). Increased amount of enamel wear was found in LaP group (p<.05). The self-glazed zirconia crowns caused more enamel wear of antagonists than natural teeth after 6 months. Occlusal adjustment and polishing were considered as possible confounders which affected wear behaviour.

  • Annual CO2 and CH4 fluxes in coastal earthen ponds with Litopenaeus vannamei in southeastern China
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Aquaculture. - : ELSEVIER. - 0044-8486 .- 1873-5622. ; 545
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Small-scale aquaculture operation is being increasing practised around the world, particularly in the developing countries, but the greenhouse gas (GHG) dynamics and fluxes from small aquaculture ponds are still poorly assessed. In this study, the dissolved concentrations and fluxes of CO2 and CH4 were determined in three coastal earthen shrimp ponds over one whole year, covering both the farming and non-farming periods, in the Min River Estuary, southeastern China. Both ebullitive and diffusive CH4 fluxes were measured, which were rarely done in previous studies. The average concentrations of dissolved CO2 and CH4 in water column in the farming period varied between 18.1 +/- 0.1 and 79.6 +/- 1.1 mu mol L-1, and 1.3 +/- 0.1 and 55.9 +/- 3.2 mu mol L-1, respectively. When averaged across the whole year, the mean CO2 and CH4 fluxes from the ponds were - 18.4 +/- 7.4 and 22.6 +/- 6.9 mg m- 2 h-1, respectively, suggesting that the shrimp ponds acted as a CO2 sink and a CH4 source. Based on the sustained-flux global warming potential (SGWP) and sustained-flux global cooling potential (SGCP) models, the annual warming potential was estimated to be 7.1 x 103 g CO2-eq m- 2 yr- 1, with approximately 90% of this arising from the farming period. Ebullition was the dominant emission pathway for CH4, accounting for over 90% of the total CH4 emission during the farming period. This full-year study improves our understanding of carbon cycling in coastal aquaculture ponds and provides a scientific basis for updating the GHG inventories.
