  • Consensus in distributed soft environments
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Operational Research. - : Elsevier. - 0377-2217 .- 1872-6860. ; 61:1-2, s. 165-185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies the problem of formalizing consensus reaching within a set of decision makers trying to find and agree upon a mutual decision. Decision makers produce their individual rankings, using their own pet decision schemas. Thus consensus reaching relies only on the aggregation of individual decisions rather than on individual decision procedures. The aggregation of the individual rankings is supported by an advising monitor which tries to contract the decision makers into a mutual decision through soft enforcement. Convergence to consensus then depends upon the decision makers' willingness to compromise. We use a topological approach to consensus where we can measure distances between decision makers. Within the approach we can also model the trade-off between a degree of consensus and a strength of majority.

  • Ceramide as a TLR4 agonist; a putative signalling intermediate between sphingolipid receptors for microbial ligands and TLR4.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Cellular Microbiology. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1462-5814 .- 1462-5822. ; 9:5, s. 1239-1251
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mucosal Toll-like receptors (TLRs) respond to pathogens, but remain inert to the indigenous flora, suggesting that the TLRs can receive pathogen-specific signals. For example, TLR4 signalling is activated in CD14-negative epithelial cells by P-fimbriated, uropathogenic Escherichia coli, but not by lipopolysaccharide. The fimbriae use glycosphingolipids as recognition receptors and there is release of ceramide, which is the membrane-anchoring domain of the receptors. In this study, ceramide was identified as a TLR4 agonist and as a putative signalling intermediate between the glycosphingolipid recognition receptors and TLR4. Exogenous ceramide activated a TLR4-dependent epithelial cell response, as shown by exposing stably transfected TLR4-positive or -negative human embryonal kidney cells to C2 and C6 ceramide. A similar, TLR4-dependent response occurred after deliberate release of endogenous long-chained ceramide with sphingomyelinase. Microbial ligands with glycosphingolipid specificity (P fimbriae or the B subunit of Shiga toxin) were shown to increase the levels of ceramide and to trigger a TLR4-dependent response in epithelial cells. The results show that ceramide activates TLR4 signalling and suggest that this mechanism might allow pathogens to elicit mucosal TLR4 responses by perturbing sphingolipid receptors for virulence ligands like P fimbriae.

  • Annotating public fungal ITS sequences from the built environment according to the MIxS-Built Environment standard – a report from a May 23-24, 2016 workshop (Gothenburg, Sweden)
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: MycoKeys. - : Pensoft Publishers. - 1314-4057 .- 1314-4049. ; 16, s. 1-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent molecular studies have identified substantial fungal diversity in indoor environments. Fungi and fungal particles have been linked to a range of potentially unwanted effects in the built environment, including asthma, decay of building materials, and food spoilage. The study of the built mycobiome is hampered by a number of constraints, one of which is the poor state of the metadata annotation of fungal DNA sequences from the built environment in public databases. In order to enable precise interrogation of such data – for example, “retrieve all fungal sequences recovered from bathrooms” – a workshop was organized at the University of Gothenburg (May 23-24, 2016) to annotate public fungal barcode (ITS) sequences according to the MIxS-Built Environment annotation standard (http://gensc.org/mixs/). The 36 participants assembled a total of 45,488 data points from the published literature, including the addition of 8,430 instances of countries of collection from a total of 83 countries, 5,801 instances of building types, and 3,876 instances of surface-air contaminants. The results were implemented in the UNITE database for molecular identification of fungi (http://unite.ut.ee) and were shared with other online resources. Data obtained from human/animal pathogenic fungi will furthermore be verified on culture based metadata for subsequent inclusion in the ISHAM-ITS database (http://its.mycologylab.org).

  • A digital nervous system aiming toward personalized IoT healthcare
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : NATURE RESEARCH. - 2045-2322. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Body area networks (BANs), cloud computing, and machine learning are platforms that can potentially enable advanced healthcare outside the hospital. By applying distributed sensors and drug delivery devices on/in our body and connecting to such communication and decision-making technology, a system for remote diagnostics and therapy is achieved with additional autoregulation capabilities. Challenges with such autarchic on-body healthcare schemes relate to integrity and safety, and interfacing and transduction of electronic signals into biochemical signals, and vice versa. Here, we report a BAN, comprising flexible on-body organic bioelectronic sensors and actuators utilizing two parallel pathways for communication and decision-making. Data, recorded from strain sensors detecting body motion, are both securely transferred to the cloud for machine learning and improved decision-making, and sent through the body using a secure body-coupled communication protocol to auto-actuate delivery of neurotransmitters, all within seconds. We conclude that both highly stable and accurate sensing-from multiple sensors-are needed to enable robust decision making and limit the frequency of retraining. The holistic platform resembles the self-regulatory properties of the nervous system, i.e., the ability to sense, communicate, decide, and react accordingly, thus operating as a digital nervous system.

  • Discrete-time Solutions to the Continuous-time Differential Lyapunov Equation With Applications to Kalman Filtering
  • 2012
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Prediction and filtering of continuous-time stochastic processes  require a solver of a continuous-time differential Lyapunov equation (CDLE).   Even though this can be recast into an ordinary differential equation (ODE),  where standard solvers can be applied, the dominating approach in  Kalman filter applications is to discretize the system and then  apply the discrete-time difference Lyapunov equation (DDLE). To avoid problems with  stability and poor accuracy, oversampling is often used. This  contribution analyzes over-sampling strategies, and proposes a  low-complexity analytical solution that does not involve  oversampling. The results are illustrated on Kalman filtering  problems in both linear and nonlinear systems.

  • Extended Kalman Filter Applied to Industrial Manipulators
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Reglermöte 2010.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper summarizes previous work on tool position estimation on industrial manipulators, and emphasize the problems that must be taken care of in order to get a satisfied result. The acceleration of the robot tool, measured by an accelerometer, together with measurements of motor angles are used. The states are estimated with an extended Kalman filter. A method for tuning the covariance matrices for the noise, used in the observer, is suggested. The work has been focused on a robot with two degrees of freedom.
