  • Experiences of endocrine therapy after breast cancer surgery
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Annals of Oncology. Abstract Book of the 44th ESMO Congress (ESMO 2019) 27 September – 1 October 2019, Barcelona, Spain. Vol. 30, Suppl. 5, s. v840. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-7534.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background For patients diagnosed with hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer, endocrine therapy (ET) is prescribed, which reduces recurrence and mortality rates (Early Breast Cancer Trialists’ Collaborative Group, 2011). Despite the prognostic benefits of ET, the adherence to treatment varies, and 30%–70% of the patients discontinue their treatment within five years (Daly et al., 2017; Tinari et al., 2015; Ursem et al., 2015), often during their first year of treatment (He et al., 2015), due to the fact that ET is associated with adverse side-effects (Regan et al., 2011). Methods The study was conducted in a surgical out-patient care unit at a hospital in Sweden. Inclusion criteria were women diagnosed with breast cancer and treated with ET after surgery. Forty-eight patients were invited to participate, of which 23 declined, thus 25 women were included. Seven focus group interviews, with two to five participants in each group, were conducted using an interview guide according to Krueger’s (2014) strategy. The interview guide contained six open-ended questions aiming to explore the women’s experiences of ET after breast cancer surgery. Inductive qualitative content analysis was used (Graneheim & Lundman, 2004). Results The analysis resulted in three categories that described the women’s experiences: the treatment “creates discomfort”; “promotes levels of management”; and “causes feelings of abandonment”. Women’s experiences of treatment could at first glance be seen as positive, as perceived protection, but after further analysis, a deeper meaning was identified: protection with reservation. When experiencing discomfort, the women were urged to manage the situation, although the mode of management sometimes varied. The women reported that they needed support, but when the support did not appear, they felt as though they had been abandoned. Moreover, knowledge about side-effects became an obstacle. The participants described feeling abandoned, but they also described their disease as “cancer light”. Conclusions Professionals need to explore the pre-knowledge and preconceptions that patients might have. This could be achieved by listening to the patient before providing them with information. The information needs to be customized specifically to each person. Funding Assar Gabrielsson’s Foundation, Herbert and Karin Jacobsson’s Foundation, and the Swedish Society of Nursing. • “It is not just any pill”—Women’s experiences of endocrine therapy after breast cancer surgery
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cancer Care. - : Hindawi Limited. - 0961-5423 .- 1365-2354. ; 28:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: For patients diagnosed with hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer, endocrine therapy (ET) is usually prescribed to reduce recurrence and mortality rates. Despite the benefits, compliance with treatment varies. The aim of this study was to provide qualitative data about women's experiences with ET after breast cancer surgery. Methods: Twenty-five women, treated with Tamoxifen after breast cancer surgery, were interviewed in seven focus groups. Six open-ended questions were used to explore their experiences. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using inductive content analysis. Results: The analysis resulted in three categories that described the women's experiences: the treatment “creates discomfort”; “promotes levels of management”; and “causes feelings of abandonment”. Women's experiences of treatment could at first glance be seen as positive, as perceived protection, but after further analysis, a deeper meaning was identified: protection with reservation. When experiencing discomfort, the women tried to manage the situation, although the mode of management sometimes varied. The women reported that they needed support, but when the support did not appear, they felt as though they had been abandoned. Moreover, knowledge about side effects became an obstacle, as it could create fear of more severe symptoms. They also described that their disease was perceived by healthcare professionals as “cancer light”. Conclusion: The information needs to be customised specifically to each person. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons Ltd

  • Women’s coping strategies during the first three months of adjuvant endocrine therapy for breast cancer
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nursing Open. - : Wiley. - 2054-1058. ; 7:2, s. 605-612
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract Aim: The aim was to explore stressful events, experienced problems and used coping strategies during the first three months of undergoing ET. Design: This study used a mixed method design. Methods: A consecutive sample of 39 women newly diagnosed with breast cancer were included at the start of their adjuvant endocrine therapy. A daily coping assessment was used to create daily reports about stressful events or experienced problems and coping strategies. Results: The most frequently reported physical problems were sleeping difficulties. Anxiety was the most reported emotional problem. Patients used both emotion-and problem-focused coping, and sleeping difficulties were coped by relaxing, and anxiety was coped by thinking about something else. Conclusions: Patients experienced a variety of stressful events or problems during the first three months of endocrine therapy. They also used several coping strategies to endure the treatment.

  • How do international norms travel? : Women’s political rights in Cambodia and Timor-Leste
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • How do international norms travel, via statebuilding efforts, into post-conflict settings, and how do international and national actors interact in this process? These are the main questions addressed in this thesis. The empirical focus is the spreading and rooting of the norm of women’s political rights in Cambodia and Timor-Leste, two countries in which international actors have played a significant role in statebuilding efforts. Although statebuilding has increasingly become a part of UN peacebuilding missions, we still lack a thorough understanding of how much, and in what ways, the international community can successfully promote change. This is important in view of the fact that the key to success ultimately depends on how the receiving community responds to the presence and efforts of international actors to promote new social norms.  This study analyzes the interaction between international and national actors engaged in the promotion of women’s political rights as part of the effort to advance democracy. Three institutional developments are examined in detail – electoral rules and regulations, the establishment of a national gender equality/women’s machinery and the strengthening of the local government structure. The study uses a modified norm diffusion approach and makes two theoretical contributions to the literature. First, I place the norm diffusion process in a post-conflict context. Second, I add the concept of capability to function in order to conceptualize and study the internalization of the norm. The thesis is based on both an analysis of written material and semi-structured interviews. A total of 65 interviews were conducted during three research trips to each of the countries between 2007 and 2009. In general, the four empirical chapters reveal that the interaction between international and national actors has predominantly been characterized by international actors setting the agenda, with varying degrees of consultation and collaboration with national actors. While norm institutionalization has been rather high in both countries, norm internalization lags behind. This is explained by discriminating ways of life and attitudes, lack of resources and time. Norm internalization is higher in Timor-Leste, in part because national actors have adapted the norm of women’s political rights to fit the local setting, but also due to their openness to international influences. The empirical study underscores that international actors can push for change and norm adherence, but their efforts are not enough. In the end, national actors have to buy into the message that international actors try to convey. The strengths and weaknesses that have been uncovered in the Cambodian and Timorese case studies presented here should be carefully considered as international actors, led by the UN, embark upon future statebuilding missions around the globe.

  • Analys av polisens alkoholutandningsprov i fem län åren 2001-2003
  • 2007
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The extent and results of the police breathalyser tests in Stockholm, Västerbotten, Östergötland, Skåne and Västra Götaland Counties over the period 2001-2003 have been analysed. The primary aim is to uncover and describe shortcomings in existing data, not to estimate the extent of drink driving. The analysis has been made with reference to the codes applied by the police to describe the type of control at which the test was made. These codes are - 0) Police initiated driver control - 1) "Random" control (not random in the strict statistical sense) - 2) Control because of a road traffic accident - 3) Targeted control (e.g. at strategically selected points such as shops selling alcoholic drinks) - 4) Other codes - It is mainly the breathalyser tests coded by the police as 0, 1 and 3 that are examined in the analysis. The other codes appear very rarely in the controls made.

  • Predictors of Well-being at work
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Scientific Programme.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of healthy workplace has been defined as an organization that maximizes the integration of worker goals for wellbeing and company objectives for profitability and productivity. Conditions in today’s working life make new approaches necessary in order to limit negative health effects of work and to enhance wellbeing and health at work. About 24 % of the working population in Sweden report to have had work-related disorders during the last twelve months. In order to achieve a sustainable working life it is likely that strategies and actions from different and new angles are needed.ObjectivesThe present study is a part of a larger study (the GodA –study; a Swedish acronym for good work environments and healthy workplaces) and aims to investigate how work environment factors, work ability, work motivation, work and life balance predict well-being at work.MethodsThe GodA study is a 2-year follow up study in Sweden with a survey feedback design in three companies with both blue- and white collar workers. One of the companies serves as “intervention-company”, the other two as controls. A baseline questionnaire was sent out 2013 and the results from the survey were reported back to the companies, which have been processing their results. In spring 2015 a follow up survey has been administered. Data have been analysed with univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses.ResultsA baseline multivariate linear regression model, which included background factors, perceived psychosocial work climate and work environmental factors (motivation, leadership, employee responsibilities, efficacy, work ability and management committed to employee health) and work life balance, showed that psychosocial work climate (B= .48, 95% CI=.27 – .69) leadership, (B= .27, 95% CI=.05– .49), work ability (B= -.12, 95% CI= .03 – .21), motivation (B= -33, 95% CI= .14 – .51) and work life balance (B= -.34, 95% CI=-.57– -.12), were signifi-cantly associated with well-being at work and explained 40% of the variance (Adjusted R2=.40, p<.001).ConclusionsResults showed that not only work environment factors are important predictors. To maintain a healthy work place a promotion of balance between work and private life is needed.

  • Barn i bil - socioekonomiska faktorer : litteratur- och enkätstudie
  • 2003
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to identify relationships between no use/misuse of safety belt/child restraints and socio-economic aspects. The conclusions from the study will provide a basis for the future development of information and campaigns to increase the correct use of restraints. The study consisted of two parts: a literature review and a questionnaire. The questionnaire was sent to a random sample of 2,010 parents of children aged 2 months–9 years. The response rate was about 70 per cent. The level of misuse among small children was lower than among older children and lower in the family car compared with the overall situation. Parents who neglected to use the safety belts themselves were more likely to be careless in ensuring that the child used recommended restraint. The results also indicated that parents who were more likely to act in contradiction with rules and recommendation concerning use of restraints were also more likely to allow their children to travel without safety belts.
