  • Tocopherols in rose hips (Rosa spp.) during ripening
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture. - : Wiley. - 0022-5142 .- 1097-0010. ; 92, s. 2116-2121
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Rose hips are used as a food ingredient and in health products. They are rich in various bioactive compounds such as carotenoids and vitamin C, but data on their vitamin E content (tocopherols and tocotrienols) are limited. In this study, four different species ofRosa were analysed for tocopherol and tocotrienol content during ripening in three different years. RESULTS: Only a- and ?-tocopherol were found in the fleshy parts of the rose hips, and the tocopherol content and vitamin E activity varied depending on date of harvesting, species and year. The amount of vitamin E activity differed between species of Rosa and years, whereas the changes during ripening were relatively small. CONCLUSION: The choice of species must be considered if tocopherol content is to be optimised when rose hips are used as a food ingredient. Copyright (C) 2012 Society of Chemical Industry

  • Performance and Tribofilm Formation of a Low-Friction Coating Incorporating Inorganic Fullerene Like Nano-Particles
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new tribological coating with potential as a coating for components for low-friction applications is tested and compared to three, state of the art, commercial low-friction PVD coatings. The new coating is an electrodeposited coating composed by a Ni-P matrix incorporating fullerene like nanoparticles of WS2. The performance of the new coating is compared with three reference coatings in a ball-on-disc setup. The tribological tests involved ball bearing steel balls slid on coated discs, under different conditions of humidity and also with or without oil lubrication. Both mating surfaces were closely investigated in a scanning electron microscope and the low-friction tribofilms formed were further analysed. The correlations found between coefficient of friction, surface roughness of the wear scar, tribofilm formation and contact conditions are discussed. The new coating exhibits a very low coefficient of friction at low humidity, a behaviour closely resembling that of the MoS2-based commercial reference, whereas the carbon based PVD coatings tested exhibit the reversed dependence of humidity. The low-friction behaviour of the new coating is correlated to the formation of a WS2 tribofilm with a superficial alignment of the basal planes parallel to the sliding direction. When lubricated with a base oil, the beneficial tribofilm is not formed and the coefficient of friction is much higher. The results show that even though the coating is an electrodeposited coating it can compete with state of the art commercial PVD coatings.

  • Tumor-growth-promoting cyclooxygenase-2 prostaglandin E2 pathway provides medulloblastoma therapeutic targets
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Neuro-Oncology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1522-8517 .- 1523-5866. ; 10:5, s. 661-674
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) has been shown to play important roles in several aspects of tumor development and progression. PGE(2) is synthesized from arachidonic acid by cyclooxygenases (COX) and prostaglandin E synthases (PGES) and mediates its biological activity through binding to the four prostanoid receptors EP(1) through EP(4). In this study, we show for the first time that medulloblastoma (MB), the most common malignant childhood brain tumor, expresses high levels of COX-2, microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1, and EP(1) through EP(4) and secretes PGE(2). PGE(2) and the EP(2) receptor agonist butaprost stimulated MB cell proliferation. Treatment of MB cells with COX inhibitors suppressed PGE(2) production and induced caspase-dependent apoptosis. Similarly, specific COX-2 silencing by small interfering RNA inhibited MB cell growth. EP(1) and EP(3) receptor antagonists ONO-8713 and ONO-AE3-240, but not the EP(4) antagonists ONO-AE3-208 and AH 23848, inhibited tumor cell proliferation, indicating the significance of EP(1) and EP(3) but not EP(4) for MB growth. Administration of COX inhibitors at clinically achievable nontoxic concentrations significantly inhibited growth of established human MB xenografts. Apoptosis was increased, proliferation was reduced, and angiogenesis was inhibited in MBs treated with COX inhibitors. This study suggests that PGE(2) is important for MB growth and that therapies targeting the prostanoid metabolic pathway are potentially beneficial and should be tested in clinical settings for treatment of children with MB.

  • Om folkhögskolans dynamik : Möten mellan olika bildningsprojekt
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study is describing the projects of Bildung which are possible to identify with the students and the teachers at two folk high schools and the meeting between those projects in the classrooms. Another purpose is to describe and analyze processes, which arise when teachers, students and folk high school as an institution come together. As a background and part of the study, connected to the central concept of the thesis - power and Bildung - is an account of the projects of Bildung which have been developed within the folk high school in a historical perspective. It is the generally oriented course and the students that are in focus. The study is part of an ethnographic research tradition and the empirical part of the study consists of a combination of qualitative interviews with the teachers and the students and participant observation. The projects of Bildung, which I have found represented by the students are “selfeducation” with the subgroups "self-development" and "self-rehabilitation" and "the project of qualification". Most of the teachers try to establish an attitude that has a self-educational direction but gradually the teachers are forced to let the qualification project get a more prominent part in the teaching. The projects of Bildung are changing and are in contrast to each other, sometimes in harmony and sometimes out of balance. I found that the study setting could be characterized by manifoldness and dynamics. A pluralism resulting in challenges and different processes.

  • Disease Burden and Healthcare Costs for T2D Patients With and Without Established Cardiovascular Disease in Sweden: A Retrospective Cohort Study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Diabetes Therapy. - : SPRINGER HEIDELBERG. - 1869-6953 .- 1869-6961. ; 11:7, s. 1537-1549
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IntroductionType 2 diabetes (T2D) is a complex chronic disease with an increasing prevalence worldwide. It is commonly associated with complications, such as cardiovascular disease (CVD). Patients with both T2D and established CVD are exposed to increased risk of further cardiovascular events, which means increased healthcare costs and impairments to quality of life and survival. To determine the added burden of CVD for T2D patients, we have analyzed the consumption and costs of healthcare and mortality in two T2D patient cohorts, with and without established CVD, respectively, during a 5-year follow-up in a Swedish region.MethodsPatients with T2D on 1 January 2012 were identified using the administrative database of Region ostergotland and the Swedish National Diabetes Register. Established CVD was defined as the presence of a CVD-related healthcare visit in the period 2002-2011. Identified T2D patients were then followed retrospectively for 5 years (2012-2016) and data collected on utilization of healthcare resources, healthcare costs, and survival. Data pertinent to the study were retrieved from regional databases and national registries.ResultsOn the index date (1 January 2012) there were 19,731 patients with T2D (prevalence 4.5%) in Region ostergotland, of whom 5490 had established CVD. Those patients with established CVD were older, more often men, and had longer diabetes duration and worse kidney function than those without. Compared to T2D patients without CVD, those with CVD had a significantly higher healthcare consumption, experienced higher costs, and had lower survival during the follow-up.ConclusionThis study confirms that established CVD is common among patients with T2D (approximately 30%). Established CVD has negative effects on the utilization of healthcare resources, healthcare costs, and mortality. It is therefore very important to improve the treatment strategy of this patient group.

  • Implementation of Empagliflozin in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 and Established Cardiovascular Disease : Estimation of 5-Year Survival and Costs in Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Diabetes Therapy. - : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 1869-6953 .- 1869-6961. ; 11, s. 2921-2930
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IntroductionCardiovascular disease (CVD) affects approximately 30% of patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2D) and leads to increased morbidity, decreased survival and increased healthcare utilization. The aim of this study was to estimate the impact of treating these patients with the sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor empagliflozin on survival and healthcare utilization.MethodsActual survival and healthcare utilization data from a 5-year retrospective cohort study on patients with T2D and CVD in the Region of Östergötland, Sweden were used as a starting point. Actual data were adjusted in accordance with risk reductions for mortality and CV events related to empagliflozin treatment as reported in the EMPA-REG OUTCOME study.ResultsApplying the risk reductions related to empagliflozin treatment on the cohort of patients with T2D and CVD in Östergötland resulted in an increase in 5-year survival of 96 days per patient and reduced costs for healthcare and drugs other than empagliflozin. Including the cost of empagliflozin, treatment led to an increased net cost per patient of approximately SEK 18,000 over 5 years.ConclusionEmpagliflozin treatment would reduce mortality and healthcare utilization in the patient group. The treatment strategy should be considered cost-effective, supporting a broad implementation of empagliflozin for patients with T2D and established CVD, in line with current national and international guidelines.
