  • Vältalighetens dubbla ansikte : Två svenska 1600-talsorationer om talekonstens politiska användning: Text – kontext – intertext. Inledning Nils Ekedahl. Textinledning, utgåva och översättning Annika Ström
  • 2023. - 1
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Här presenteras två latinska orationer, hållna i Uppsala 1654.

  • Variance reduction methods for numerical solution of plasma kinetic diffusion
  • 2012
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Performing detailed simulations of plasma kinetic diffusion is a challenging task and currently requires the largest computational facilities in the world. The reason for this is that, the physics in a confined heated plasma occur on a broad range of temporal and spatial scales. It is therefore of interest to improve the computational algorithms together with the development of more powerful computational resources. Kinetic diffusion processes in plasmas are commonly simulated with the Monte Carlo method, where a discrete set of particles are sampled from a distribution function and advanced in a Lagrangian frame according to a set of stochastic differential equations. The Monte Carlo method introduces computational error in the form of statistical random noise produced by a finite number of particles (or markers) N and the error scales as αN−β where β = 1/2 for the standard Monte Carlo method. This requires a large number of simulated particles in order to obtain a sufficiently low numerical noise level. Therefore it is essential to use techniques that reduce the numerical noise. Such methods are commonly called variance reduction methods. In this thesis, we have developed new variance reduction methods with application to plasma kinetic diffusion. The methods are suitable for simulation of RF-heating and transport, but are not limited to these types of problems. We have derived a novel variance reduction method that minimizes the number of required particles from an optimization model. This implicitly reduces the variance when calculating the expected value of the distribution, since for a fixed error the  optimization model ensures that a minimal number of particles are needed. Techniques that reduce the noise by improving the order of convergence, have also been considered. Two different methods have been tested on a neutral beam injection scenario. The methods are the scrambled Brownian bridge method and a method here called the sorting and mixing method of L´ecot and Khettabi[1999]. Both methods converge faster than the standard Monte Carlo method for modest number of time steps, but fail to converge correctly for large number of time steps, a range required for detailed plasma kinetic simulations. Different techniques are discussed that have the potential of improving the convergence to this range of time steps.

  • An Enterprise Architecture Based Method for Quantified Analysis of IT System Impact on Maintenance Management
  • 2009
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a method for quantified analysis of the impact ICT systems have on maintenance management. The method is based on Enterprise Architecture (EA) which is a model based tool enabling holistic management of an enterprise?s ICT system portfolio and its relation and support to the business. A domain where the relation between ICT systems and business processes is crucial for cost efficient operation is maintenance of asset intensive geographically distributed processes, such as distribution of electric power. Power utilities invest many monetary resources in maintenance, a large proportion of these investments being related to development and integration of ICT systems. Thus, there is a need for the power utilities to understand how the products of these investments influence the performance of the maintenance process. The degree of efficiency of these investments runs a risk of being low unless there is a clear understanding of how specific ICT system solutions affects the maintenance activities. The suggested method combines EA with the Maintenance Scorecard and introduces Extended Influence Diagrams (EIDs) to enable a quantitative analysis of how cause and effect between ICT systems and the performance of maintenance processes are related to each other. The method provides management support for rationale decisions concerning ICT systemsï¿œ support of the domain of maintenance management. The paper is concluded with an example of how the method can be applied to a typical maintenance process within an electric power utility

  • Environmental stress during larval development induces DNA methylation shifts in the migratory painted lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Molecular Ecology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0962-1083 .- 1365-294X. ; 32:13, s. 3513-3523
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Seasonal environmental fluctuations provide formidable challenges for living organisms, especially small ectotherms such as butterflies. A common strategy to cope with harsh environments is to enter diapause, but some species avoid unsuitable conditions by migrating. Despite a growing understanding of migration in the life cycles of some butterfly species, it remains unknown how individuals register and store environmental cues to determine whether and where to migrate. Here, we explored how competition and host plant availability during larval development affect patterns of DNA methylation in the migratory painted lady (Vanessa cardui) butterfly. We identify a set of potentially functional methylome shifts associated with differences in the environment, indicating that DNA methylation is involved in the response to different conditions during larval development. By analysing the transcriptome for the same samples used for methylation profiling, we also uncovered a non-monotonic relationship between gene body methylation and gene expression. Our results provide a starting point for understanding the interplay between DNA methylation and gene expression in butterflies in general and how differences in environmental conditions during development can trigger unique epigenetic marks that might be important for behavioural decisions in the adult stage.

  • Post-operative effects on insulin resistance and specific tension of single skeletal muscle fibres
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Clinical Science. - : Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. - 0143-5221 .- 1470-8736. ; 97:4, s. 449-455
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Surgery and accidental trauma are associated with a transient period of insulin resistance, substrate catabolism and muscle weakness. In the present study, we evaluated the changes in the force-generating capacity of chemically skinned single muscle fibresfollowing abdominal surgery. Biopsies of the m. vastus lateralis were obtained in three patients 1 day before and 3 or 6 days after surgery. Part of the biopsy was frozen for histochemical analysis of the fibre cross-sectional area (FCSA) and myofibrillar protein content, and another part was used for single-fibre contractile measurements. All patients developed insulin resistance following surgery. The maximum velocity of unloaded shortening of single muscle fibres did not change following surgery. The FCSA did not decrease after surgery, as determined either from histochemical sections or from singlefibres measured at a fixed sarcomere length of 2.76+/-0.09 microm (mean+/-S.D.). Further, the force-generating capacity of the single fibres, measured as maximal Ca(2+)-activated force (P(0)) or as P(0) normalized to FCSA (specific tension), remained unchanged, as did the myofibrillar protein content of the muscle. In conclusion, the muscle weakness associated with post-operative insulin resistance is not related to a decreased specifictension or a loss of myofibrillar proteins. Other potential cellular mechanisms underlying post-operative weakness are discussed.

  • Building Code Compliance for Off-Site Construction
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Legal Affairs and Dispute Resolution in Engineering and Construction. - : American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). - 1943-4162 .- 1943-4170. ; 15:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are increasing concerns over building code, regulation compliance, and quality assurance issues in adopting off-site construction techniques in the construction industry related to meeting client expectations and regulatory requirements. Performance-based building regulations often allow for space for innovation but not a safe space for those who intend to introduce new construction techniques not prescribed in building regulations. Through a series of surveys conducted in Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, China, Singapore, and Australia, this study identified approaches and practices used in these countries that overcome compliance challenges when off-site construction techniques are used. The findings showed that manufacturer self-certification is the predominant approach for meeting code compliance requirements. A fit-for-purpose regulatory compliance system also warrants fair allocation of risks and liabilities to anyone involved in the supply chain. However, a healthy and functional regulatory system for off-site compliance requires third-party certification for products and factories and traceability. It is hoped that the lessons learned from this study can help policymakers introduce changes in product standards and legislation in order to improve the compliance and performance of off-site construction. This study concluded that a chain of custody approach is necessary in order to address quality concerns surrounding the adoption of prefabrication technology in countries that are increasingly exploring greater use of manufacturing in construction.

  • Phospholipid vesicle adsorption measured in situ with resonating cantilevers in a liquid cell
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 16:9, s. 1512-1516
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A liquid-cell-based cantilever sensor system operating in the dynamic mode has been developed and characterized, and the frequency spectra of commercial micrometre-scale silicon cantilevers in aqueous solutions have been studied. We report data demonstrating measurements of the resonance frequency shift induced upon phospholipid vesicle adsorption on an oscillating cantilever immersed in a liquid. A resonance frequency shift corresponding to an added mass of 450 pg has been measured, which is in good agreement with the estimated mass of 400 pg. In addition, the effect of varying the liquid volume in the cell on the frequency response has been investigated.

  • A dielectric response model for FEM solutions of ICRF wave fields
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics, Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 401:1, s. 012009-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modelling of fast wave ICRF heating in large machines with high density such as DEMO is challenging because of the short wave lengths. Therefore, fast, efficient global wave solvers are necessary. A major difficulty with calculating the wave field in a spatial dispersive medium is that the dielectric tensor becomes a function of the local wave vector, which in its turn depends on the solution. Furthermore, the solution may consist of several waves co-existing at the same location subjected to separate response functions. In order to model upshift of the parallel wave vector, higher order FLR-effects on the cyclotron absorption and TTMP damping for the electron absorption methods based on iteration, suitable for FEM codes, are proposed.

  • A model for self-consistent simulation of ICRH suitable for integrating modelling
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 53:9, s. 093004-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A self-consistent modelling of ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) is reviewed with the aim of obtaining a fast robust scheme suitable for routine simulation for transport codes and data analysis. Due to the complexity of calculating the wave field and the distribution function self-consistently simplifications are necessary. To improve modelling of the wave field, methods are developed to include higher order finite Larmor radius terms, up-and downshifts of the parallel wave number and to improve calculations of damping due to the transit time magnetic pumping in finite element wave codes without decomposing the wave locally into planar waves. A new code, SELFO-light, for self-consistent modelling of ion cyclotron heating suitable for routine calculations is developed. The code is based on coupling the global wave code LION with a simple one-dimensional time-dependent Fokker-Planck code. Both the wave and the Fokker-Planck codes use finite element representations. The importance of self-consistent modelling of ion cyclotron heating is illustrated by studying the effect on the power partition for a fast wave current drive scenario at lower harmonic resonances in a deuterium plasma. It is found that the fraction of the power absorbed on the deuterium and the time to reach the steady state vary strongly depending on the position of the resonances. It is found that the deuterium absorption becomes strongly localized to regions where the resonances are tangential to the magnetic flux surfaces.

  • Mobile Life: A Research Foundation for Mobile Services
  • 2007. - 1
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 6th Global Mobility Roundtable.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The telecom and IT industry is now facing the challenge of a second IT-revolution, where the spread of mobile and ubiquitous services will have an even more profound effect on commercial and social life than the recent Internet revolution. Users will expect services that are unique and fully adapted for the mobile setting, which means that the roles of the operators will change, new business models will be required, and new methods for developing and marketing services have to be found. Most of all, we need technology and services that put people at core. The industry must prepare to design services for a sustainable web of work, leisure and ubiquitous technology we can call the mobile life. In this paper, we describe the main components of a research agenda for mobile services, which is carried out at the Mobile Life Center at Stockholm University. This research program takes a sustainable approach to research and development of mobile and ubiquitous services, by combining a strong theoretical foundation (embodied interaction), a welldefined methodology (user-centered design) and an important domain with large societal importance and commercial potential (mobile life). Eventually the center will create an experimental mobile services ecosystem, which will serve as an open arena where partners from academia and industry can develop our vision an abundant future marketplace for future mobile servíces.
