  • Association of levonorgestrel intrauterine devices with stress reactivity, mental health, quality of life and sexual functioning : A systematic review
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Neuroendocrinology. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 0091-3022 .- 1095-6808. ; 63
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Levonorgestrel-intrauterine-devices (LNG-IUD) are one of the most used contraceptive methods worldwide. While several reviews exist on how LNG-IUDs impact physiology and gynaecological functions, this systematic review focuses on stress, mental health, quality of life, sexual functioning, and effects on brain architecture. While data on stress is scarce, results on mental health are ambiguous. More consistently, LNG-IUD use seems to improve quality of life and sexual functioning. No studies highlighting the consequences of LNG-IUD use on the brain were found. The reviewed studies are characterized by a substantial variation in approaches, participant groups, and study quality. More high-quality research assessing the effects of LNG-IUD on mental health, including response to stressors and brain function and structure, is needed to identify women vulnerable to adverse effects of LNG-IUD, also in comparison to oral contraceptives, and to empower women to make more informed choices concerning hormonal contraception.

  • Insight into the structure-property relationship of UO2 nanoparticles
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Inorganic Chemistry Frontiers. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2052-1545 .- 2052-1553. ; 8:4, s. 1102-1110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Highly crystalline UO2 nanoparticles (NPs) with sizes of 2–3 nm were produced by fast chemical deposition of uranium(IV) under reducing conditions at pH 8–11. The particles were then characterized by microscopy and spectroscopy techniques including high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-energy resolution fluorescence detection (HERFD) X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the U M4 edge and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy at the U L3 edge. The results of this investigation show that despite U(IV) being the dominant oxidation state of the freshly prepared UO2 NPs, they oxidize to U4O9 with time and under the X-ray beam, indicating the high reactivity of U(IV) under these conditions. Moreover, it was found that the oxidation process of NPs is accompanied by their growth in size to 6 nm. We highlight here the major differences and similarities of the UO2 NP properties to PuO2, ThO2 and CeO2 NPs.

  • Tourist perceptions of extreme weather events in Martinique
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Destination Marketing and Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 2212-571X .- 2212-5752. ; 1:1-2, s. 47-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climate change is expected to lead to an increase in extreme weather situations, such as storms, heat waves or intense and prolonged rainfall. This paper explores in situ tourist perceptions of an extreme weather situation in the Caribbean island of Martinique. In a situation of prolonged, heavy rains in what is usually the dry season in April/May, a study was conducted including 240 questionnaires and 28 semi-structured interviews. Results indicate that tourists have a predetermined understanding of local climate conditions, which in the case of repeat visitors is also based on previous in-situ experiences. Frequent and intense rains as experienced by the tourists during the survey period are largely in conflict with weather expectations, but (largely negative) perceptions are negotiated in relation to a range of aspects, such as travel motives, explanatory information about the events, and climate change. Findings are discussed with regard to their implications for demand responses and travel behavior.

  • mTORC1-S6K activation by endotoxin contributes to cytokine up-regulation and early lethality in animals.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: PloS one. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 5:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • mTORC1 (mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1) activation has been demonstrated in response to endotoxin challenge, but the mechanism and significance are unclear. We investigated the effect of mTORC1 suppression in an animal model of endotoxemia and in a cellular model of endotoxin signaling.Mice were treated with the mTORC1 inhibitor rapamycin or vehicle prior to lethal endotoxin challenge. Mortality and cytokine levels were assessed. Cultured macrophage-like cells were challenged with endotoxin with or without inhibitors of various pathways known to be upstream of mTORC1. Activated pathways, including downstream S6K pathway, were assessed by immunoblots. We found that mTORC1-S6K suppression by rapamycin delayed mortality of mice challenged with lethal endotoxin, and was associated with dampened circulating levels of VEGF, IL-1β, IFN-γ and IL-5. Furthermore, in vitro cellular studies demonstrated that LPS (lipopolysaccharide) activation of mTORC1-S6K still occurs in the presence of PI3K-Akt inhibition alone, but can be suppressed by concurrent inhibition of PI3K-Akt and MEK-ERK pathways. We conclude that cellular activation of mTORC1-S6K contributes to cytokine up-regulation and mortality in response to endotoxin, and may occur via multiple pathways.

  • Measuring Confidentiality of Selectively Encrypted Messages Using Guesswork
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Proceeding of the Third Swedish National Computer Networking Workshop (SNCNW 2005). - Halmstad : Högskolan i Halmstad. ; , s. 99-102
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we start to investigate the security implications of selective encryption. We do this by using the measure guesswork, which gives us the expected number of guesses that an attacker performs in an optimal brute force attack to reveal an encrypted message. The characteristics of the proposed measure are only investigated for zero-order languages, and we give some basic initial results. The work is in progress and later papers will examine higher order of languages.

  • Using Guesswork as a Measure for Confidentiality of Selectively Encrypted Messages
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Quality of Protection. - Boston : Springer. ; , s. 173-184
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • n this paper, we start to investigate the security implications of selective encryption. We do this by using the measure guesswork, which gives us the expected number of guesses that an attacker must perform in an optimal brute force attack to reveal an encrypted message. The characteristics of the proposed measure are investigated for zero-order languages. We also introduce the concept of reduction chains to describe how the message (or rather search) space changes for an attacker with different levels of encryption.

  • Information at Your Fingertips : Facilitating Usable Transparency via Privacy Notifications
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The General Data Protection Regulation stipulates legal rights of transparency and intervenability. Transparency provides data subjects with insight into how their personal data have been processed, clarifying what consequences will or may arise due to the processing of their data, whereas intervenability enables them to intervene in the process. Technological artefacts, transparency-enhancing tools (TETs) serve the purpose of conveying respective information precisely and intelligibily. However, despite being a prerequisite for transparency, many TETs available today lack usability in that they do not stringently reflect the needs of their users, which raises the question as to whether individual TETs fulfil their designated purpose. The objective of this dissertation is to systematically apply principles pertaining to human-centred design to ascertain the qualities necessary to design TETs that facilitate transparency and advise means of intervenability with regard to the needs of their target audience. We classify the state of the art of usable TETs published in the literature and discuss the gaps therein. Contextualising our research in the domain of personal health tracking, we investigate to what extent customisation can help accommodate the needs of users of TETs. We introduce privacy notifications as a conceptual means to inform data subjects about facts worthy of their attention, and examine the immanent properties required to accomplish actual usability. We categorise the characteristics of privacy notifications in terms of what insight they convey, and how respective facts need to be presented to facilitate informed decision-making on the recipient's part. Based on findings obtained via quantitative and qualitative user studies, we elicit concomitant factors related to the parameterisation of privacy notifications. We present the prototypical implementation of TETs whose iterative evaluation provides us with a catalogue of design requirements that demonstrably reflect the needs of their users.
