  • Housing plans of the oldest : ageing in semi-rural areas in Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Housing and the Built Environment. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1566-4910 .- 1573-7772. ; 35:1, s. 27-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A number of smaller municipalities have decreasing population rates. Generally, the young move out, increasing the proportion of older people. To increase our understanding of the living conditions of an ageing population in small municipalities, a postal survey was conducted in three small, semi-rural municipalities in southern Sweden. In the survey the respondents answered questions about their living situation and their housing plans. The aim of this study was to investigate the housing situation and housing plans of the very old in semi-rural areas and research questions analysed for this study concerned the current housing situation and plans for future housing. A total of 1386 surveys were sent out in March 2014, to all inhabitants aged 80 years or more, residing in the ordinary housing market in the three municipalities, the response rate was 60%. The results show that most of the respondents were firmly rooted in the area as most of them had lived in the municipality for more than 20 years and 60% had lived in their current dwelling for more than 20 years. Ageing in place was the dominating plan, although one quarter of the respondents answered that they did not know what would happen in the future. Those who planned to move wanted to move to housing that required less maintenance and to a more central location. Residential mobility is at play also in old age as 27% of the respondents had moved at some point during the last 10 years, i.e., after the age of 70.

  • Housing plans of the oldest old – Ageing in semi-rural areas
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Many municipalities in rural areas have decreasing population rates. Generally the young move out, increasing the share of older people and influencing the way life is led in rural areas. In this paper focus is on the housing situation and housing plans of the oldest individuals in three small, semi-rural municipalities in southern Sweden. In order to increase our understanding of the living conditions of an ageing rural population, a postal survey was conducted. In one part of the survey the respondents answered questions about their current housing situation and their housing plans for the future. The research questions analysed for this study regarded stated reasons for housing decisions and plans. 1386 surveys were sent out, i.e., to all inhabitants aged 80 years and older residing in the ordinary housing market, in the three municipalities, 817 surveys were returned providing a response rate at 60%. The aim was to determine the main reasons for remaining put in a current housing situation or reasons for why relocation could be a future option. Results show that place attachment is strong, 90% of the respondents have lived in the municipality for more than 20 years and 60% have lived in the current dwelling for more than 20 years. Ageing in place is the dominating plan although 23% answered that they do not know what will happen in future. Those that plan to move, want to move to housing that needs less maintenance than the current dwelling and to a more central location.

  • Omsorgens skugga - äldres strategier i boendet
  • 2012. - 1
  • Ingår i: Åldrande och omsorgens gestaltningar. - Lund : Studentlitteratur. - 9789144073569 ; , s. 125-146

  • What about community sustainability? - dilemmas of ageing in shrinking semi-rural areas in Sweden
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Scottish Geographical Journal. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1470-2541 .- 1751-665X. ; 134:3-4, s. 103-121
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many municipalities in Sweden have decreasing population rates combined with an increasing proportion of older people. Such a demographic shift will influence the way life is led as the foundation for service provision and social activities becomes undermined. This leads us to question the extent to which shrinking municipalities can be considered socially sustainable. The aim of the paper was to investigate older people's participation in the local community and to study the perceived changes in the local community as reported by older people and how these are experienced. A postal survey was sent out to all inhabitants aged 80 years and older living in their own household in three small, semi-rural municipalities in southern Sweden, in total 1386. The response rate was 60%. Thus, focus was on the experiences of the oldest individuals. The research questions analysed for this study concerned the ageing population's social networks, community involvement, car dependence and service provision. The results are used to discuss the social sustainability of the societies in which these people have lived for a long time.

  • Images of Technology and Sustainable Development in Swedish Children’s Literature
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Australasian Journal of Technology Education. - : University of Waikato. ; 1:1, s. 1-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to investigate images of technology and how technology is linked to sustainable development in Swedish children’s literature. Our perspective is that such images represent values that are conveyed to the young generation. We have chosen to study books by four Swedish authors, Elsa Beskow, Inger Sandberg, Jan Lööf and Sven Nordqvist, all of them still read by many children, parents and teachers, both in and out of school. In the examined books, technology is portrayed in several modes: as a servant to man, as a deterministic force, as a loyal and equal companion to man, and as a natural phenomenon in a nostalgic world. Technologies that have a leading role in the stories examined are placed in different kind of contexts, more or less social, more or less utopian or idyllic. In all four authors’ writings there is an optimistic faith in children’s ability.

  • Technology for a Sustainable Life. Images in Swedish Children’s Literature
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: PATT 27 Technology Education for the Future: A Playon Sustainability. - Hamilton, New Zealand. - 9780992249724 ; , s. 27-24
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the United Nations report Our common future sustainable development is defined as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Technology is seen as a kind of enabling force in that endeavour; new technologies are to be the solution to conflicts between growing economic activities and reductions in the use of natural resources. Sustainable development can, however, also be expressed as a set of traditional values that, in a country like Sweden, have been a part of everyday life for many generations. Education for sustainable development has been a goal in the Swedish national curriculum since 1994, not the least in the subject Technology. The teaching can evidently be inspired by both the international discussion on the future world and by the long tradition of how to live locally. The aim of this paper is to investigate images of technology and how technology is linked to sustainable development in children’s literature. Our perspective is that such images represent values that are conveyed to the young generation. We have chosen to study books by four Swedish authors, Elsa Beskow, Inger Sandberg, Jan Lööf and Sven Nordqvist, all of them still read by many children, parents and teachers alike, both in and out of school. Technology is in the examined books portrayed in several modes: as a servant to man, as a deterministic force, as a loyal and “equal” companion to man and as a natural phenomenon in a nostalgic world. Technologies that have a leading role in the examined stories are placed in different kind of contexts, more or less social, more or less utopian or idyllic. In all four author’s writings there is an optimistic faith in children’s ability to choose the right path. Children are the ones who must take responsibility for the future and overcome the problems the current adult generation have created. From a gender perspective, the message in the majority of the stories is clear: men are the source of technological development.

  • Everyday Mobility and Travel Activities during the first years of Retirement
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Mobility is central to living an independent life, to participating in society, and  to maintaining well-being in later life. The point of departure in this thesis is that retirement implies changes in time-space use and interruption in routines, which influence demands and preconditions for mobility in different ways. The aim of this thesis is to explore mobility strategies and changes in mobility upon retirement and how mobility develops during the first years of retirement. A further aim is to provide knowledge of the extent to which newly retired people maintain a desired mobility based on their needs and preconditions. The thesis is empirically based on travel diaries kept by newly retired people, and qualitative interviews with the same persons, and follow-up interviews three and a half years later. The results show that mobility is a way of forming a structure in the new everyday life as retirees by getting out of the house, either just for a walk or to do errands.  Many  patterns  of everyday life remain the same upon retirement, but the informants also merge new responsibilities and seek new social arenas and activities. As a result, the importance of   the car have not changed, but it is used for other reasons than before. After leaving paid work, new space-time constraints are created which influences demands for mobility. The study further shows that “third places” become important, especially among those who live alone, as they give an opportunity to being part of a social context and a reason for getting out of the house. The follow-up interviews revealed that declining health changes the preconditions for mobility. Daily walks had to be made shorter, and the car had to be used for most errands to where they previously could walk or cycle. However, mobility can also be maintained despite a serious illness and a long period of rehabilitation.
