  • Overview of Touché 2022 : Argument Retrieval
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Experimental IR Meets Multilinguality, Multimodality, and Interaction (CLEF 2022). - Cham : Springer Nature. - 9783031136436 - 9783031136429 ; , s. 311-336
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is a condensed report on the third year of the Touche lab on argument retrieval held at CLEF 2022. With the goal to foster and support the development of technologies for argument mining and argument analysis, we organized three shared tasks in the third edition of Touche: (a) argument retrieval for controversial topics, where participants retrieve a gist of arguments from a collection of online debates, (b) argument retrieval for comparative questions, where participants retrieve argumentative passages from a generic web crawl, and (c) image retrieval for arguments, where participants retrieve images from a focused web crawl that show support or opposition to some stance.

  • The Genome Sequence of Taurine Cattle : A Window to Ruminant Biology and Evolution
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 324:5926, s. 522-528
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To understand the biology and evolution of ruminants, the cattle genome was sequenced to about sevenfold coverage. The cattle genome contains a minimum of 22,000 genes, with a core set of 14,345 orthologs shared among seven mammalian species of which 1217 are absent or undetected in noneutherian (marsupial or monotreme) genomes. Cattle-specific evolutionary breakpoint regions in chromosomes have a higher density of segmental duplications, enrichment of repetitive elements, and species-specific variations in genes associated with lactation and immune responsiveness. Genes involved in metabolism are generally highly conserved, although five metabolic genes are deleted or extensively diverged from their human orthologs. The cattle genome sequence thus provides a resource for understanding mammalian evolution and accelerating livestock genetic improvement for milk and meat production.

  • Long-term patient survival in ANCA-associated vasculitis
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases. - : BMJ. - 1468-2060 .- 0003-4967. ; 70:3, s. 488-494
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Wegener's granulomatosis and microscopic polyangiitis are antineutrophil cytoplasm antibodies (ANCA)-associated vasculitides with significant morbidity and mortality. The long-term survival of patients with ANCA associated vasculitis treated with current regimens is uncertain. Objective To describe the long-term patient survival and possible prognostic factors at presentation in an international, multicentre, prospectively recruited representative patient cohort who were treated according to strictly defined protocols at presentation and included the full spectrum of ANCA-associated vasculitis disease. Methods Outcome data were collected for 535 patients who had been recruited at the time of diagnosis to four randomised controlled trials between 1995 and 2002. Trial eligibility was defined by disease severity and extent, covered the spectrum of severity of ANCA-associated vasculitis and used consistent diagnostic criteria. Demographic, clinical and laboratory parameters at trial entry were tested as potential prognostic factors in multivariable models. Results The median duration of follow-up was 5.2 years and 133 (25%) deaths were recorded. Compared with an age-and sex-matched general population there was a mortality ratio of 2.6 (95% CI 2.2 to 3.1). Main causes of death within the first year were infection (48%) and active vasculitis (19%). After the first year the major causes of death were cardiovascular disease (26%), malignancy (22%) and infection (20%). Multivariable analysis showed an estimated glomerular filtration rate <15 ml/min, advancing age, higher Birmingham Vasculitis Activity Score, lower haemoglobin and higher white cell count were significant negative prognostic factors for patient survival. Conclusion Patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis treated with conventional regimens are at increased risk of death compared with an age-and sex-matched population.

  • Recent advances in functional research in Giardia intestinalis
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Giardia And Giardiasis, Pt B. - : Elsevier. - 9780128221976 - 9780128204757 ; , s. 97-137
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This review considers current advances in tools to investigate the functional biology of Giardia, it's coding and non-coding genes, features and cellular and molecular biology. We consider major gaps in current knowledge of the parasite and discuss the present state-of-the-art in its in vivo and in vitro cultivation. Advances in in silico tools, including for the modelling non-coding RNAs and genomic elements, as well as detailed exploration of coding genes through inferred homology to model organisms, have provided significant, primary level insight. Improved methods to model the three-dimensional structure of proteins offer new insights into their function, and binding interactions with ligands, other proteins or precursor drugs, and offer substantial opportunities to prioritise proteins for further study and experimentation. These approaches can be supplemented by the growing and highly accessible arsenal of systems-based methods now being applied to Giardia, led by genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic methods, but rapidly incorporating advanced tools for detection of real-time transcription, evaluation of chromatin states and direct measurement of macromolecular complexes. Methods to directly interrogate and perturb gene function have made major leaps in recent years, with CRISPr-interference now available. These approaches, coupled with protein over-expression, fluorescent labelling and in vitro and in vivo imaging, are set to revolutionize the field and herald an exciting time during which the field may finally realise Giardia's long proposed potential as a model parasite and eukaryote.

  • Seasonal changes in muscle structure and flesh quality of 0+ and 1+ Atlantic salmon (Salmo salara L.):impact of feeding regime and possible roles of ghrelin
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Aquaculture Nutrition. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1353-5773 .- 1365-2095. ; 19:1, s. 15-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Growth performance, muscle cellularity, flesh quality, and plasma ghrelin were investigated in 0+ and 1+ farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) from 40 g to 4.3 kg. Reduced meal frequency was introduced in both smolt groups from ~1.5 kg; one meal per second day (<5 °C) to one daily meal (>5 °C), while control groups were fed one to three daily meals. Results show that 0+ salmon had higher final fibre number and density, pigment content, red colour intensity, firmer flesh, and lower fillet fat content than 1+ salmon at 4.3 kg, affected by season and smolt type. Muscle fibre recruitment was an important determinant of fillet firmness and colour, possibly influenced by the prenatal temperature regime. Fish fed reduced meal frequency showed temporal reduced feeding ration, but growth performance was not compromised in any smolt groups at harvest. However, fillet fat, gaping, and colour decreased by less frequent feeding, with permanent effects in 1+ salmon for gaping and fat. Reduced meal frequency is therefore considered to be a promising tool for managing important flesh quality attributes in salmon without compromising growth performance. It is also suggested that ghrelin stimulates short-term appetite, and perhaps also in the longer term.

  • The Comet Interceptor Mission
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Space Science Reviews. - : Springer Nature. - 0038-6308 .- 1572-9672. ; 220:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Here we describe the novel, multi-point Comet Interceptor mission. It is dedicated to the exploration of a little-processed long-period comet, possibly entering the inner Solar System for the first time, or to encounter an interstellar object originating at another star. The objectives of the mission are to address the following questions: What are the surface composition, shape, morphology, and structure of the target object? What is the composition of the gas and dust in the coma, its connection to the nucleus, and the nature of its interaction with the solar wind? The mission was proposed to the European Space Agency in 2018, and formally adopted by the agency in June 2022, for launch in 2029 together with the Ariel mission. Comet Interceptor will take advantage of the opportunity presented by ESA’s F-Class call for fast, flexible, low-cost missions to which it was proposed. The call required a launch to a halo orbit around the Sun-Earth L2 point. The mission can take advantage of this placement to wait for the discovery of a suitable comet reachable with its minimum Δ V capability of 600 ms − 1 . Comet Interceptor will be unique in encountering and studying, at a nominal closest approach distance of 1000 km, a comet that represents a near-pristine sample of material from the formation of the Solar System. It will also add a capability that no previous cometary mission has had, which is to deploy two sub-probes – B1, provided by the Japanese space agency, JAXA, and B2 – that will follow different trajectories through the coma. While the main probe passes at a nominal 1000 km distance, probes B1 and B2 will follow different chords through the coma at distances of 850 km and 400 km, respectively. The result will be unique, simultaneous, spatially resolved information of the 3-dimensional properties of the target comet and its interaction with the space environment. We present the mission’s science background leading to these objectives, as well as an overview of the scientific instruments, mission design, and schedule.
