  • Retention and maternal transfer of environmentally relevant polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans, and polychlorinated biphenyls in zebrafish (Danio rerio) after dietary exposure
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0730-7268 .- 1552-8618. ; 31:4, s. 804-812
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), mono- and non-ortho polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PBDDs) are found in fish from coastal areas in the Baltic Sea, which may cause ecotoxicological effects. To increase our understanding of the persistency of the emerging pollutants polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs), fish feed was spiked with 21 PBDD/Fs, 17 PCDD/Fs, and 30 PCBs and fed to zebrafish. Concentrations in fish and eggs were examined during a six- or twelve-week uptake period, and a six-week elimination period. Steady-state was reached for 2, 3, 7, and/or 8-substituted tri- and tetra-BDD/Fs, with 2,3,7,8-tetra-BDD (2,3,7,8-TeBDD) being the most strongly retained. Steady-state was not reached for tetra- to hexa-CDDs. Non-2,3,7,8-congeners showed little of or no retention. Most PCBs had high retention and did not reach steady-state. Half-lives decreased in the order: PCBs > PCDD/Fs > PBDD/Fs. Concentrations of 2,3,7,8-penta- to octa-CDD/Fs decreased with their degree of chlorination suggesting that the rate-limiting factor for uptake is low bioavailability. Maternal transfer was observed for all retained compounds, with most transfer factors < 1, indicating that transfer rates are affected by the poor water solubility of the compounds. The limited retention of the major PBDD congeners found in Baltic Sea fish suggests that they are exposed to high or very high concentrations via either food or water.

  • Feature Extraction for Computer-Aided Analysis of Mammograms
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: State of the Art in Digital Mammographic Image Analysis. - Singapore : World Scientific Publishing Co. Ltd. - 9810215096 - 9789810215095
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A framework for computer-aided analysis of mammograms is described. General computer vision algorithms are combined with application specific procedures in a hierarchical fashion. The system is under development and is currently limited to detection of a few types of suspicious areas. The image features are extracted by using feature extraction methods where wavelet techniques are utilized. A low-pass pyramid representation of the image is convolved with a number of quadrature filters. The filter outputs are combined according to simple local Fourier domain models into parameters describing the local neighborhood with respect to the model. This produces estimates for each pixel describing local size, orientation, Fourier phase, and shape with confidence measures associated to each parameter. Tentative object descriptions are then extracted from the pixel-based features by application-specific procedures with knowledge of relevant structures in mammograms. The orientation, relative brightness and shape of the object are obtained by selection of the pixel feature estimates which best describe the object. The list of object descriptions is examined by procedures, where each procedure corresponds to a specific type of suspicious area, e.g. clusters of microcalcifications.

  • A 3D voxel-based mesostructure generator for finite element modelling of tow-based discontinuous composites
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Composites Part B: Engineering. - 1359-8368. ; 278
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tow-based discontinuous composites manufactured with ultra-thin tapes display high stiffness, strength, and in-plane isotropy, thus competing with composite laminates. Their complex 3D microstructure affects the mechanical response, in turn demanding 3D generators that capture the tape waviness, resin pockets, and thickness and fibre content variations. The present work proposes an automated numerical framework combining a 3D voxel-based mesostructure generator with finite element models. A modified 3D random sequential absorption technique is developed with bin-guided allocation, draping, and thickness control. A statistical study is used to size the statistical volume elements and predict the elastic properties of thick, thin, and ultra-thin tow-based discontinuous composites. The results are compared with the experimental values from the literature. Despite uncertainties in physical tape properties, the resulting stiffnesses are predicted with good accuracy.

  • Adaptive Multidimensional Filtering
  • 1991
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis contains a presentation and an analysis of adaptive filtering strategies for multidimensional data. The size, shape and orientation of the flter are signal controlled and thus adapted locally to each neighbourhood according to a predefined model. The filter is constructed as a linear weighting of fixed oriented bandpass filters having the same shape but different orientations. The adaptive filtering methods have been tested on both real data and synthesized test data in 2D, e.g. still images, 3D, e.g. image sequences or volumes, with good results. In 4D, e.g. volume sequences, the algorithm is given in its mathematical form. The weighting coefficients are given by the inner products of a tensor representing the local structure of the data and the tensors representing the orientation of the filters. The procedure and lter design in estimating the representation tensor are described. In 2D, the tensor contains information about the local energy, the optimal orientation and a certainty of the orientation. In 3D, the information in the tensor is the energy, the normal to the best ftting local plane and the tangent to the best fitting line, and certainties of these orientations. In the case of time sequences, a quantitative comparison of the proposed method and other (optical flow) algorithms is presented. The estimation of control information is made in different scales. There are two main reasons for this. A single filter has a particular limited pass band which may or may not be tuned to the different sized objects to describe. Second, size or scale is a descriptive feature in its own right. All of this requires the integration of measurements from different scales. The increasing interest in wavelet theory supports the idea that a multiresolution approach is necessary. Hence the resulting adaptive filter will adapt also in size and to different orientations in different scales.
